New release of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta

May 29, 2008 on 3:40 pm | In 9.0 version |

Today we launched a new update to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta. This version includes a few new features along with bug fixes, stability and speed improvements, plus some changes to the contact list. Here’s a quick look at what’s new:

Bigger emoticons
They’re not massive, but a little bit bigger so you can express yourself with more oomph.
( vs. ). We also enabled a few more for use in your status message.

Games are back!
We know you missed them in the earlier releases of 9.0, but games are now back! Click the new “Activities” button while you IM to choose a game to play with a friend (or for a plug-in). Checkers, pool, toki toki boom…you know the rest. Note that your friend needs to be on 8.1 or this latest release of 9.0 Beta to play games with you.

Status message improvements
The status message menu has been split into two parts - one where you can indicate your availability (busy, available) and the other for putting in a custom message or a link you want to share. That way even if you’re away from IM, you can still share a funny thought, webpage or video with your friends via your status message.

Yahoo! Updates
Yahoo! Messenger is one of the first products to showcase what your friends are doing on Yahoo!. When a friend buzzes a favorite news story or changes their Avatar, a Yahoo! Update is displayed next to that friend in your contact list (with more detail in their contact card). So even if you’re not actively communicating with them, you can still stay up to date with what they’re doing. To manage what Updates you broadcast, click on your display image in the contact list, then click the “Manage my updates” link. We’ll add more types of updates in the future.

New contact list format button
When we first launched 9.0 Beta, a lot of users weren’t crazy about the extra space in the contact list we created for display images and status messages. So we made two views available for your contact list - detailed or compact. In this latest version, we added a button next to the contact search bar to change it, along with other settings like “Show Offline Contacts”.

Import Contacts - new & improved
Select “Import Contacts” from the Contacts menu and you can add friends from address books you have on other sites like Gmail, Orkut, Yahoo! Address Book, Hotmail, AOL and many more. We’ll pull in your contacts and make it easy for you to start talking with them on Yahoo! Messenger.

Voice in chat rooms for Vista users & faster Captcha process
We know our Windows Vista users have been waiting a really long time for this. We added a fix to this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta that allows Windows Vista users on 9.0 to use voice in chat rooms (and conferences). We also changed the chat room verification process. You can now enter the Captcha code right in the chat room window instead of having to go off to another page.

New IM notification toast
If your IM conversation window falls into the background, this new feature will make sure you don’t miss out on the latest message from your friend. When a new message comes in to the background window, a small notification will pop up from the lower right corner of your screen with the beginning text of the IM your friend just sent. (You can turn this off under Messenger > Preferences > Messages.)

Download Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta

We’ve also welcomed some new countries to Yahoo! Messenger with this latest release. If you’re in Colombia, Chile, Peru or Venezuela, we now have versions of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 in your local language.

User feedback is extremely important to us. We hope that after you’ve lived with this new version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta for awhile, you’ll stop by our feedback page and let us know what you like or don’t like about it. You can also select “Send Feedback” anytime from the Help menu in the contact list window.

To see some of these new features in action, watch the demo video below. We hope you enjoy this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta!

  1. hey nice update… but i really don’t like the new emoticons…. bigger is better but why did u change the animations… they look really weird now… slow too…

    Comment by mad — May 29, 2008 #

  2. i just noticed the emoticons are now same as the webmessenger…. all the emoticons r slow on the yahoo messenger… for instance the dancing emoticon is so smooth on the webmessenger but really slow on normal messenger…

    Comment by mad — May 29, 2008 #

  3. This is very nice; however, when are you planning on fixing more important things? Things such as non-friends knowing that webcams are in use through 3rd parts applications. A lot of people get booted for having a webcam and not accepting someone else.

I think it’s more important to fix some major security flaws in the software before worrying about new features. The new features are totally awesome and this is just my two cents, but I think a lot of people would agree.

