Now hear this: Mac version has voice
March 25, 2008 on 3:47 pm | In News |
We know you’ve waited a long time for this… The new version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac Beta now has voice calling!
With this new version, you can make free PC-to-PC calls or sign up for a Phone Out account to make calls from your Mac to regular or mobile phones worldwide for as low as 1¢ a minute (see rates). And if you want friends to be able to call you on your Mac from any phone, sign up for a Phone In account and choose a number.
Download Yahoo! Messenger for Mac Beta
Now that our Mac version has voice, users can also enjoy two other handy features: free voicemail and call forwarding. If you’re away from your Mac or signed out of Yahoo! Messenger, friends can leave you a voicemail which is then delivered as an email attachment to an address of your choice.
If you want to make sure you don’t miss any calls, use the call forwarding feature to immediately send incoming calls to any regular or mobile phone number. Note that you do need a Phone Out account to use call forwarding.
There is also a new Voice & Calls section in the preferences menu. From there you can set what email address should receive your voicemails, what number your calls should get forwarded to, and handy things like whether or not you want iTunes to pause when a call comes in.
You’ll find the voice features in a new “Voice & SMS” button in your IM window. From there you can start a call, or send a free SMS (text) message to a friend’s mobile phone (note that your friend may be charged for receiving your SMS message depending on their mobile phone data plan).
The main contact list window also has a button near the bottom that opens up a dial pad. This is handy if you have a number you need to call that’s not associated with a contact.
Check out this short screencast to see how the new voice features work:
If you’re curious about the voice features but aren’t ready to sign up for a Phone Out account (or don’t have a friend you can call for free on PC-to-PC), try the “Make a free test call” button in the Voice preferences menu. During the free call you can record and playback your voice to check out the quality.
We really want your feedback on this new version, so after you’ve had some time to try it, please visit our feedback page to let us know what you like and don’t like.
On your mark, get set…start talking!

I just now downloaded what is purported to be 3.0b3 build 98855.
It is NOT that build number, it is 3.0b3 build 98006, as revealed by a ‘Get Info’ command issued against the downloaded application.
Good work, you idiots.

Re: Comment by Joe Neaubaudie…
Calling someone an idiot over a damn build number is just stupid. Perhaps you are the idiot. Christ, only Mac users would be this picky. Ok, most Mac users. I don’t care what the build number is as long as it works. Get a life and quit drinking the Kool-Aid.

voice in chat is not possible and will never be done. yahoo doesnt want to pay to license the truevoice codec for distribution with client. voice was possible with windows because ms licsensed the codec. however ms didnt want to relicense it to be included with vista. Although its still free to download for vista fortunately. Unfortunely there is no free mac port to download. Yahoo would have to license it and provide their own mac port of codec on top of it. just never gonna happen. Ever. the call feature uses another codec than chat which yahoo has licensed so thats why that was possible but thats it.
so whats left to complain about? the long list of outstanding bug reports.

If you’re smart, Yahoo!, and I know you aren’t, you’ll make this open for alternative clients. Sure, I know you want people to use Yahoo! Messenger, and the way to do that is to help people who actually like it to talk to people who don’t (like Adium users). If I can’t talk to a friend of mine because he prefers Adium or Pidgin, then what reason do I have to run Yahoo! Messenger if I can’t use the extended features?
Google’s making the voice part of Google Talk open, and Yahoo’d be dumb not to do the same. But I expect that to be the situation.

This is a giant step forward on the Mac side. The voice quality is pretty good on this also.
A couple issues however. I couldn’t call out to another messenger user, so I had to have someone call in to try this. Second, I was disconnected on just my end once, and the person I was talking to also had it happen where they could hear me but I couldn’t hear them.
Nonetheless, thank you for your effort on this, it’s appreciated.

A follow up. The message part works, but nothing on the voice works on MAC at all. I tried it on 2 diffrent MAc’s and it is the same nothing works, When I use my windows on MAC and use the windows version it works fine. I can use the windows version to call into mac and the mac rings but you can not answer it as the buttons will not work. Yahoo needs to get this right, we have waited for so long and it will not work. I tried a test call on both and no luck it will not even work. But the message part works fine, any Idea’s.

Mac Users, if you are having problems, submit feedback with as much detail as you can so the engineers can track down the issue and fix it quickly. You can imagine that every mac is slightly different (different RAM, applications, OS version, etc). As a result there will be some bugs for a small number of people. Forums aren’t the place for it. Use the feedback form and submit your info:

Hi, Ive recetly got myself a Mac and have downloaded the messenger Version 3.0 beta 2 (build 78326) for my mac. however, upon installing it and signing in i repeatedly get this message that “The Application could not connect to the Messenger Servers. The Servers may be busy, Please try again”. Ive done this a couple of times now and im unsuccessful yet. I removed yahoo from my system and reinstalled it couple of times and still the same result when logging in.
Im running it on Mac OS X Leopard Version 10.5.2. Anyone can please assist me? Its been 4 days since im on this and no progress.
Further to my above on 23rd March, when tried again i still got the same error message “Application counld not connect….. etc” and Yahoo Msgr prompted me that a new version of Yahoo Mesenger is available now and if that I would like to Innsall it by replacing the old version. Now version 3 (beta 3) (build 98855) is Installed on my mac, but the progress on it remains the same. Cannot log in….
Can someone help…

Voice does not work for me. In the preference setting I select the input device to my USB mic (which works in my other applications) but the setting won’t stay. Input setting keeps going back to the built-in mic jack which I have no mic for. Hopefully they will correct this soon. I sent them feedback.

