Learning more about Yahoo! Messenger
July 11, 2008 on 12:40 pm | In 9.0 version, Features |
Where do you turn when you’re not sure how to do something in Yahoo! Messenger? Maybe a friend told you about making phone calls in Messenger, or they wowed you with their spiffy Avatar but you’re not sure how they did it. Most times, you’d probably ask your friends for help, but there is another resource for learning about Yahoo! Messenger called Tutorials.
Tutorials include screenshots and step-by-step instructions on how to use a variety of Yahoo! Messenger features. There are many articles available for both Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 and 9.0. Among the tutorials, you’ll find articles on basic (Introducing Yahoo! Messenger’s Call Features) as well as more advanced features.
Here’s a example of some of the topics you’ll find among the Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 tutorials:
Sharing Messenger Lists with a friend
Placing and receiving calls
Sharing photos
Working with Plug-ins
To access the Tutorials website, just go to the Help menu in Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 or 9.0. Or use the Tutorials link on the right side of our blog (under “Links”).

But, Sarah, this is all very well and good, and thank you again for the great work and updates. However when is the Member Directory Search, which is a Yahoo feature that can go hand-in-hand with such an improved Messenger platform — and which it’s been widely reported by Yahoo users has been down for about a good 2 months now, without any Yahoo public acknowledgement or resolution — going to be up and running again…or, if at all? I guess it’s kind of amazing me that this blatant and Messenger use-related function problem hasn’t been adequately addressed to satisfaction yet. Thanks in advance.
I.

Why does messenger edit my registry EVERYTIME I open it to run automatically on PC startup? Shouldn’t this be MY decision on MY computer I paid for? Shouldn’t there be an option to have it not do this? adobe and apple are NOT role models.

It doesn’t take much to become a Yahoo! Messenger expert. Once you play with it, and research some, you learn a lot which benefits others.

Does the OSX client support Applescript? Can’t find a definitive answer anywhere. My short experiments with trying to set variables, such as “status message”, points to no.

Nancy Schwope,
Go to my blog (website link) and I have a recent blog about how I always do a clean uninstall, registry cleanup and then reinstall YM only from a full version download… not the YM-installer version.

Yahoo Messenger 9.0 doesn’t have a send button while instant messaging. You might find that button useless, since a person on chat is usually typing a message and hiting the return/Enter key to send it. But, if a person is using a tablet pc on tablet mode with Handwriting recognition function, one doesn’t have access to any keys on the keyboard and there is no other way to send the message, since there is no send/submit button too.

Yahoo is a FREE Instant messenger just like AIM & Windows Live Messenger but I would not use the 9.0 Beta version until they come out with the final version & hopefully all errors will be fixed (even after final version released might wanna wait little while )

Is there a reason why the weather and news YIM plugins are showing a 404 as of today?

Has anyone heard when the 9.x beta will go into final release? I’d love to get a version that doesn’t crash my machine. Besides, only MS has betas that last forever. LOL!!

I agree with frndsfrvr. I wouldn’t use the beta version. Download the 8.1 version if you really must have Yahoo messenger. It’s not great, but it doesn’t have quite as many problems as the beta version.

I like all the new features that are coming into Yahoo! Messenger. But it seems as if you’re only concentrating on the IM Environment as opposed to the Chat Environment.
The problem with Bots hasn’t been solved. They’re again in rooms as they were before. The only thing captcha did in the long run was a create yet another tiny annoyance for Yahoo! Messenger Users.

Hi, i would like to cancel my yahoo messenger. i should i say for some reason it keeps popping up when everyone else is online. they are able to read my email. how can i stop this for happening?
Comment by evelyn — August 4, 2008 #
Hi evelyn,
You need to change your Messenger settings so that it requires a password each time someone wants to sign in. Since it sounds like you’re sharing a computer with other people, you need to make sure you sign out every time you’re finished using Messenger. Please follow the instructions on this page to ensure that your log in information is not stored at sign-on:

Hope that helps,
Sarah Bacon

If I use Yahoo Messenger to SMS to a mobile device. How would Verizon Wireless bill the recipient, if they have unlimited text but no data plan? Would the text be part of the text package or the data plan? How much would a 130 stroke text cost? OR does Verizon treat the message as email or text?