    Comment by Acuity — May 29, 2008 #

  4. First of all, thanks for including my country on this release. I use YM in english but I know that some of my friends will be upgrading to the beta.

Now on the new features, I think the emoticons are too big, I never liked the ones on the webmessenger. Could this be an extra option in further versions? Like “Use smaller emoticons”

Small bug/glitch: the regular keyboard shortcut for the sigh emoticon isn’t working, you need to type ;-< instead to see it. But that way it will work only with buddies using the latest build.

  5. Another issue: I don’t have an option to disable the new toast under Alerts & Sounds

  6. Oh. My. God. I love you Yahoo. Really, I DO!

    Comment by Venom — May 29, 2008 #

  7. Alright, the bug reports…

    1. The Preferences window is laggy, and it’s difficult to click on each area of the interface.

    2. IM window sizes aren’t saved after exiting, nor is the setting to display avatars saved, nor is the adjustment to the input area of IM windows.

    3. Messages from users (especially using the new beta) are repeated.

Will be reporting more. This is right off the bat.

    Comment by Venom — May 29, 2008 #

  8. Ok, a couple more…

    1. Ignore is broken in chat.

    2. Buddy list ad overlaps the bottom part of the window.

    3. Ignore anyone not on my Messenger List still appears to be broken.

    4. Word filter sticking with the global option still seems to be broken.

Overall, this new beta build is extremely buggy, and crash prone.

    Comment by Venom — May 29, 2008 #

  9. There is a bug in changing the skin which is very easy to reproduce.

If your IM box icon is set to large and you change the skin, the icon will change to small.

In order to make your icon large again, you must right click on it the icon and select “Small Image.” When you right click on it again, while this time selecting “Large Image,” your icon will become large once more. This happens every time you change your skin.

    Comment by Acuity — May 29, 2008 #

  10. In the “has been automtically ignored for sending too many messages.” message, there’s a typo. Automatically not automtically.

    Comment by Venom — May 29, 2008 #

  11. well i do got to say the new Build yous just released is much better and looks nicer but in the skin part i see when you change skins yous are forgetting some place is that are still gray when you change a skin the big one is when in a room the part you would see a user talking that big hug line stays gray and it don’t look right if you pick some other skin

the other problem would be with still opening Yahoo Messenger takes a while to open that needs to be fixed and yeah the face is they don’t look that good with them that big how they use to be from 8.1 and down they looked better other then that things are looking better

    Comment by Cisco — May 29, 2008 #

  12. Just so you know, there are people who do not like the newer smilies. Customizations for putting the old V6 smilies into V7/8 are among the most popular third-party downloads out there. Give people the option to choose the design and the look&feel they like best, don’t force something that you think is “new and improved” down their throats, or they will start voting with their feet. Don’t fix something that isn’t broken.

  21. After seeing this blog I’ve tried About/Check for updates in my Yahoo. It told me:
You are currently running the latest Yahoo! Messenger version 9.0.0.907.
Had to do manual setup to get to the real current version.

  22. Is there a reason why Yahoo! has removed the ‘Firewall with no proxies’ option from the connection preferences for this latest version of messenger? Does this mean Yahoo is getting rid of the http based chat servers in the near future? If so thats really not so good news as these http chat servers were unbootable and had protection against any type of attack sent using packets with multiple yahoo ids.

  24. Rick> The newer cs101-130 AC4/SP1 servers are patched against server side disconnections, not to mention most of the normal cs1-60 DCN servers are patched against server side disconnections.

Oair> Simple to do. Override the new emoticons with the ones from the last v9.0 beta.

Yahoo> Should do some more testing on Windows Vista. A lot of things are broken or incorrectly work. Buddy list placement, IM window size, and the laggy Preferences just to name a few.

  28. Ok, this is my final listing of bugs and other issues present in this beta of Yahoo! Messenger v9.0.

    1. On Windows Vista, opening the Preferences window results in some lag before it opens. Works fine on XP, as it opens instantly.

