Upcoming maintenance: June 5

June 4, 2008 on 8:15 am | In News | 53 Comments

We have scheduled some maintenance to Yahoo! Messenger starting at 5pm Pacific time on June 5. We anticipate that this maintenance will be complete by 9pm Pacific time that same evening.

During the maintenance period, some Yahoo! Messenger users, especially those on version 8.0 or earlier, may be logged out of the product unexpectedly. If this does occur, you should be able to log back in immediately. In addition, users on older versions may have trouble using certain features like file transfer, mobile IM and display images.

If you are using Yahoo! Messenger 8.0 or earlier, we recommend upgrading to 8.1 or 9.0 Beta to avoid any interruptions during the scheduled maintenance. Or alternatively, you can use Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.

We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience during the maintenance and appreciate your patience.

  1. I am one of those who use an OLD version – simply because it allows me to IGNORE THOSE NOT ON MY LIST and still see and hear all others in a chat room. Given the amount of unwanted IM’s and the re-occurance of bots in the chat rooms again I find it the best solution to the pesty ones. If you were to include that option in the current versions I would up-date – if you remove the option to use the version I prefer I will simply leave Yahoo chat — the loss of a single person is no big deal to you perhaps — but I do not understand why when this has been mentioned in almost every comment section since the change of that function in version 7.5 you simply ignore what your users are telling you they find important! I pay for the internet and Yahoo happens to be my provider — I think you should listen to us.

  5. I suppose the old versions of Yahoo! Messenger (8 and below) connect to cs1.msg.dcn.yahoo.com to cs59.msg.dcn.yahoo.com servers while the latest versions of messenger (8.1,9 Beta and above) connect to cs101.msg.ac4.yahoo.com to cs130.msg.ac4.yahoo.com and cs101.msg.sp1.yahoo.com to cs101.msg.sp1.yahoo.com servers.

Yahoo should be aware of the fact that all these so called chat clients like Yahelite, Ymlite, Yazak etc and booters/bots which exploit yahoo chat servers connect using cs1.msg.dcn.yahoo.com to cs59.msg.dcn.yahoo.com servers which use the old method of login (YMSG12). If Yahoo! can force all the older versions of messenger to connect using these new batch of servers (AC4/SP1) which use a new and unknown login method it will definitely be one of the best thing Yahoo! would have done in its past 10 years of chat server maintenance history simply because of the fact that not only will it kill all the chat clients and force people to use Yahoo! Messenger but also get rid of the spam as well in 1 shot since these bots use the old method of login.

Good luck Yahoo! Hope for the best.

  6. Unfortunately, I don’t believe it is possible to make the new login authorization mandatory without discontinuing older versions of Yahoo! Messenger such as 6.0 and 7.0.

However, what Yahoo can do is make the older servers more “picky” to make coding third party software for them a harder task.

First and foremost, require that authentication and protocol versions used match. Currently, a lot of third party software uses the authentication from messenger 6.0 in combination with the protocol used in 8.x (YMSG v15). This shouldn’t be allowed. Make it so the 8.x auth MUST be used to log in with YMSG v15, while requiring the older auth to log in to YMSG v12, etc etc.

Secondly, be very particular about the contents of the login packets EXACTLY matching what would be expected from the corresponding version of Yahoo Messenger. If something isn’t quite right, return an error and drop the connection. If done correctly, Yahoo! Messenger will be unaffected and poorly coded third party software that doesn’t imitate messenger perfectly will suffer.

Lastly, make servers and protocols unavabile in situations where they would never be used normally. I can think of several examples of this.

    1. There is a range of 25-30 MUD messenger servers that currently don’t appear to be used by any version of Yahoo Messenger (on the Windows platform anyway). If these aren’t being used in a production environment, make the inaccessible to the internet so bots and other third party software can’t use them.

    2. The DCN and MUD messenger servers accept login requests using the protocol used in Yahoo! Messenger for the Web (i.e. YMSG v101 and v102). The only place this protocol should allowed is when the HTTP transport for YMSG is used. This is vital as those protocols use a simple authentication and allow access to Yahoo Chat.

    3. Due to recent changes, Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 only connects to a new set of servers (AC4/SP1). If there are no plans to change this, consider removing/disabling support for 9.0 on all the other servers (i.e. DCN/MUD).

I fully expect Yahoo to take this message with a grain of salt and I’m okay with that. I’m in no position to make design decisions for Yahoo or tell them how they should or shouldn’t be running their servers or services. However, I do strongly feel that these are things that need to be addressed. All I’m hoping for is that what I’ve mentioned is given at least a little consideration.

