Changing skins in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0

April 1, 2008 on 10:16 am | In 9.0 version, Features |

Our 9.0 version contains a whole new family of skins you can choose from to jazz up your IM window.

When you choose a new skin it changes the design of the headers of your contact list as well as your IM conversation window (and adds some accents in other areas).

To change your skin in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, click the gold dot up near the top of the contact list window. It’s located near the minimize / mazimize / close buttons. Once the skin menu appears, hover your mouse on a skin to view it, then click to select it.

There are currently seven skins to choose from in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 including graffiti, green fantasia, icy blue and violet flame.

  1. LOVE THE SKIN COLORS!!

    Comment by Amanda Quinn — April 1, 2008 #

  2. OMG, all those skin colors are perfect for when you are chatting, and when you are not in the best mood possible. When I change the skin, it feels so cool and makes me feel better, because I can express myself more.

  3. those skins are sick

  4. WOW. ^_^ Wait for a minute I thought there were more added. You guys should add a black one ^_^ I’d download 9.0 if there was a black skin there. If I was making the skin (which I have NO IDEA HOW to make one) I’d make one that was pearl black with pearl gray flames or stripes, I don’t know what the background highlights are called.

    Anyone agree? Black skin….

  5. yea… black skin would be cool

    Comment by ariady — April 1, 2008 #

  6. I DEFINATELY think the black skin would be perfect, I was just thinking the same thing actually when I was looking at the skins. I think the skins that are available now are great, but too colorful, I think we need some neutrality. Anyone agree?

  18. Lovely feature. Just what messenger needs. A nice new wrapper to cover up the never ending and continuously worsening function of the program. It may not work worth a darn, but it looks pretty! GREAT way to spend company time.

  22. Sounds good, (this coming from a formerly dedicated but slowly converting 5.6 user ), but will there ever be an option to just use the default Windows skin? (like you can in 8.1 now)

    Comment by Cliff S — April 4, 2008 #

  23. Oh, I forgot to ask this! Will we be able to make our OWN skins? Now THAT would be cool

    Comment by Cliff S — April 4, 2008 #

  24. well its cool enough but the skins are all bright and too ache to my eyes and my friends. cn you have a seasonal skins to offered to your subscrbr?

  26. Hmm I just joined today, gotta love the skins and the 9.0 yim

    Comment by Tamara — April 4, 2008 #

  27. Oh by the way, how about customizable skins, where we can choose a cedrrtain design to which ever color background available…like black and white polka dots, or red flames w/ yellow background…w/e just spilling out ideas

    Comment by Tamara — April 4, 2008 #

  28. Just make sure you include the classic skin, you will lose a lot of users to third party software alternatives if you do not include a native skin option. That is software design 101. Seriously guys…. come on.

    Comment by blarg — April 5, 2008 #

  29. I like the classic skin, but these are pretty cool too. Do let us make our own too!

    Comment by Cliff S — April 5, 2008 #

  30. Looking through the Y!IM directory, the skins for this are in /skins/, with alot of subfolders. Maybe someone can create an all black one using one of these as a template?

Sarah: Is this possible? If so, I see a whole new world of personalization for this

    Comment by Cliff S — April 5, 2008 #

  31. Hi everyone.

I found this blog on accident, and noticed some of you wanted a black skin for Yahoo Messenger 9.

Well, also on accident, I found a skin that somebody created. What luck, right?

    Hope this helps.

  34. I agree with the black skin notion. Green is my favorite color, and Im loving the green skin, but I would also like to be able to go with a black one 2. just to change it up every now and then. Or maybe you can do a green and black one, like a lime green highlight to a black background. That would be sexy

    Comment by Reason — April 7, 2008 #

  35. yahoo is being racist for not including a black skin and a white skin…

    Comment by Josh — April 8, 2008 #

  36. omg this is awesome! i getto change my color to suite my mood. ohh have to check out the site that tyler posted to see whats there. thanks for for giving us an update on the new 9.0. looking forward to having more fun with my yahoo!

    Comment by peggy — April 9, 2008 #

  37. Why is only the top being styled? Can’t there be something done with the background of the rest of the client? I mentioned this when v9 beta first came out. If your going to spend the time to make the styled headers why not make a background color or something less bland to accompany it..

But dont get me wrong the headers are great..

  38. i dont even have the option 2 change the skin. there is no gold dot. can anyone help?

  46. i think that it would be really great if i could download more skins for yahoo messenger 9.0, im getting a little bored of these ones, i think a red one and a bronze one would be nice

  47. I am all about customizing my tools… I like to modify them to suit my needs, and moods. I love almost everything about the new Yahoo Messenger - my biggest disappointment is with the limitation in skins. In previous versions, there was an enormous amount of skins available from third-party developers - there are none for 9.0… I’m limited to only seven skins that come with the program

  55. I would TOTALLY love to be able to make my own skin. I like to coordinate my desktop background and my skins and not all the colors are covered. Making my own skin would ROCK!!!

  56. ok skins are great but in the days of custom everything almost on the net why cant it be easy for us to make just the right skins for us . aol has been like that from a long time and even aim is like that so why cant yahoo be that way?? i want to show my friends me and useing a display image doesnt alway do me justice come on more feature for customization PLEASE

    Comment by Jessi — July 1, 2008 #

  57. I was looking for a way to add new skins to the 9.0 also. The new ones are really neat but I agree with the making of your own skins. It would be great if we could use our own pics, colors, layout of our friends list. There are some items I use and some I don’t, such as my address book being under my list of friends. I want to be able to show/hide that and the ads at the bottom, they can be pretty annoying when you accidently hover over them with your mouse. It gets in the way. I do love my yahoo messenger, for those who scrutinize it, don’t use it. In my opinion it’s way better than MSN, Windows, AIM and ICQ.

  58. I downloaded and installed the black version listen above by the person that created it. I have to say, I was about to uninstall this version, until I went to black. It is beautiful and elegant. I think one of yahoo’s problems is, they are still making everything in pastels and pansy looking. Who wants that forever… I mean.. the world has proven, time and time again, that fads come and go… Yahoo, Prove to us that you don’t just want to be a fad.. Listen to your users! Don’t stay pastel, as if you were still in the infant stage, you have grown up, and us, with you… Show the maturity in your products….. Yahoo really can be elegant too!