    2. On Windows Vista, navigating the preferences window is sometimes slow, and it lags when clicking on options.

    3. Instant Message window sizes are not remembering once you exit Yahoo! Messenger v9.0.0.1389, nor are they respecting the existing Height and Width registry keys.

    4. Avatars and display pictures seem to automatically “hide” themselves at random, depending if the person signs off or on, or in a chat.

    5. In the “has been automtically ignored for sending too many messages.” message, there’s a typo. Automatically not automtically.

    6. Auto-ignore is too sensitive, resulting if somebody posts over 3 times quickly. I’d extend this to at least 7 in a short time.

    7. There is a server issue or a Messenger issue occurring when using Messenger v9.0.0.1389 where messages are received or sent doubled. People on lower versions of Messenger can confirm it occurs, as messages from a user using v9.0.0.1389 are doubled.

    8. There is still unskinned areas of the voice chat area of the chat window when voice is active, resulting in a dark grey area.

    9. The Messenger list ad, can sometimes overlap the bottom of the window, partially overlapping the Plugins/Add Contact area.

    10. Using “Ignore anyone not on my Messenger List” still results in chat text not being seen.

    11. There is no way to turn off the tooltips in Messenger, other than a registry key from the v8.1.0.421 build.

    12. In all versions of Messenger, the sign out of chat notification after the 3 hour limit is not received anymore. You don’t receive the exit room packet.

    13. If you have Messenger set to display Nickname or First and Last Name, and your contact details are blank, it’s supposed to show your ID. While it does this, in the process it shows the main ID for all alias IDs.

    Comment by Venom — May 30, 2008 #

  29. Sorry, I forgot one…

    14. On Windows Vista, the placement of the Messenger list window against the right edge of the screen and existing, results in Messenger not saving the exact placement. It’s slightly a couple pixels above and to the left of the absolute edge of the screen. Tested with a 1152×864 screen resolution.

    Comment by Venom — May 30, 2008 #

  30. The newer version looks great and all, but the stupid larger emoticons are using up extra memory that it really shouldn’t need to use… Plus, while some are nice, bigger isn’t always better as others have said. Please give us the option of switching back to the older smiles.

    Comment by John Doe — May 30, 2008 #

  36. So far, I’m enjoying the streamlined UI, some extra spiffyness in the options, and the status message thing is sweetness. But still, oh great Yahoo Messenger Gods and Goddesses… Why no tabbed chat option??

Seriously… Trillian has had it for a long time… AdiumX on the Mac has it… Why is it that in the previous beta (didn’t see it in this one) there is an option to have all messages from un-added contacts appear in one window (whether that’s tabbed or not I don’t know, never had the chance to test it), but simple regular tabbed chat windows haven’t made it yet?

Here’s what you do. Set up a tabbed chat option (look at AdiumX’s setup–Trillian’s was lamesauce). Make it possible to switch from one tab to another mouselessly (AdiumX allows you to Alt-Left/Alt-Right to go from one to the other… genius!), and I will never look for a replacement for Yahoo Messenger ever again (in the forseeable future–if a YM-compatible client comes out with the ability to IM real physical objects, well, then you’re stuck haha).

You have my word on that. So please… Tabbed chatting FOR THE WIN!

Please get up to date on Mac side of things!

    Comment by Jj — May 31, 2008 #

  48. If I may, I would like to ask that you make provisions for a “user sized” message window (the one you type in). The fixed size does not allow for ease of reading a typed reply, nor for editing it. In MHO, if you want to make Yahoo IM a viable service you need to provide the basics that all users are looking for and forget about the eye candy and such. In today’s world, IM is becoming more and more popular in the business environment…and as it stands, I see Yahoo IM lagging far behind in this area….too much attention being payed to the teeny boppers and not enough to genuine functionality for the the adult, and business world.
Personally I don’t care about a crown or other trappings…and I find the large emoticons, and those that leap out at you on Vista to be childish and very distracting.
Please grow up and concentrate on making Yahoo IM functional, bug free, and clean (free from bloat and extraneous trappings).

