Contact list views in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0

When we first released Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta, some users were upset about the changes made to the contact list. Compared to its older sibling 8.1, the display images were larger and positioned on the right, and there was a lot more space devoted to each contact in the list. For users with lots of contacts, this can mean a lot of scrolling to find a friend in their list.
In response to the feedback, we included a preference in the Contacts menu for the appearance of the contact list. While this has been available in 9.0 Beta for awhile now, not everyone knows about it so I figured it was worth mentioning again.
There are two modes for your contact list – Detailed and Compact. The detailed list mode shows larger display images for your friends, puts status messages on a separate line, and spaces out your contacts. In contrast, the compact list mode tightens up your list by putting the friend’s name and status on one line, and uses small display images.
To change your contact list mode, just click on the “Contacts” menu at the top of your main Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 window and choose “Compact List” or “Detailed List”. This preference will remain even after you sign out of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.

Hi Donna-
Your address book is now a group in your Yahoo! Messenger contact list. Scroll down in your list – it’s usually the last group. You can also use the contact search bar at the top to look somebody up in your address book. Sounds like a good topic for a blog post…

I have tryed to logon to the new yahoo im 9.0 and i’m not able to. Down with yahoo 9.0 i’ll go back to the other yahoo till you fix the login problem. I’ve tryed yahoo 9.0 on xp and vista and no luck at all.

Every time I try to click on someone’s name in my friend’s list to IM them, I get a windows -esqu box that says Contact Details. I am unable to IM anyone because of this.

James – try double clicking on a contact in your list. That will open an IM window.

I have tried twice now to download the 9.0 version and i have even restarted my computer and also shut it down completely and restarted it and it still looks the same, am I doing something wrong?

I downloaded Yahoo Messenger 9.0 last night. When I went to call setup, It detected my voice, but when I went to sound setup, it showed my sound card but no sound came out. It took me forever to get it to work. Thank god. Now when I log on, the area where all my contacts are supposed to be is blank. nothing is there. the only thing I can see is the top part with the options, and the bottom part with the Adds and the search bar. I have tried restarting messanger but Still no luck. Why is it doing that? Is there a way to fix this on my end or is this an issue on you guys part? I am running Windows Vista Home Premium.

major problem with yahoo messenger v9 beta regarding message archive. i have it set to keep online messages but clear them when i sign out. this does not work and my messages are still there in the archive when i shut down the pc and come back online.

Hi Administrator,
I was very excited with the all new beta version and downloaded it. It worked fine for the first time, until my system got rebooted automatically (thats not a yahoo problem) But, once I had login again, I am not able to see any contacts. The area where the contacts list (and groups) for chat is shown remains completly white (blank). I tried several options from the prefrences, though it is nothing to do with it. My friends are online, and on the webmessenger they are visible.
Please let me know if a solution is available immediately or else I will have to switch to the older version

Here are a few issues and requests I have for Yahoo! IM 9.0
File Transfer
File Transfers with 9.0 has been freezing up and not completing the transfer.
Limit on # of groups
I just installed Yahoo! IM 9.0 and was told that I had reached the limit and had to delete a group. I really need to be able to create more groups as my contact list is constantly growing.
What happened to the games?
Stealth settings
I noticed that if I want to change my stealth settings from appearing permanently offline to a user or group I have to first select appear online before I can select appear offline. We should be able to switch back to appearing offline to the user or group directly instead of selecting appear online before we can go back to appearing offline. This process defeats the reason for having stealth settings.

I can only see the contact list. What happened to the people without a messenger account or computer? I use phone out to call people without a computer and now they don’t show up in the contacts list! Can this be fixed or do I have to add bogus messenger ids to everyone?

Please help me out here. I just download the very update of YM! 9.0 Beta but the contact list is now become blank. I can only pm people using instant message using Actions. Do I miss something upon installation? I already reinstalled twice, no problem with 8.1. If there is some parts missing over my OS, (win xp sp 2), please let me know. I dont want to reinstall again to 8.1 as it taking too long. Waiting for your feedback ASAP. Thanks again! Cheers..

