Mac Users: Display Image Update
June 19, 2008 on 4:34 pm | In Mac version, News | 52 Comments
Recently several Mac users have been experiencing issues with setting and viewing the display image. Thanks for the heads up! We’re aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. Until then, sit tight—we know it’s frustrating but appreciate your feedback on this issue.
Thanks!
Melissa Daniels
Yahoo! Messenger Community Manager

Even though i set up my display image how many times, i still could not see it.
Comment by Sallie — June 19, 2008 #
Sit tight folks I am sure a fix will be included in beta 3.0.9.76.35 that will be out sometime next week.
Seriously, what are you guys waiting to release a non-Beta version of messenger for the Mac?
Comment by Alex Rodriguez — June 19, 2008 #
Well, it’s a relief that Yahoo finally acknowledges that there is a probblm and promises a fix. We, as Mac users, feel so devalued when we are given software that not only has less features than the Window Versions, but is substantially flawed. What is more infuriating is that almost on a weekly basis, new enhancements, features, and improvements are made on the Window version, while the Mac Version stagnates. I’m not sure why MSN messenger seems to be able to create a chat experience that benefits both Windows and Mac users; but Yahoo can not.
Comment by artbrutnewyork — June 19, 2008 #
Amen artbrutnewyork! Yahoo’s support for the Mac has always been sub par. Other companies (and competitors) like Google – and even Microsoft – have embraced the Mac platform. Yahoo still lags.
Comment by Derick — June 19, 2008 #
hmmm…as for MSN and Google embracing the Mac? Both of those IM apps for Mac do lack video chat capability, so it’s really a no-win situation.
Comment by Jordan — June 19, 2008 #
It’s kind of odd that Mac users are always whining about how they feel jilted by programs that lack options that are available for Mac O.S.’s, yet are always bragging how great Mac is and always superior than any Microsoft product. If you love Mac, then stop whining that every programmer does not embrace this operating system. If you want the the maximum options available for the most popular programs out there, get MS Windows. MS Windows users have to deal with a crummy operating system and Mac users have to deal with fewer options/programs available to them. LIFE ISN’T FAIR, move on, get MS Windows or stick with your Mac and GET OVER IT. Linux is far superior than Mac and you don’t hear Linux users constantly whining day and night over program availability. If this bothers you so much go march on the streets, write your congressional leaders and get Federal and State legislation passed to mandate that all programmers must write their programs with all options available to all Operating Systems that exist before they are released to the public or face severe fines and/or prison time.

i think i should tell u guys something i don’t like about the 9.0 display image in WINDOWS….
in previous versions there was an option of showing ur pic only 2 selected users… that has been removed, please put it back…
I mean “Use this selection for everyone” is now missing… I want it back…
Comment by mad — June 20, 2008 #
who cares about the display image? what about webcam, addressbook, file tranfer, buddylist falling out of sync with server, all these features were broken recently by recent server changes. Client essentially doesn’t work at all except for PMing. Almost all of the features are broken not just buddy images, personally i think this is the least significant of the issues.
Comment by MysticalOS — June 20, 2008 #
Does everything have to resort to an OS war? Goodness. This is the Mac section of the blog. If you don’t want to hear suggestions of improvement from the Mac users, don’t bother reading the comments – duh.
Anyway, thanks for the update Yahoo. I look forward to seeing what else you guys have in store for Mac’s version of Messenger.
Thanks!
Comment by Shannon — June 20, 2008 #
Well congrats on another well done job. Mac messenger is no longer functional at all, it’s no longer able to signin any other method but HTTP proxy. The regular connection method has now stopped functioning too, like everything else. Under HTTP proxy, buddylist doesn’t update at all (not that it was very accurate to begin with at this point). Mac messenger has sure gone down the scrap heap now.
Comment by MysticalOS — June 21, 2008 #
To Jeff, we COULD install Windows on our Macs but why ruin a perfectly good machine? I look forward to the update. Photoshare would be nice while you guys are at it. hint

Regarding Jordan’s comment (June 19)–I have been wondering about MSN Messenger & the lack of video chat capability for Mac users. I have some contacts who use hotmail & therefore I cannot video chat with them on YM but was sure I’d be able to on MSN. Have spent hours trying to figure out how to use my webcam with MSN, assuming there MUST be a way. So it’s not just me? It really is impossible?
Comment by Rick — June 21, 2008 #
I’m not a mac user. I use windows and I still have this problem as well and have for a while.

I’m both a Mac and PC user, when it comes to the chatting part, i have not problem, it excellent. When it comes to the display image, this boggles me? The last picture i used for my display image is still showing up on the Windows version of YM while the Mac’s none?
But thanks for trying to fix it hope you guys find the problem.
Hey any possible way that you people in Yahoo can integrate photobooth’s wacky filters to your webcam application?
Comment by Mark — June 22, 2008 #
My ym for mac is not signing in for me. When i click sign in it shows the loading circle, and it keeps showing it. I can see my contacts signing in and out but i can’t talk to them since it’s stuck on the loading cricle.
While this is happening it says that I am online (when i check my friend’s ym list)…
Comment by Alyson — June 23, 2008 #
looks like beta 3.0 has a complete failure on signing in atm

when are you really going to fix all the problems haha
Comment by rick — June 23, 2008 #