    Comment by James Rancourt — May 31, 2008 #

  49. Actually, the new Messenger completely lacks X and Y window coord registry keys for PM windows and chat room windows.

Looking at the registry keys closely, there’s a new key called SavedDimension, which doesn’t seem to do anything. AND if you do create the X and Y window position keys, Yahoo! Messenger completely disregards them.

    Comment by Venom — May 31, 2008 #

  50. Actually, I found out that to turn the Toast thing off, you have to go under Messages instead. ((Messenger > Preferences > Messages)) Not Alerts, like it said in the description. =]

  51. I like how the chat verification is in the window and now a separate browser. Still too many bots, though. And I noticed that in chat, yahoo will randomly stop using a person’s nickname when it was using it less than five seconds before. D:

    16. My Profiles provides no way to turn profile IDs “inactive”.

  63. Numbers 20, 21, 22, 23, and 24…

    20. Taskbar flashing for new messages received in chats don’t work anymore.

    21. MessageFormatting seems to reset at random, and it applies itself to the chat room. It should save, and it shouldn’t apply to the chat window.

    22. On Windows Vista, Messenger’s windows seem to “lag” for at least 15 seconds. If you click on it during this time, Messenger will crash.

    23. Chat room window appears after you exit chats, if you have Messenger minimized to tray and you bring it back up.

    24. Horizontal scrollbar still appears in the chat room user list if you minimize and restore the window.

    Comment by Venom — June 1, 2008 #

  64. Number 25…

    25. Yahoo! Messenger is slow to startup and sign-in, and it lags when you exit it.

    Comment by Venom — June 1, 2008 #

  65. It’s back to 922 for me, there’s no significant improvement for me, I hate the full skinned windows, some are too pink (an option for the 922 version would be welcome), emoticons are too slow. There’s no snap to screen edges, no tabs and the biggest bug I know of: if I send a file to someone, I can’t play said file while it’s transfering, but if I’m already playing the file and then send it, y!m starts using 90+ CPU and hangs.

    Better luck next time…

    Example: Not Much
like the old style of messenger

    Instead of…..

Example #1 : Hi whats up?
lol (the whole multiple message until someone says something is REALLY annoying to me there should be an option to where you can change it back to the old style, and I may have over looked it, but if there isn’t one…there def. should be one because it’s annoying, and i’m sure i’m not the only user who thinks that.)

    Example #2: Not much, You?

  76. FINALLY! A new update; i can’t wait to try it out. I’ve been a yahoo member since 2000, and I still enjoy the benefits than any other service. Even though i have experienced some downfalls on Yahoo Messenger, i am confident that the update has gotten rid of these downfalls.

    Thank you:)

  77. @James R: if you put the mouse over the bottom border of the conversation area (just above the emoticon, audible, etc. buttons), you’ll get a resize cursor. You can then click and drag to resize the message entry area. Or have I misunderstood the request?

@venom: to enable/disable voice in a chat or conference window, does alt-A-I not work for you?

@Erased: I’m curious what you find so annoying about not repeating the name next to each message. Is it not clear who the message is from?

@Venom: bug 20 didn’t seem to work in 8.1, either. For 22, which version of Vista are you using? What are you doing when you see the lag?

    Thanks.

And yes, bug 20 has existed for a long time (since v7.X at least). I’m just mentioning it hoping it gets fixed.

Oh, and I heard Launchcast can crash Messenger for some users.

  89. I love this new beta! I only have suggestions for improvement. Number 1 and the most obvious, add tabbed windows already!! How long are we going to have to wait? AIM has had them for awhile now. Are they not your competitor? Number 2, there’s got to be a way to fix the web cam feature to work like WLM’s!