Hi,
Yahoo Launchcast plugin doesn’t show up on the list. I am not able to listen to music because of this. This is really bugging me as I have sent several emails to yahoo but no reply at all. How come the launchcast plugin is not displayed for me to add? Has it been removed from messenger. The only plug-ins I see at the moment is Yahoo Answer & finance. Is this a typical Beta 9.0 messenger problem/bug????????

Yahoo 9 has a few serious bugs…
First, my pc specs….
512 mb 800 mhz ram, 1.7 ghz p4 processor, maxtor 160 gb 7,200 rpm harddisk, xp pro clean install, ati all in wonder graphics.
- Yahoo 9 takes far longer than 8.1 to sign in or out
- Tabbed messaging should be standard in 9
- Voice really should work in Vista
- Ads on bottom should never overflow into & hide the add a contact/plugin screen
- Yahoo should have an option to not install, nor have anything listed about plugins in it at all… I personally do NOT care for any extra plugins, nor use them, nor want them slowing me down for any reason
- There should still be a minimal, or classic skin to make yahoo run faster
- For some reason, Yahoo 5, 6, 7, 8 all load & exit MUCH faster than yahoo 9…. sometimes it feels like 9 is going to lock up the pc, or even crash just by opening or closing it! Once loaded, performace is moderate, but not fast
- A lot of webcams, such as Creative series, do NOT work under XP SP2 with yahoo, even though they work fine in XP without SP2, & work fine in other messengers like msn

I’ve found tons and tons of flaws! The plug-ins gallery won’t load (it’s just a blank, white box), the chat list won’t load (categories will, rooms will not), if any plug-ins had been closed, they CAN NOT be brought back (Yahoo! Music LAUNCHcast Radio), you CAN NOT download and install Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 plug-ins (the installations constantly fail). Are there ANY plans at all of fixing this? I’ve been complaining for months now and absolutely nothing has been done!

I tried finding a solution on another Yahoo blog but had no results so will try here. I’m using 9.0 and have a couple of concerns. It does, in fact, load very slowly compared to the 8.0 versions. When my contacts are shown as “offline” some profile pics are gone with only the grey smiley face and some profile pics are there, but shaded. All these contacts are supposedly offline. Why are some pics shaded and some offline with just a grey smiley box? I’m very curious to know why this is. Thanks!!

Everytime I try and shut my pc down when messenger 9 is running windows tells me a program is running and I have to click end to close messenger so windows can finish shutting down. I am using windows xp 32bit with service pack 3.

Hi Paquita,
To create groups in your Messenger list, go to the Contacts menu at the top and select “Manage Groups”. In that menu, select “Create New Group…”. Enter the name of the group and click OK. The group name will then appear in your Messenger list. Once your groups are created, you can drag and drop friends right in your list into the new group.

I have double checked to make certain that I am on the current version of 9, but the issue of Yahoo preventing the machine from shutting down still remains. Several times, I have found it necessary to kill the process. Is there a fix for this?

Hello,
Three years passed since I used Yahoo Messenger last and how different it is from what I expected it to be!
1/ There’s no search engine so how is one supposed to find new people to talk to?
2/ There’s the chat room service but I’m sorry to say that it sucks. No matter which chat room I get into, at least half of the users are bots offering me to watch them stripping on cam (not interested). Who’s running it anyway? Who’s supposed to keep chat rooms in order? Apparently these people, if there are any, are neglecting their duties.
3/ Yahoo Messenger used to be such a colorful, interesting place but now it’s dull and there’s absolutely nothing to do there. It’s like a kindergarten without toys. Total boredom.
Please, bring back the old, good Yahoo Messenger!

