Maintenance Update Complete!
June 9, 2008 on 3:57 pm | In News | 38 Comments
We’re happy to announce our maintenance update is complete! During this time, some of you may have experienced trouble logging into your Y! Messenger account or noticed a little bit of lag time when messaging– hopefully it wasn’t too bad.
For those of you curious about what was done during this maintenance, we’ve moved our older Messenger version users out of our old data center (called DCN) and into our new data center (called MUD).
Version 8.1 and 9.0 users were moved to new data centers seamlessly a few weeks back. By doing this, we’re preventing future maintenance outages and have already implemented these new systems into the 8.1 and 9.0 versions of Yahoo! Messenger. These changes make it much easier for us to move users around data centers. If you’re still using a Yahoo! Messenger version 8.0 or earlier, you may want to update to one of the latest versions– you’ll get a higher level of service from Yahoo! Messenger.

Is this the move that broke all features of mac client? webcam, file transfer, none of it works, features are totally dead in latest client for me for last couple weeks at least. I can’t view a cam i can’t transmit a cam i can’t send files or even receive them. Nothing happens, request times out with no response from server, it’s as if it’s looking for a server that isn’t there..

Ever since the last upgrade, my Yahoo Messenger (MAC 3.0) no longer accepts jpg files as my display. I can only use avatar. Can someone please fix this? Before the upgrade, my messenger was fine.
Comment by Blakflower — June 9, 2008 #
Do you at Yahoo! knot that the webcam features no longer work with the new messenger?
Comment by Tommy — June 9, 2008 #
Yeah the mac client is totally screwed. I hate not being able to use cam. I use it to talk to friends and family and stuff…it needs to be addressed

You say that you have done a mantenance update but it seems to me that you have messed everything up real bad i can not even check me mail it wont launch or even sgin into a chat room to chat with my friends. I thought it might have been a problem with my PC but I have done several virus scans on it and it is still messenger that has the problem. I tried to uninstall messenger and there was a big problem it would not uninstall it took several times. I kept getting an error message that messenger had a fatal error. I can only wonder if you have done more harm than good. A very DISAPOINTED Windows XP user

[...] the maintenance update for the messenger servers is now complete. From what I gathered from the original post is that they were just switching servers out of an old data center and into the new data center. [...]

I tried out the sign into mobile device option and send my mobile the 4 digit registration key. Without realizing it once you do this you can never sign into IM the normal way. I deleted the mobile device and change the settings on my desktop IM but my mobile phone refused to recognize me with I try to sign into IM the normal way. I uninstalled and reinstalled IM on my mobile but to no avail. This really sucks you guys made this feature availble but it cannot be reversed on the mobile phone even though the device is deleted through the IM Mobile Device settings. How is one supposed to sign into IM the normal way again? I set up all 5 of my mobile devices like this and then realized IM is no longer usable on the mobile phone once you set up the phone through the desktop IM and register the device with the 4 digit code. How is one supposed to get the old IM back and sign in the normal way? So I’ve ditched IM until this gets fixed.

Hello,
Great work!!
However, I have one little problem that I haven’t been able to solve for the last many months.
With Yahoo Messenger 8.1 on Windows XP (fully updated), ringtones for incoming calls are not audible for restricted users, they only see the little popup near the status bar when they receive a call.
The incoming ringtone is audible when the messenger is being used by a user with administrator rights on XP.
I have tried updating the messenger during the course of the last year, also reinstalled it a few times, but the problem is consistent and persists. What am I missing here?
thanks for all your help,
->HS

WebCam don`t work for me
Comment by Nora Pentru Mama — June 11, 2008 #
Good work. The AC4 and SP1 data centers I presume? Why is it that cs125, cs126 and cs127 on the MUD servers exist, but they’re not usable?
Also, hope you know there are a couple server issues on all the servers.
1. All servers suffer from a bug where you don’t receive the chat leave packet when the 3 hour limit is up.
2. Some of the voice servers are messed up and not responding. Two of them don’t work, and two more cause a temp voice ban when using them.
Ah yes, so you guys know, Messenger v9.0.0.1389 beta suffers from an extreme bug where no webcam connection (TCP connection) is made to view cams when clicking on a user in the chat room and attempting to view their cam. Cam uploading/broadcasting works fine however.

can`t get into chat rooms-got booted and now i can`t get back into the rooms

venom. thats eaxtly what happens in mac client. in or out of chat. beta 3 no longer even attempts to make a tcp connection to cam server. in sniffing packets i never once saw a single packet go over 5100-5101. an initial request was sent on 5050 but server ignores the request with no responce and cam eventually fails with no responce. I have reproduced this issue on two diff mac and latest 9.0 beta build and confirmed it effects in or out of chat. i honestly suspect its a server problem. probably related to recent move. could ne that although the domain names for new servers same. some of the domain/dns forwarding can be broken. server not getting request likely do to a misconfiguration in new hosting or old hosting still holding the domains. I’d def have techs research into those theries.
Comment by MysticalOS — June 11, 2008 #
It’s most likely because of a change of packet structure for the Mac version. For the latest Messenger 9 beta, it’s because the code that’s supposed to be there, isn’t.

hello guys,I know you work hard,i have a question
1.why some site can ditect who is invesible or not?
2.this is a bug in your codes or security hole in your system?
im in iran right now and i know this sites developed bye iranian.
what`s going on?realy you cant stop them?or this is yahoo policy
I contact with security team but they dont any respond to me!