Number three, they need to separate the file transfer window!! The files popping up in the chat window just isn’t cutting it. Where’s the information about the files being sent? It needs its own window! It doesn’t have to be totally separate. It can be built into the window, just make a transfers button so we can switch to it and check on our files. It can be right next to Photos.

Also, have an option to dock it if the user wants to. That way it could be its own separate window if needed. Add those very useful changes, and I think they’ll be on the right track!

  94. couple of issues for me:

    - some contacts are appearing as “I’m Mobile” but when i chat them up they claim they’re not. proof is their instant replies. mobile users cant reply right away cause of slow fingers, slower connections. they also upgraded to the latest version.

    - when another program runs, those which takes up the whole screen like say games, ym doesnt function right afterwards. the tiny notifications which appear at the bottom right dont appear anymore. skin issues, etc.

    - when loading up an imenvironment with a user. then after you’re done with it, closed the chat window, signed out. turned off computer, turned on, open ym, sign in. then when you chat up a different ym user, the last imenvironment gets loaded! its a little embarassing if your boss decides to chat you up early in the morning when you were playing with the emoticats imenvironment with a friend last night. as far as i remember, imenvironments only loads if chatting with same user again.

    - the small new mail icon sometimes stays in the tray notification area even when you’ve loaded the newest emails in yahoo mail. the last beta always removed the icon once new mail is loaded. this one doesnt always do that.

    - its a really good idea to bring back “Be Right Back” or at the very least, put up a guide how to do it. i realized i first have to select the Busy icon to get the right mini-yellow-me icon, then type in Be Right Back.

  96. Yahoo! should really get more supportive of the community it serves, and should Open Source the whole IM’er program.

I also strongly believe Yahoo! should drop their protocol in support of the Open Source Jabber protocol like Google did for Google Talk/Gmail. Not only will Yahoo! then be Open Source but users will be able to chat with people from Yahoo!, Google, and even other Jabber communities for free.

Yahoo! would then be able to help make Jabber become an even better Open protocol and help people get connected in ways like never before. You can help implement your Video/Voice chat on all Open Source applications that can connect to this protocol. More software options, more fun.

    Comment by Brad Jensen — June 3, 2008 #

  97. I need a shortcut key to view someone’s profile from the IM window.

Actions -> Contact Options -> View Profile is as counterintuitive as it gets. The entire “Contact Options” submenu belongs under “View”. This requires ZERO code change, only a form change in menu editor, so do it already.

Put View Profile where it belongs:

    View -> Profile

Still testing other annoyances (Photoshare was largely broken in previous beta)

Sarah - where is the complete changelog for this build? Give us access to your Bugzilla so we don’t waste time reporting duplicate bugs.

Please implement server-based tracking of ignore. If 20 people ignored one person in less than 5 minutes, chances are that “person” is a porn bot. Ban known bot IPs. Make ignore list unlimited and store it server-side. Give me an option to archive my IMs server-side AND import my old archives. Fix the autoignore feature in chat rooms.

I am one of your power users.

    Thanks for improving on CAPTCHA.

  102. I’ve only just downloaded the beta so it’s still too early for me to post any comments regarding its functionality/stability.

However, I would like to make a few suggestions and let’s hope that others will agree with me!

    1) How about some spelling check? A facility like that would be very helpful for the users that don’t use abbreviations when they’re typing.

    2) The ability to select whether one wants to see big or regular sized emoticons. The new ones are a bit odd…

    3) What about being able to see the avatars/photos of MSN messenger users and vice versa?

    4) Tabbed interface for multiple conversations. Come on people, this is a must!! Even PDF readers out there have a tabbed interface nowadays!

    5) I think that’s it for now…

Oh, and I found a bug: when you make the messenger window very narrow and the menu items have to wrap to a second line, the skin looks really bad, it’s like CSS gone bad in a web page.