Can someone please explain to me why contacts in yahoo messenger are STILL not sorted by online status after all these years? Is there a setting I’m missing? I hope so. This seems like such a fundamental feature of any IM app and I can’t understand this lapse on Yahoo’s part.
Yahoo Messenger seems very slow to advance into the future as do their competitors like Skype. Just take a look at the sub-par video conferencing experience Yahoo Messenger offers and you’ll get one HUGE example of what I’m referring to.
Yahoo Messenger developers are working NOT on developing Yahoo Messenger… rather, they’re working on developing my resolve to use a 3rd party IM client.

You can hide offline contacts from your friends list which helps a lot. Use the command Ctrl+h when you have the Messenger list in focus. Or go to the Contacts menu, and click on “Show/Hide”.

I am unable to view my complete contact list since I installed yahoo messenger 9. I tried to go back to previous version to see if it worked but no luck. I used another computer and logged in from there to see if there is some problem with my profile but I found no problems there. So there is got to be something on problem with yahoo messenger which corrupts some file on my computer.

Hi flip2erna86,
You can remove a group from your list but you need to make sure it’s empty first. So either remove the contacts within it or move them to another group. Once the group is empty, right click on the group name and select “Delete Group”.
You can also right click on an existing group to rename it as well.

Hi, I have the 8.1 version still, but the issue that I am having is that I have 4 Groups total. In the Friends Group it shows that I have 20 friends in this group, I only count 18. How is that possible? And how do I find out whom I am not seing! What do I do about it? Thanks alot!

I have same problem with Liza’s. All I did was invited myself to my own friend list because my friend informed me that I was elected as a power user and I wanted to see it by myself so she said to invite my own ID to my friend list so I can see the crown.
After adding my own ID, nothing happened even after accepting the request so I restarted yahoo messenger. That’s when I lost all of my friend list, save for my own ID showing up online. The rest were only saved on my address list and appearing offline, personalized folders gone as well..

I had trouble with the IM phone out not working, drove me nuts, read by someone to do a “CLEAN” uninstall, –
then download again and save,
close all browsers,
then you must shut off all security, Spybot, Antivirus and if running Vista (which if you’re having trouble, you probably are) turn off the firewall..
Idid and now it’s all perfect! they should tell us that it’s all the security that prevents clean install!!

A contact named deshik_22 keeps showing up on my contact list, have no idea who this is or where they come from. Each time I delete it shows up again. Put them in the ignore list, and when I shut dn and log on again there that name is again. If I cannot resolve this I am suggesting to my friends we switch messinger service. Read and tried all the topics on this subject but no joy.

Have the same issue with the last people here as well. I added myself and all of my contacts disappeared and are now just in the adress book. But i can not import them either since i get an error which tells me to try again in a few hours. If anyone finds out how to fix this pls post and let us all know.

After requesting myself to be my friend on yahoo messenger it didnt work so I signed onto my yahoo messenger and ALL my contacts were deleted just the contacts they were still in the address book, and now I can’t add them it just wont work. Also every time i sign on it asks me If I want to be my friend. (like myself be my friend) its weird and doesnt matter if I click yes or no after I sign back in it asks me again if I want to be my friend and my contacts are gone again! Please help me!

since January 2009 all my contact have dissapeared from my address book. Everytime I try to either re-enter new contacts or try to retrieve, it tells me to come back in ten minutes. It certainly has been a long tem minutes since January. I have written to yahoo on two occassions but received no response.

I’m having a display image issue. Everytime I change it, it shows up in the My Display Image window, but when I hit OK, the display image remains the same as how it was before, and it remains the same in my IM windows. Furthermore, my contacts can see the new image, but I can’t! The only way to change it on my end is if I restart the computer. I’ve also uninstalled/reinstalled countless times, to no avail. I suppose it’s a more minor issue, but it’s still rather frustrating. Please help!