Comment by Nariman — June 12, 2008 #
they changed packet structure when they moved it? I didn’t look too deep into it, plus it’s hard to sniff packets when none are being sent back and forth. Hopefully someone gets some sense to fix it.

Dear Melissa Daniels,
I have to throw in my complaints about loosing the ability to post a jpg to the Display window and all of the other ills mentioned above about the Mac version. What formerly worked, doesn’t. I suggest you test your releases more thoroughly before springing them on us. Mac version 98855 is a stinker.
Signed,
A very unhappy Mac user

what maintanance did you do? i guess not tried to get the bots out of the room, here is a screenshot of today from polititcslobby 6, there are FIVE different pornbots in the room, see screenshot http://img29.picoodle.com/img/img29/4/6/12/f_ScreenShot0m_4981c1e.jpg
if this continious it will be not long before not one real human can get in the rooms anymore.
Comment by miranda — June 12, 2008 #
I did more testing, here is what is broken now in mac version.
Webcams, sending or recieving are shot
Stealth settings no longer work, just report an unknown error.
Avatar display pics don’t work right.
Cannot upload changes to addressbook anymore, they fail to send to server and as a result next launch app will have reverted any AB changes.
Buddylist updating is very shotty, it rarely updates without logout and login to refresh it since the packets are probably changed for that too.
Calling and file tranfer, hard to tell, those features were pretty shotty at best anyways, so no telling if they are worse or not.
Probably other things i haven’t fully tested yet. If a new mac version isn’t released soon to address these clear and obvious issues, there will be a very large and angry mac community.

Most Mac Users using Yahoo Messenger 3.0 have experienced an inability to display images in the chat window so their friends/family can see them. . This is a known issue with Yahoo Messenger, yet Yahoo seems to be moving at a glacial pace to address this issue.
I have seen other posts of frustrated Mac Users who are getting no responses to their emails to Yahoo about this problem. I have sent 3 emails in the past month and get a computer-generated post saying tha support isn’t available for the Beta Version. Terrific.
It’s outrageous as they seem to spend every waking moment on improving the capabilities of the Windows Version. It seems that almost on a weekly basis, new features and improvements are added to the Windows Version of Yahoo, while the Mac Version has stagnated. Sure Mac users were tossed a bone and given the 3.0 beta version, but it is terribly flawed. We as Mac users should demand answers as to when a true upgrade to Yahoo Messenger for Mac will be available that fixes the image display problem (not to mention the frequent crashes).
Hasn’t ‘ Yahoo realized that the Mac is now a major player with a viable company and assured future. and it isnt’ like it was 15 years when it’s survival was in doubt. Such blatant disrespect to Mac users is disgraceful.
When will Yahoo make Yahoo Messenger a useful chat program for millions of Mac users.

Mac client: HORRIBLE. Like a toy version.
PC client (8.1.0.421, anyway): “Ignore” doesn’t ignore. The client crashes on my Vista box when someone shuts their cam off.
PLEASE GET RID OF THE BOTS IN CHAT ROOMS!!!!
Comment by Joe Turner — June 13, 2008 #
nice work. Does anyone have a clue on when it will be out of beta?
Comment by Bo — June 14, 2008 #
Thats nice that you “finished” the maintenance. When will you get around to fixing things that people report to you? Things that don’t work at all like “ignore chat invitations” or photo sharing or even webcams not working. Also have a question, why does it seem that every afternoon people are unable to get sound in the chatrooms?

Is it just me having a problem with signing in as invisible on the beta version (9.0) of messenger? It says it is signing you in as invisible when you set it and sign in – but then once signed in – you are available to all

I wish you would have taken care of the Botz issue during your maintenance update. the chat rooms are unuseable to us chat fans. most od my friends who use messenger and the chat rooms do not use either of them anymore. your chat rooms serivces used to be the best in the industry but now known as the laugh stock of not what to do. instead of trying to up grade messenger with items that do not work , work on getting rid of the botz and related trash service that take up you bandwidth and servers. when you do this then people might start coming back and use your products, aol aim services are beating you !!!!

Comment by frndsfrevr — June 18, 2008 #
isn’t there a way to make it so that you can get only one name in the room per IP adres so people cannot bot the room anymore. look at the screenshot, this is not pleasant chatting http://img26.picoodle.com/img/img26/4/6/20/f_ScreenShot0m_ec283b9.jpg

It’s hard to understand in todays electronic world how the bots still get by your blocks. They are very annoying and have spoiled a good chat room. Health lobby chat was the best but because of bots and one particular vicious individual many have not come back.

Win version is not bad, I like it but mac version (the one I use the most) is very poor. No self-cam (preview) when you are connected to your contacts, no image in profile…
Please, fix these problems, mac users have known fidelity to msgr.