I get to see a lot of complaints on this page and as Brad Jensen said in a previous post, it would be beneficial for all of us to be able to log these bugs and feature requests to a separate place and not here.

However, when you see complaints it usually means that there are people out there who love your product and want to see it work properly and be better than any other similar product out there (hint - hint).

Thank you very much for all your hard work so far and here’s hoping that by its final release, Yahoo messenger will be the best IM software out there!

    :)

  103. This release intermittantly hangs up in the system tray on exit. Photo sharing still not working. Webcam still freezes. Ignore chat invites still broken.
Love the new captcha, though I wonder why it is still in use since the bot makers have found a way around it.

  104. 1.Hard to describe but when opening a new IM window I hear what appears to be a quick wav file (sound of a man). It makes me sound crazy but when I disabled the sounds for Yahoo IM it went away.

It drove me to the point where I had to go back to trusty 8.x.

I will try and see if it’s repeatable on my home machine.

    2. The UI seems a bit disportionate. In the small icon mode for the friend list it still doesn’t come close to the 8.x yahoo size. The large icons for the friend list is frankly too large and takes up too much screen real estate.

    3. The pop-up of the window when you hover over a friend (whether to call, im, talk etc) needs to be user adjustable. Again on a large and busy desktop a window hover should be user determined.

    4. You need to have a bug database online as users have stated.

  120. I’ve been using your IM client for as long as I can remember, which is actually saddening because I saw it just dropping in quality one version after another, until I’ve gotten to the point I’m looking at 3rd party IM clients with connectivity to your servers as yours is not a usable client for me anymore:

Emoticons are fun, but sometimes you could do without them (for example when sharing and discussing source code with someone you always get something interpreted as an emoticon) , but there’s no option to disable them, au contraire they just got bigger and you get them in your status as well, breaking links where there’s a match (example: ftp://test_user:Discrete@server.com)

The message archive is useless. Sure I can keep all my conversations with all my contacts indefinitely if I choose to do so, but what’s the use if a basic function such as Find has never been provided.

When transferring files I heard rumors that the client would try to establish a direct connection to the one you were talking to for a faster transfer. I say “rumor” because it never seemed to work for me until the previous version 9 beta, with which I indeed obtained speeds comparable to getting the file from my ftp server directly. But with this new beta version, it seems to be broken again.

Skins! I don’t want them, never did. Why is there no longer a “classic skin” option?

    Also… Tabs?

And regarding the status - I use links in them and the new separate edit boxes seem to me the worst possible idea in its current implementation, as there’s no warning when length(status)+length(link)>max_status_length.

The buddy list - why are you automatically taken to the search contact bar when typing something? To me this seems a step back because: a) I have no means to quickly search a group in the buddy list (to start a conference, for example) because only contacts are filtered. If I enter the name/id of a contact, I can either hit enter to open a chat window or escape to cancel search, in which case the selection is lost. So no matter what you want to do, you have to do a lot of scrolling if you want to find a group or need to select multiple contacts.

And speaking of the chat window, although sounds are disabled, I hear a weird sound each time I open a new window.

In the end, just a small rant: Does anybody from Yahoo! actually listen to its users needs and demands when it comes to the Messenger client? Because right now it just seems things are getting changed just for the sake of change, and with no actual testing being done before public release (ok, I do understand that this is a beta, but things like the call/sms swap and the contact still being called for voice chat even though you hit “end call” before he/she answers are brain-dead bugs).

But if I’m wrong (and I certainly hope this is the case, otherwise everybody will eventually just start using Pidgin and Trillian to connect to yahoo, and in the end just move to a different IM network/protocol), here are a couple of advanced features I’d pay to have implemented:

    a) sub-groups in the buddy list - it would really give a new dimension to organizing your contacts

    b) encrypted chats using public/private key pair (generated from a password, certificate, smart card etc) which also allows validating the identity of the person you are chatting with).

    Comment by nth — June 7, 2008 #

  121. nth, there is an option to disable emoticons.