All of my contacts are gone, and when I opened it I had several off line messages, Yahell IM crashed and everything is gone, no contacts, no off lines messages, nothing at all? I went into my my IM files on the PC, and the one machine I upgraded to 9.0 it removed my archive, and is just now an empty folder? What gives you the right to remove them from my P.C.? I had them saved for a reason, and once it is on my PC, I own it. Get them back, or deal with me calling my state Attorney General to file a formal complaint. JR

Hi Please Help Me! My question is about the Crown symbol also. I asked a friend why she had it and what is was. She told me it was an option she was given as soon as she downloaded & installed the new yahoo messenger. She said the setting screen popped up on her first time opening YM, she chose to use the crown and its been there ever since. I downloaded the new messenger just for this feature & I did not get the pop up screen and/or option for a crown. I uninstalled & deleted yahoo messenger and tried the process again 3 times. I still have no crown.
I have never contributed so much of my time to something so silly as to looking for an answer on how to get this crown. BUT my yahoo id is & has always been kween_uf_krunk10 so I feel with a name like Kween, I’ve got to have my crown lol.
If anyone knows how to get this thing pleassse let me know! Much Appriciated!

Hi Again so soon all! I found an answer to my question. I hope this will explain THE ELUSIVE CROWN for Linda and anyone else enquiring. Forwarned the answer is a bit of a bummer.
What’s the little crown I’m seeing next to a person’s name in my Contact List?
The crown (or one of the other select new icons) means that your contact is a Yahoo! Messenger Power User.
Based on all the IMing they do, all the friends they keep up with, and all the features of Yahoo! Messenger they use, they’re in our top 5% of users.
We wanted to extend a “thanks” (and some rewards) for getting so much out of Messenger. So what you’re seeing is just one of the exclusive benefits Power Users get to enjoy.
If you’re interested in becoming a Power User, just keep using Yahoo! Messenger! Every so often we take a look at who’s rising to the occasion, and we add more Power Users to the program.

I’m having a display image issue. Everytime I change it, it shows up in the My Display Image window, but when I hit OK, the display image remains the same as how it was before, and it remains the same in my IM windows. Furthermore, my contacts can see the new image, but I can’t! The only way to change it on my end is if I restart the computer. I’ve also uninstalled/reinstalled countless times, to no avail. I suppose it’s a more minor issue, but it’s still rather frustrating. Please help!

hi when i try to add detail to a buddy i get “the last address operation did not succeed due to server error -40402 i have the latest version of yahoo messenger what should i do reinstall and if i do should i uninstall first but then i might lose all my contact info ya?

i have a problem with messenger 9.0. His not showing my avatar pictures. i have deleted the pictures from my account, i’ve installed the program again…nothing. I really don,t know why?? when my friends log on to my computers their avatar pictures are OK…only when i log on …NO picture….Please advise me what to do! Please!

I had login again, I am not able to see any contacts. The area where the contacts list (and groups) for chat is shown remains completly white (blank). I tried several options from the prefrences, though it is nothing to do with it. My friends are online, and on the webmessenger they are visible.
Please let me know if a solution is available immediately

OH MY GOSH! my List is completely BLANK! HELP PLS!
Awhile ago i open my YM then it’s fine, then my pc says i got corrupted file then i dowload YM9 and when i opened it my list is ALL GONE!!!

everytime i add a contact “your request to add a contact has taken longer than expected to complete” and then the person i want to add wasnt there. even i log out my ym and wait to login back.. what are the possible solution for this?? pls help..

My doubt is that in 8.1 version which is installed in my old laptop i can still see few local rooms. At the same time, the number of room options are quite less and local in nature. At the same time, i can see less local rooms in d new version 9.0 installed in my present comp. At the same time 9.0 version has more options. Why is this soo?? Also, is there any option if I can have both Local as well as Global rooms. Please comment

I’m using yahoo messenger 9.0.0.2152, Just I deleted some empty groups in my messenger list and got successfully deleted. But once I logged out and logged in again, the deleted groups are appearing again in my messenger. I made one hour of work, by segregating all the contacts in to different new groups. But all my work gone waste. I did three times, I was experiencing the same problem.
Please let me know, how to delete the groups permanently after moving the contacts in to some other groups. Thanks in advance. Regards, Govardhan.

