In the MIX with Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
March 6, 2008 on 9:00 pm | In Vista version | 23 Comments
This week, our Yahoo! Messenger for Vista team is at the Microsoft MIX conference in Las Vegas (March 5-7). The MIX conference is a chance for developers utilizing Microsoft platforms to discuss new ideas and technologies, as well as share what they’ve created. Last year our team hosted a couple of sessions on Windows Presentation Foundation and its integration with Yahoo! Messenger for Vista.
Great work is continuing on Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, and members of the team will be meeting with reporters and technologists at MIX to give them a preview of what’s coming up in the next Beta release. We wanted to make sure our readers and users got a sneak peek as well.
The key feature in the next Beta release will be voice, allowing users to make free PC-to-PC calls and low-cost PC-to-Phone calls right from their PC. And if you have a Phone In number, you will also be able to receive calls from your friends in Yahoo! Messenger for Vista.
As part of the voice feature, our designers have been working on some cool voice visualizations for the product that leverage the WPF 3D integration. So even if you’re not having a very interesting phone conversation, we guarantee you’ll be mesmerized by the awesome effects.
SMS (short message service) will also be part of this next release, allowing users to send text messages from Yahoo! Messenger for Vista to a friend’s mobile phone for free. We will also be adding Yahoo! Mail alerts to this next version due to the large amount of feedback we received from preview users. Yes, your feedback does make a difference!
While we don’t have a definitive release date for this next Beta version of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, we’ll keep you posted here on the blog. In the meantime, if you are running Windows Vista, please download and try out the preview version available at http://messenger.yahoo.com/vista. Visit our feedback form anytime to tell us what you like and don’t like about your experience. If you’d like to receive additional updates via email, please join the free Yahoo! Messenger for Vista group.

Senior Product Manager, Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
P.S. – If you’re interested in any of the sessions taking place at MIX, you can view them 24 hours after they happen at http://sessions.visitmix.com/.

Wow. Yahoo Messenger for Vista is actually alive and kicking. I really wasn’t expecting much from the project but now I’m beginning to believe in you guys.

As usual, my previous post was deleted. When will chat rooms be added? Why are chat rooms such a bad thing to want? Yahoo seems to want to be distancing itself from chat, which I consider a very valuable and useful service.

I hope you can turn the visualiser off. Looks horrendous.

Hi,
Yahoo Messenger for Vista looks Superb!!!. When it will be available? 1H or 2H of 2008. After looking the video preview, i feel that i want to use it right away.
Will this be available for XP users? as i pity them after seeing this GUI.
Thanks and waiting for the release.

I like the beta version of Y! Msgr for Vista. Is there a way to change the font on it though? I can’t find it and I think the default font on it is too block-ish for me.

Until chat is added, this is worthless to me.

i have already installed and uninstalled this YM for Vista a few number of times just to see if it would work for me this time around. The reason was, i cannot login to my account with YM for Vista but with the 8.1, I can login. What do you think is the problem? I am excited to use YM for Vista with my Vista OS. thanks!

I’ve been using Y!Messenger for Vista ever since the first public beta release and I didn’t have any problems. It is capable of chat unlike what others posted above. It may not feature chat rooms “YET” but you can still chat with your contacts.
Overall it’s really great specialy the MATRIX mode where all chat TABS are viewed at once.

Without chat rooms and voice support for vista, this is useless.

HEY!!
I love the new Windows Vista themed yahoo messenger. I like how all the conversations are in one window and how i can personalize basically EVERYTHING! The only thing I have a issue with is the fact that I cannot share my webcam using Messenger for Vista. It would be great if in the near future we would be able to access our webcams!
Great job with Messenger for Vista altogether!

The new Y! Mess. Vista looks good, works smooth, but….and here we go:
- Chat is no longer supported or even to be found
- Voice is not supported
- Menu is kinda empty
- Preferences is empty, I miss the settins for fonts, display image, colors, webcam and all that other stuff we used to have in 9.0 and earlier versions.
If ya’ll bring all that stuff back it is one heck of a messenger.