I agree that there should be an archive search function.

And the archive should also be stored online, so we could access the same archive from any computer. How about adding the conversations from the stand alone client to the webmessenger archive? That would be great!

    Comment by daniel — June 7, 2008 #

    Comment by jolyssa129 — June 7, 2008 #

  127. And one more thing: Memory usage - when I start the client it uses about 4MB memory, then when I log in it jumps to min 80MB. Handle count (min 700) and number of threads (min 25) is also incredible.

    @daniel:
Messenger/Preferences/Messages/Enable emoticons is hardly a simple way to do it, since this setting is global and affects messages only from that moment on, causing enough “wait, smilies were on, please send it again” (or the alternative, close the chat windows, disable emoticons, reopen it and hit f3) to make you notice. It should be per chat, saved between sessions option just like the imvironments and all that other stuff that gets teenagers excited are.

As for the archive, I’m already paranoid enough about the messages being plaintext to willingly accept my chat logs being stored on a remote server just to have a feature the main client is missing (am I right assuming the stand-alone version is still the main?)

    Comment by nth — June 7, 2008 #

    Comment by Skye — June 8, 2008 #

  129. 1) I fully support archive search idea. I’ve sent it to development team long time ago. I have to use 3rd party programs to get that simple feature that should be like self-obvious.

    2) New smilies are very low-res/cheap looking while the previous ones were high quality.

    3) What’s the whole idea about the new status? If I go ‘out for a walk’ now I have to do like 4 clicks: 2 to set the dot to red and 2 to select my status. When I’m ‘out for a walk’ I’m ALWAYS unavaliable. Why would I have to select it every single time.
And remembering the status after clean computer restart sux too. I’d be ok when computer reboots by itself (power failure or something). But when I turn on my computer I’m usualy there. And even when I’m not, Idle status takes care of notifying the others I’m not.

As for the Vista version number, the latest version is (1.2.0.1029).

Hmm well I just tried to download and it gave me a pop up that I already have the latest version installed???

So where did you find that build #??

I rechecked mine and yup its 1.2.0.1029 VISTA beta

    Comment by HOODY — June 10, 2008 #

  149. Hoody, you’re right.

The 9.0 number is for the 9.0 beta– I apologize. All that matters is, yes, you’re running the latest version, and if you’re happy with the Vista client, stick with that.

    Sorry for my mistype!

  150. Many of us have alias profiles and I deleted mine after discovering it was no longer inactive and the “My Profiles” option is gone from the Messenger menu, so you can’t make them inactive anymore.
Is it just a problem with my installation or is it like that for everyone running the latest 9.0 Beta build?

  152. hi…
I am an Vista OS user… i have just downloaded the new update 4 the yahoo messenger 9 beta and it’s awesome, I like it very much and i like all the new features but there seems some problems with Vista although the older version 9 beta was working well in Vista…

First… the messenger doesn’t work when double clicking the icon… it stops working on Vista and doesn’t work until i run it as an administrator

Second…the instant messengering lags and most of the messages are lost and sometimes i can’t receive the messages from the other person whom i am talking with

thanks for the hard work and i really need to know the problem with Vista… these problems don’t appear in XP

  154. I recently downloaded Messenger 9.0 Beta for XP. The only problem I’ve noticed so far is that the symbols that appear in the Friends list appear to be reversed.- the mobile phone and telephone handle. The writing that appears is correct, and it works … but the symbols are swiched. I don’t really mind, but thought I would report it anyway. I’m sure someone has already noticed this.
    Thanks.

  155. Where have the pre written status messages like ‘Be Right Back’, ‘Not On My Desk’, gone in YM 9 Beta for XP?!?! I don’t want to type them, when I am leaving in a hurry!

