Scroll to zoom in Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
May 20, 2008 on 3:16 pm | In Vista version |
I picked up a new tip today for Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Beta. By using the keyboard and the scroll wheel on your mouse, you can increase or reduce the size of your contacts in your list, or zoom in and out of your IM conversation. Here’s how it works…
Click anywhere on your Yahoo! Messenger for Vista contact list window. Then hold down the Ctrl key and with your other hand, move the scroll wheel on your mouse up and down. You’ll see the contact list size menu appear and as your roll the wheel, the lever will move and the size of your contacts will change.
The same thing works in the IM window. Click anywhere in the IM window, then hold Ctrl while scrolling your mouse wheel. Voila – instant enlargement of your text (and your emoticons).
Click here to watch a brief video of the feature in action.

Yea, i tested it. works fine! Yahoo! Messenger for Vista is great, but the only problem is the performance. It is not very fast on many computers. Of course it works fine for me, with 4GB of RAM, 3.1Ghz Core2 Due Intel CPU and NVIDIA 8800GTX, but these are too much to keep a messenger working smooth. I tested it on 2GB of ram, a 8600 and almost the same cpu, and it worked so slow that i had to uninstall it and install the 9.0 BETA on that computer.

Hi Sarah,
This is off-topic, but I have no idea how else to reach you or anyone else on the messenger team. YIM appears to actively block certain URLs from being linked in status messages. So far it does this for me for facebook, flickr, picasa, and tinyurl (tinyurl USED to be my solution to this problem, but now I can’t even use that).
Basically, when I create a satus message that’s linked to one of those sites, YIM simply does not update my status link. I know this because I have myself on my buddy list, and my status does not change. The list of URLs that are affected has been growing, and so has my frustration. The status has no problem linking to “http://tinyurl.co”, for example, but as soon as I try again adding the “m”, the program refuses to link.
I know many others who are having identical problems, and I’ve found a couple others who are having NO problem (one of whom has the exact same version of YIM as me, which is 8.1.0.421. This problem does NOT seem to be affected by the YIM version I’m using). This makes me think it is some sort of server-side bug.
If there’s any way you could please please please help me with this, or forward this on to someone who can, or let me know who I can contact with this complaint, I would be very appreciative.

Thats cool to know just like what you can do under vista icons by doing the same thing.
Incase no one know you can make your icons on the desktop bigger by doing that too.
Any updates on upcoming addins or performance related coming along soon sarah?

Yeah you dummies… but there’s no photo sharing in this Vista Messenger. Plus when you type it has a delay. And I’m not running 4×86 here.

Te features it lacks are not to blame. remember people, it is BETA yet. But the performance issue really has to be fixed. Because Y! messenger for vista is niot practical for many systems. The delay thing crizatu says is because of this issue. You must remember it is supposed to be a lightweight application, not a resource-taking game!

I have noticed an increase in the usage of the letter/word “beta” to denote a feature-incomplete product.
The software industry has another letter/word for that. It is “alpha.” When a product has reached a “beta” milestone, it is generally considered to have all product features implemented. There are several known “show-stoppers” and annoyances that need to be fixed.
It is only once the bugs that are targetted to be fixed by the release-to-market date are fixed that a “release candidate” is produced. Any bugs found during this period are prioritized and fixed only if necessary before the initial product release.
As I see it, Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista is still in the “alpha” stage of its development since there are several missing features.

There really really needs to be an option to have emoticons behave as they do in previous versions of Y! Messenger.
After a while the huge emoticons bouncing into view gets highly annoying, and can you image if you get a message that has many of them? Or even worse, if someone tries to boot or spam you with a message filled with those emoticons?

I am unable to get Yahoo Messenger for Vista to get just beyond entering my user ID and password without it crashing. I’m starting to think that I would enjoy having the issues you all describe. At least I would have a working program.

I love Yahoo, and I love Messenger, PLEASE resolve the performance issues in the Vista version of the product so that it’s usable. Uninstalled and replaced with v9 until then.
And please don’t sellout to MS, otherwise all hope will be dead.

I like it! i really like how everything is smoth and it sorta flows instead of just popping up, like the colour swatch thing with all the colors at different angles. I’m guessing that there will be more colors in the final verson of it, because i like orange! I also agree with the one previous poster that said that it would be slow on other computers, my comptuer is very fast, top of the line, so it has no problems with it, but on a cheaper computer it would probably be slower.
However, i love the design and i love how you can change the size and detail of your messenger list. Something i dont’ like however, is that when i click to look at the emodicons they are HUGE and they look sorta bad and off balance the sleekness of the messenger.

Overall I do like the Vista version of YIM, and yes I understand that it’s still in beta form. Is there a target for a final release, or is the program in an open ended state of perpetual development?
While I like the program, have to echo the previous comments about performance or lack therof. I run a celeron cpu with 2g ram and the lag is intolerable after a short period of time. So much so I switch back to 9 for everyday use. Looking forward to the next refresh.

Wow, this conversation has died in the last three months. To tell the truth, I have YIM for Vista but I don’t run it at all. It’s just too lacking. It doesn’t even have archives, for cryin’ out loud. Archive ability is what YIM the leader in online messaging. Yahoo archives are the cleanest, neatest, most organized in the industry. They’re even broken out by user, conversation type, and date. When I came to Yahoo, that was the feature that really drew me in to stay. I had a busy life at the time, balancing work, school, and friends, and they allowed me to carry on a conversation without having to actively remember what it was about or what had already been said. I could just look it up. Plus, archives in YIM are encrypted and locked, so nobody can read them without your user ID and password and a live internet connection to sign in. But, I got off on a tangent. The Vista version is seriously lacking in features and is a resource hog. The developers need to reign the beast in and saddle it with the features we love.