    Sincerely,
    Robby Lickenbrock

  9. You really don’t need an older version of Yahoo! Messenger “Ignore Anyone who’s Not on My List”. Simply find a good companion wwwdotytkprodotcom this will block way more then PM’s. I hope Yahoo axe’s anything below Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.0.xxx Force YMSG15-16 authentication for logging in.

  10. Everything below 8 does not use the new servers, funnily enough everything below 8 can be considered what 3rd party clients use…

So would i be right in assuming this is going to happen.

Does Messenger 6/7 have some kind of remote configurable modual, for example, flashing a router with new instructions, if so, messenger users would be given the new routines to either login on the new servers (which would explain a disconnect only on the older servers) and then when it relogs in it’s using the new server?…

And then what, switch off the old servers? keep the old servers but switch off the old authentication?

Pros: Messenger would be safe to use again (no bots)
Pros: Chat Clients will be dead
Pros: Faster less clogged up system

Cons: ummm, no 3rd party, no booters no exploits, don’t need to even worry about messenger crashing, no need to worry about that then i guess there would be no need for tools like Y!Tunnel and YTK to protect messenger either…

    oops that was a Pro.

As far as i see it, people under 8 wont be able to login if there’s no way of updating the program to point to the new server / code for authentication then yahoo can’t really kill off 3rd party without killing off messenger 7 and below unless of course messenger 7 has the ability to somehow be upgraded.

  11. I understand the benefits of the use of newer versions with reguard to third party chat clients and the bot issue. However, that does not solve the problem of unwanted IM’s from “real” people cruising the net for … whatever it is they are looking for. The option to ignore those IM’s while still seeing and hearing all chat in the rooms is something I see as a big plus. I also understand that ytk is a companion client not a 3rd party client however I choose not to use it at this point and cannot understand why Yahoo will not address the issue allowing the options to ignore and still see and hear general chat. To me, to think that removing the 3rd party clients will solve all the woes and unwanted activity is a wish and not a reality – most of the IM’s I get are from individuals the bots may disappear but they won’t- I simply want the option to not have to even have to deal with the cloaked ASL IM’s…

  12. All of those advocates of killing Ymsg should realize that Ymsg is embedded in a ton of cell phones.

I’d be rather annoyed if my cell phone client stopped working.

The solution is not to ban rogue clients. The solution is to fix the problem server-side and allow any client to be used.

  14. @Craig Capel

As for “tools” as you put it. There would still be a need. Because Yahoo! Messenger doesn’t block everything on it’s own. Not talking about booters either. I’m talking about unwanted IM’s and Invites from other users. With the current Y!M you can’t turn off IM’s because chat text will not move then. So explain Craig how would you stop unwanted IM’s and invites from users who you do not wish contact from and still see chat text?

  15. I’d really love to know what’s going to happen to the im clients embedded in cell phones. I’ve got an older sony ericsson phone from when AT&T was still Cingular and it’s got an embedded client in it. I wonder if they’re going to release a new client for the phones so they can continue to connect. Sure would be nice.

  16. Nothing seems to have changed. All Yahoo! has done in this maintenance is get rid of all cs1.msg.dcn.yahoo.com to cs59.msg.dcn.yahoo.com chat servers and replaced them with cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com to cs125.msg.mud.yahoo.com servers which have the same exploits which the old servers used to have. Booters can still login and disconnect people with multiple packets, also chat clients can still login by faking the login header by using YMSG12 login method and messenger version 8 in login headers. And worst of all bots can still login and spam the chatrooms by using the old login method which is used by Yahoo! Messenger 6.0 (YMSG12).

Guess it was too much to expect a miracle happening and see all bots vanish in the blink of an eye. :-]

But its a company they only do what their boss told them to do…and we all know the main concern is business and money first b4 anything else…

  20. If Yahoo programmers are ’smart’ as you put it how come the Captcha method they implemented to stop the bots in chat has failed miserably?

Captcha is a ‘cheap jack’ method of protection and if that’s all they can think of to keep the rubbish out then they ain’t got a clue.

At least the Ytk and Ytunnel boys can protect you from the bots and other the unwanted so they must be the ‘top ass’ mustn’t they?

Messenger programmers keep coming up with ‘bits and pieces’ to make programme look nicer, nothing more than kids stuff and they don’t listen to their users and tackle the serious issues with Messenger and chat.

So I give the thumbs up to those of Ytk and Ytunnel who do understand the problems and do help the users.

    Just my quids worth.

  22. Craig the booter talks about having no booters in chat, ironic to say the least.

We all know the ymsg15/16 login has been cracked already, why are people been delusional.