There was no need to match the messenger’s window interface area colour with the chosen skin either! It was OK as it previously was

This version has an issue with ESET NOD32 Antivirus version 3.0.650.Exiting YM gives the following error message: http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/539/warningaq8.jpg

Thanks for the wonderful product though
    Cheers!

  156. Hallo all..
Anyone else have a file and photo sharing issue? I had a sudden disappearance of the ability to share photos and files. Files half send and crash.. receive same issue. Photos will partially show up in thumbnails but are pixelated in the share window.
SO frustrating! I desperately need this feature for working with clients. I have uninstalled, rebooted, cleaned, cleared, yada…and installed the 9.0 BETA and still no go.
    Any hoots anyone? HELP.
email me at reddkatt at comcast dot net.
    Thanks in advance! Katt

There’s no box or arrow by my name. It keeps crashing and I have to keep reinstalling it. I have filed 4 reports to Yahoo witno responses. It apparantly isn’t compatible to Vista Home
Basic 32 bit system. I have tried to go back to the older version and it keeps installing the New Beta version. I want my old version back. How do I get it. This one sucks. When I try to click on a contact to IM them, their name just turns black.

I have problems sending large files. For eg. any file thats over 25 MB almost never goes throuugh.
I goes through almost to the end and then the file transfer stops. YUCKS.
And then on top of this it crashes my computer if the file transfer has got stopped a couple of times.
Its not my computer issue because it never crashes otherwise. But when doing large file transfers it alsmost always does.

  184. So I’m wondering,

Your betaing 2 versions that will run on Vista, which one is going to be your “final” version ?

You are working on a V9 beta, which works on XP and Vista, and a Vista only version in beta.

Is yahoo planning to have 2 separate versions of messenger from now on?, or until XP is gone? or are you going to merge them and have one final?

    Comment by HOODY — July 3, 2008 #

  185. Hi Hoody,

We’ll continue supporting and developing both versions 9.0 and Vista. At the moment, there is not feature parity between the two. But once Messenger for Vista supports all of our core features (webcam, chat rooms) etc., I would imagine most Vista users would make the switch since that version is specifically built and optimized for the Vista OS. Thanks,

    Sarah Bacon

  197. On, build 9.0.0.1389… The emoticons look horrendous and disturbing. In this case, bigger is certainly not better. The previous ones had a small, almost cute aura about them. The shortcuts for the emoticons are quite annoying as well, like :b for nerd and :s for confused. I know MSN Messenger uses those shortcuts, but you’re not them and shouldn’t be. And the sound alert when clicking on a contact’s name… why? It’s not like I’m suddenly making an error. I want to start a conversation, not an error report. And please fix the integration of the older history archives. I for one have important information in there that I need to reference every now and then, but it’s all jumbled with hex codes and missing words.

  210. I’m using windows xp, and v. 9.0.0.1389beta. I have a problem while chatting with a friend. She and I will be talking and then all of a sudden nothing. She can not receive my messages nor I hers. Sometimes I can see her typing but no message appears. The most frustrating thing is sometimes she types something I can see it and reply but she doesn’t see my reply. A few minutes later it will be working fine but eventually drops out again.

She says this doesn’t happen with anyone else she talks to. I don’t know what version she’s using but I believe she’s on a vista machine. I don’t really talk with anyone else via IM so I have nothing to compare this to.

I’ve been scouring the net looking for an answer. I’ve tried multiple suggestions and nothing works. I’ve tried updating all my drivers and software and nothing works. The only thing I can see is that many people are complaining about similar problems since v.8.0. So I can only conclude that it’s because of the new version.

Is anything being done to fix this?

  212. I’ve reverted to v.7.5.0.647 and it seems to be working much better. So there are definitely some issues with the newer versions.

Also in a possible related issue, with the versions 8.0 and above I wasn’t able to receive photos from the same friend, they would be pixilated, no matter how long I waited for them to clear up (yes I waited for an hour or so once with photosharing open to the one picture), it wouldn’t work.

So where is the offical link to submit bug reports?