Good job guys! Congrats on a new release.
Quick question though: I can’t find a way to get rid of / edit the icon set for the ‘toolbar’ at the bottom of the Messenger List, is there one? It looks pretty messy down there, especially as I prefer to use keyboard shortcuts rather than icons.
Is there a way to edit it that I’m missing? If not, will there be? I’m sure you’re aware that it’s pretty much universal to be able to edit toolbars in Mac applications.

Harsha, try going into your preferences (for YM) and under connections click on the other option you are given there. In other words, if you are using the “default” method try using the “Behind Firewall” method, or vice versa.
And Shadu, yes, SMS international numbers work fine…

For all u guys who have problem connecting with this Messenger version:
seems like the app is unable to properly process the Avatar; so if u have set an avatar, you may seem the following symptoms (I know I did): the friend list window shows up the connecting spinner, but nothing seems to happen - the menus and everything look as if u’re not connected. But u are, and are able to receive and send messages.
The solution I found was to go to avatars.yahoo.com and DELETE my avatar. Now I’m able to log in and use the Beta 3 version properly..

Stealth Settings Error? is a major bug, the only response someone got from Yahoo answers was that this is beta so its not supported.
Comment by Ron — March 30, 2008 #
1. The 3.0b3 build 98855 which I downloaded (4X) has no voice setting except as a grey area lower right, so it doesn’t work. I registered (put in my $25) and wasted 3 cents trying to get voice to work. Note that “Add contact” has no spot for a phone number, so that version is obviously not “voice friendly”. I have MAC version 10.4.11 with a processor: 500 MHz PowerPC G4. What gives?
2. I also set the audio to my Plantronics headset which switches back to Built in Audio after turning Preferences off.
3. Can I have my $25 back?
Comment by Shirley Miller — March 30, 2008 #
If you don’t see the Voice & Calls button in your toolbar you probably configured your toolbar and removed it. You should hit the configure button on the window and put it back.
Downloading the client repeatedly isn’t likely to get you a different client, just the same one over and over again.
As to your headphones not working, are you sure the headphones work properly? The preference should work fine once set.
If you want your money back you’ll need to contact the customer service number on voice.yahoo.com

Karl: Thank you for your offered assistance, however:
1. I use Safari for which yahoo doesn’t have a toolbar. I will check out Explorer; “nonamethx — March 26, 2008″ said that he could not use or edit the ‘toolbar’ at the bottom of the Messenger list as neither could I;
2. I admitted downloading Messenger X4 searching for yahoo voice which doesn’t appear to exist as a separate application;
3. My husband has used my Plantronics headset for two years quite properly. If you look back, another blogger also had this problem;
4. My comment about the $25 was rhetorical. I hope to find out just how you were so pleased with your application copy.
Comment by Shirley — March 30, 2008 #
The Toolbar I’m referring to is the one in Yahoo Messenger on top of the conversation window. The row of icons below the window title in the screenshot that sarah posted, that is the toolbar. If you don’t see the “Voice & Calls” item in there then it’s possible that you removed it. If that’s the case then going to the View Menu and selecting customize toolbar will provide you with a sheet that slides out of the conversation window and allows you to drag the item back into the toolbar.
The headset you describe should work fine since all USB headsets should work fine, same with Bluetooth, and analog headsets.
Comment by Karl — March 30, 2008 #
hello.
1. you should include Photo Sharing and key shortcuts. for example windows users have the option of CTRL+F to expand the window to the whole user list, or to restrict it only to see the online ones. i searched google to see if such options are on mac version. unfortunatley, no.
2. include please the “Allow yahoo websites to show me online”.
3. there is a problem with the Stealth settings. yes sure, i can signin as invisible and set myself online just to Larry. but if i change my status to: Busy, then i get automaticly online to all the list. in windows if you do that only Larry sees your status only, on mac version instead, changing the status while only one user can see you online makes you available to the whole list. not good.
4. i dont know what other users think about the webcam feature, but i have a brand new imac 24 inch with isight and when i invite a windows user to view my webcam it just keeps staying on @Connecting@ screen to him.
5. i hope that step by step you’ll be able to port all the remaining options from the windows version. why ? well you did a great job with this version it look great, it’s stable ( haven’t got any error with it yet ). i would hate to see it stuck like this for another 1-2 years. just do what you have to do and offer mac users the same options that ms users have.
Comment by Tosa Claudiu — March 31, 2008 #
1. Cmd-J Show/Hide Offline Contacts, it’s right there in the View Menu
2. This is the default behavior, if sites aren’t seeing you as online then please submit feedback at http://feedback.help.yahoo.com/feedback.php?.src=MSNGRMAC&.done=http://messenger.yahoo.com/mac.php&.from=client.
3. Busy is not Invisible, that is not a bug.
4. Webcam servers are sometimes misbehaving, try again.
5. Any deficiencies you run into should be reported through the send feedback link, available at:

I am happy that Yahoo has at least owned up and added some sort of voice chat. Now, this isn’t the type of voice chat I have anticipated. I think a few of us would love to see a Voice Chat option for chat rooms. I already have Skype, and this new option for Yahoo does not really impress me.
If what the person before me said is true about licensing issues, then I will simply just take yahoo off my laptop. I do not use Yahoo Messenger for anything other than voice chatting with friends on chat rooms. I already have Skype to make calls, so this is pretty useless.
Comment by NotSatisfied — April 3, 2008 #
I thought this might be more like the windows version of mac with voice (such as voice conferences and/chat rooms) but no. my hopes were let down.
So far I don’t have as many crashes as I did on the previous version for mac, however I crash at the same time as my brother and dad when we are logged in on yahoo for mac - guess there is a server glitch every so often… just weird.

its not stable yet, it is really irritating,