This as in the past will only be a stint for bot creators and when it comes to third party clients/im programs yahoo will always have a problem unless they start working with teams like trillian and gaim (perhaps making a key login system and encrypting it) and giving one to each of those developers.

Otherwise you will have a influx of talented people breaking yahoo’s login apart…as usual.

    Comment by Dermot — June 6, 2008 #

  23. SGFC..if you read what I said about Yahoo not listening to their users answers your point about the ignore fix doesn’t it? People have pointed that bug out on here ever since this blog started and who at Yahoo has bothered to take notice..zilch.

Ytunnel or Ytk fixes that problem..but as you say there should be no need for addons for that sort of thing.

I was directing my comment about the poor English at YM User. If that’s you then it was directed at the rant under the name YM User.

Yahoo! makes all of these features to send things via Yahoo! Messenger. But they left out the options to block them as well. Even the features that can be blocked on just Y!M alone. Don’t actually block the way they should. Setting your Y!M to “ignore anyone not on your list” doesn’t stop add buddy requests from coming through. Logically it should because you’re supposedly ignoring anyone not on your list. But at the end of the day Yahoo! Chat is free and you get what you pay for. =)

    Comment by SGFC — June 6, 2008 #

  29. You need to change the servers in order to login. csxx.msg.dcn.yahoo.com no longer work. You need to switch the server to cs101.msg.mud.yahoo.com you should be able to login after doing so. Some third party clients have already updated and do login.

Thats what I said Yahoo are more interested in a fancy looking Messenger with all sorts of useless stuff in it to play with..in other words it’s not a Messenger but just an entertainment centre with a chat room option.

But what happens when you get into the chat rooms..how many real people can you find?..not many..it’s all sex bots and trouble makers..you call that chat coz I don’t. At least I can ignore that sort of tripe by using Ytunnel or whatever.

MSN chatrooms quit coz they would have got busted otherwise for child porn and other stuff and Yahoo will go the same way if it’s not careful..so Yahoo better pull their finger out and fix their rooms..forget about all the fancy glossy addons coz they’re for the kiddies.

And SGFC..sorry I thought you were getting at me..as you say you get what you pay for..and in Yahoos case that’s no one listening and a crappy chat service.

Time for my dinner here..have a nice weekend everyone.

    Comment by luckyrer — June 6, 2008 #

  37. Well, clients other that Yahoo! Messenger itself break the Yahoo! TOS, because they’re reproductions of the first party client (Messenger companions/add-ins don’t break the TOS). If these 3rd party clients are allowed to log in, then so can bots and booters. Bottom line: The solution is to lock out anything except the first party client (which of course would include the mobile versions of Y!M).

Now, if anything the “tools” are more of an enhancement than anti-boot these days. Don’t worry about the companions, they’ll live on regardless as they mainly enhance Yahoo! Messenger as it runs in memory, like fixing the “Ignore anyone not on my Messenger List” bug by overriding and replacing it with a zoning system, which is perfect.

If Windows Live Messenger can have addon programs like Messenger Plus which is used by millions, why can’t Yahoo! Messenger?

I use YTK not for the anti-boot options, but for the Messenger bug fixes and enhancements it provides. If Yahoo’s so “smart”, why can’t they properly fix their problems with the client? Why is it those whom make these addons fix those issues within Yahoo’s own client, or replace them with an even better system? Yahoo really should pay attention to these addons, especially YTK, since they do what Messenger should do.

The Messenger companions are a godsend. Respect to all of them, and keep on truckin’!

    Regards,
    Mr. Lawl

Also, hope you know there are a couple server issues on all the servers.

    1. All servers suffer from a bug where you don’t receive the chat leave packet when the 3 hour limit is up.

    2. Some of the voice servers are messed up and not responding. Two of them don’t work, and two more cause a temp voice ban when using them.

Ah yes, so you guys know, Messenger v9.0.0.1389 beta suffers from an extreme bug where no webcam connection (TCP connection) is made to view cams when clicking on a user in the chat room and attempting to view their cam. Cam uploading/broadcasting works fine however.

It’s not impossible to argue that developing a messenger companion is a violation of the Yahoo Messenger ToS, so raving on about them on a Yahoo blog doesn’t strike me as being a bright idea. It’s like playing with fire and hoping you don’t get burned.

Stuff like eye bots and profile scanners would be against the TOS, since they’re a reproduction of the first party clients. Since no companions have anything like this, they’re not breaking the TOS.

3rd party clients are indeed against the TOS though.
