Voice back in chat rooms for Vista users

June 10, 2008 on 9:40 am | In 9.0 version, Voice | 64 Comments

Last week we released an update of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta. That new release includes a fix for Windows Vista users who use 9.0, enabling voice features in chat rooms and in private conferences. Previously, voice did not work for Vista users but in this latest release we added a codec to enable it.

If you are on Windows Vista and want to restore voice features to chat rooms and conferences, be sure you download and install the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta (9.0.0.1389).

Please note that this fix is not related to our Yahoo! Messenger for Vista version which does not yet have chat rooms or conferencing features. If you are on Windows Vista and want to visit chat rooms, you should use Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta.

  6. Why not change the compression format Yahoo uses for voice chat? The Truespeech codec isn’t even actively developed anymore, AND the sound quality is horrible compared to other compression formats.

  8. After I downloaded this latest beta, all my archives got deleted!!! How do I restore my old archives??

    Comment by CM — June 15, 2008 #

  9. CM,

You should be able to access your archives by locating the original file/folder where your encrypted archives were stored.

Typically, these logs are saved on your C drive, under the Program Files folder, then the Yahoo! Or Yahoo! Messenger folder. From here, locate the profiles folder, followed by your screen name folder, and then the archive folder. Here, you should see folders with your friend’s screen names, and inside, your archives/conversations. To view these in the new Messenger, you’ll just need to drag and drop this folder into your current Messenger folder.

Let me know if you still have issues.

  10. Hi Eric,

You should be able to disable this feature by going up to the Messenger menu, then selecting Preferences, and then Alerts. From here, you can edit which notifications display (including when you have a new Yahoo! Mail message).

    Hope this helps!

    Comment by yahoo user — July 2, 2008 #

  20. I just downloaded YM 9.0 hoping it’s codecs would solve the lack of voice problems I was getting in chat, but it didn’t. Now I get this message- “This computer does not appear to have audio input capability, or it is not configured correctly.” I’m using Vista home edition, no proxies, just Windows firewall and a router. None of my XP computers have this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

  22. dh –

You need to use Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta to access the chat rooms if you’re on Vista. Be sure to download the latest one here: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/win

If you’re on Vista and using 8.0, you will not have any voice in chat rooms.

I am a yahoo user from waaaaaay back and have never had any issues with Yahoo until now. It’s quite frustrating to continue to have these issues.