I also have the problem where I can’t add any more contacts. I get a limit warning on the number of groups but not contacts, when I try to add a new contact. Also if I try to move a user from one group to a new group, it won’t move it stays in the old group, with no error? Any answer on this yet, I wish I could go back to the old version.

Hi Sarah – Contact lists – missing contacts -Advice
1) Do not add your own name to your list or you will lose all your other contacts
2) To show contacts > Contacts > show/hide – check all 3
2 )To show/hide offline contacts – Open messenger – left click on page – Ctrl + H ( together )
3) To revert – left click page – Ctrl +H ( together )
Please ask the software boys about this fix – seems to work
1.Exit Yahoo Messenger
2.Start\Computer\ Local Disk (C)\Program Files\Yahoo!\ Messenger
3.Delete the file called emptygrps.[your messenger id].ini,
4.Log back in again

Why was the love/hate buttons removed from the music launchcast in messenger?Now I have to listen to crap I don’t like.If they would come back I would listen to it again but for now I have other means besides Yahoo music launchcast.What was the reasoning behind them being removed?

so far, every single problem that i have read on this blog, aside one or two issues, are perfectly fixable on Version 9 through Version 9. Learn how to work a computer and realize that everything changes. No program is perfect to every user. Change is life. get with the times. get use to it.

I not being able to add Messenger List from other Yahoo users. “Contacts sent” is being shown on the users IM, but I m receiving none. Whereas, when I send my Messenger List, it is easily accessible to them. I’ve tried uninstalling and then again installing, but to no avail.

Hi Sarah. A Yahoo! user for 10 years, now on a new computer I have installed version 8.0 for Chat and Messenger. In the Chatrooms, the text/font in the Users List on the right hand size AND the Categories list is much smaller than it used to be. The same thing has happpened with the sub-sections when I click on Messenger, or Contacts, or Actions or Help. Is it possible to increase the font size for someone who is having a little difficulty with their eyesight? Many thanks.

the display image (picture or avatar) in the yahoo messenger i have are on the left side of the name. but yours are in the right side.

I’m running yahoo messenger 9.0 and having serious issues. My whole yahoo is blank. i can’t IM, recieve IMs or anything. I’ve uninstalled, reinstalled, signed in and out numerous times and it still doesn’t work. I’m getting tired of this because yahoo is how i talk to my boyfriend who is in college now. Since i’ve downloaded yahoo messenger 9.0 on my laptop am not able to sign in…got the same problem when i go to the web yahoo messenger…they tell me to answer the safety/security questions and continue but when i do so then they tell me that i’ve already done that…so i’ve tried to delete the messenger but it won’t let me delete the file.When i use my gfr’s laptop there isn’t any problem to sign in using my id and password.

Hello. I wanted to know why I can’t move most of my contacts to other groups. When I log off then log in again, most of the contacts I moved go back to the old group while some stay in the new group. My “Others” group also keeps disappearing everytime I log in again and my deleted groups reappear. Why is this happening? Please reply to my e-mail.

Hi:
Been using Yahoo Messinger for years and just love it.
The trouble all started today. First of all I was texting a friend, but after I typed my text and clicked on SEND (or Enter) it wouldn’t go to him. It just FROZE up the Messenger, then logged me out. Tried several times and the same thing happened.
I then went to SYSTEM RESTORE and backdated it by two days to try to fix the problem.
Now my Contact List is completely empty, not one name on there. I tried adding a name to it but it tells me that name is already on my list.
I therefore cannot access any of my friends now.
I deleted the program, then downloaded it again but the same thing happens.
I can however chat on my Yahoo e-mail page, but I don’t like that way. I can’t Photoshare or enlarge or color my text, or send a file.

@Brenda – Are you referring to your friends page that is on http://profiles.yahoo.com? If so, note that the friends you have there and the friends in your Yahoo! Messenger list are not necessarily the same. The two types of relationships also have different display images. What you choose in Messenger will not show up in Profiles and vice versa. Hope that helps,