Comment by camsa4888 — June 23, 2008 #
Thanks so much for this fix.
I’m so annoyed at not having any display pics. Do you think that you could make nice skins for yahoo messenger mac? I would like a new look for it.
Comment by macguy123 — June 23, 2008 #
Speaking of mac problems, I haven’t been able to sign in for the last few days on messenger, it says I have wrong credentials or some such nonsense.
Comment by CyberSkull — June 24, 2008 #
It seems that it is not only a mac version problem!
You should correct the news title.
yahoo messenger for vista is also having trouble with image displaying (not for avatar) since about 2 weeks.
Comment by poupart — June 24, 2008 #
Display images is a minor issue compared to quite fundamental stuff that’s been broken for months now, like stealth settings.
Is there any update on when they’ll actually be fixed?
Comment by The Phazer — June 24, 2008 #
I’m just looking forward to being able to have all of the same treats as Windows users!
But fixing the display image is a FANTASTIC start!!!
Comment by MacGirl74 — June 24, 2008 #
hola – I’m thinking you must be getting heaps of mail – but thought I’d add my tiny voice to the chorus
mac beta
- first the stealth settings stopped working (had to go available and then put everyone on permanantly offline
- then the avatars stopped working – no matter what i set it to, it remained a blank grey default icon
- now the webcam won’t work – friends say all they see is “not connected”
have tried reinstalling, deleting the cache folder and the .plist preferences to no avail.
any tips or hopeful reports?
thanks!

I am having problem with the yahoo messenger not automatically scrolling down when I get a message. In other words, when the window is full, I need to manually scroll down in order to see the messages. How do I fix this?
Comment by Shawn — June 25, 2008 #
Thanks for fixing the display image issue for the Mac Messenger.
Comment by Kane — June 25, 2008 #
It seems to be fixed, I can see my photo, but my friend cannot. At least I can look at myself! Thanks!

I converted to MAC last year when I got an Iphone I was so impressed with the way it worked. I got a MacBook Pro for work. Now I see I’m forced to accept substandard software from outside sources. I unfortuantely have to use my MAC with VMFusionWare for a XP operating system for worked related software, at least I have the option of downloading IM for Windows until this pathetic excuse for a company fixes and upgrades it IM software. No wonder they can’t sell their company and command a good stock price.
Comment by RusRiverMan — June 26, 2008 #
Hurray for the display image fix! Small thing but means a lot. We never know what we’ve got till it’s gone, eh?
I’m really hoping to see photosharing, of all the standard features, in a new official Mac version soon. And, a stable one of course.
Thanks Mac Team!
Comment by Nan — June 26, 2008 #
shawn – upgrade your version of yahoo messenger –
that problem was fixed in the current version.
and i’d like to add my thanks for getting our images back.
yay!!!
Comment by amanda — June 26, 2008 #
Thanks for fixing the display image problem. Any news on fixing stealth settings? These were broken before the display images. It’s not possible to appear as online to selected contacts any more on the Mac version, I just get a notification that trying to set the status failed.
Comment by John — June 27, 2008 #
When will the next release be ready? I downloaded YM version 3 beta 2, and now it crashes even before the contacts load, is there a fix to this? I deleted the cache and preferences. Stealth settings really needs to be fixed!
Comment by EmCue — June 27, 2008 #
I have a G5 iMac and I downloaded YIM 3.0 Beta for Macs on it. . .initially, I had no problems. . .now, I can’t make myself visible to some users without being visible to all users. . .to add insult to injury, I can’t get incoming file transfers, and my avatar pic keeps dropping. . .I have this problem on my laptop as well. . .
I was recently told that I am a Yahoo Power User. . .lotta good that did me!!! It only helps if you’re a PC user. . .when I tried to get help in the live chat, I was told that the only way I’d get help was through email for Mac users because the chat only supports WIndows and PC versions of YIM if you have a problem. . .
When will Yahoo create a simple AND accessible chat help for Mac Yahoo Power Users??? And how long will the wait be to correct our other issues???
–Linda

I just want to say it is about time us Macintosh users get upgraded in the survey departments of your sites. I am a surveyor, I do many surveys and because I am a m=Macintosh user I am restricted from doing many surveys I am sick and tired of being treated like this as we spend lots of money for our wonderful Macintosh Computers and we too should be able to use our computers the same as Windows does and let us too take surveys without hassles, I think the Macintosh is such a better computer than a Windows and I have had many Windows XP ext. That have broken down and lost everything so many times I went to a Macintosh and I would like to say we are special too. So stop fooling around you that use windows as your site for doing surveys and include us Macintosh users so we too can make money on our computers just like Windows Versions ! It is about time someone said something to you that dont use Macintosh and upgrade your sites to Macintosh users. Our computers are so Much better than a PCUnit that crashes with every step We dont do that. I just had to put my input in.

I’m a mac yahoo messenger user…….. display images are not appearing on windows yahoo messenger..it’s either grey or black…
what’s up?
Comment by Erika — October 21, 2008 #
i’ve recently converted to mac pro after years of using windows.. while i’m impressed with the OS and safari I’m dissapointed with YM (beta 3.0). For example: It hangs 50% of the time i open it, stealth settings are not individualized, its still unclear to me how to change fonts, colors, etc when chatting… I really think Apple needs to be more demanding on the YM beta releases…

Nice — I see the first posting about the image problem on June of this year, and here it is close to Thanksgiving with no fix. Upgraded from the old 2.3.5 Messenger last night.
While Messenger for Mac has been subpar for years, it’s obvious that development for the platform has been cut back, since just getting your own icon to show in home screen just isn’t that difficult.
It’s really not easy being this mediocre. I have friends and engineers a Google that would never accept this level of parity on their platform — it’s obvious that in designing your product that shortcuts were taken that used Windows-specific implementations and other platforms had to be reverse-engineered to work.
I’m glad your architect(s) don’t work with me, because they wouldn’t do it for long. Circulate your resumes. AIM, MSIM and Jabber have officially kicked your butts.

Well Happy New Year! Almost February and no Yahoo Messenger update. I have found I can set my display image by opening Yahoo Messenger in VMWare Fusion. I cannot change or do anything with it on the Mac side. That’s the work around I’ve been using the past year….
