Vista Performance Hotfix from Microsoft

January 25, 2008 on 1:56 pm | In Vista version | 12 Comments

If you’re using the new Yahoo! Messenger for Vista preview version, this latest Windows Vista Hotfix may be of interest to you. Recently, Microsoft released a Hotfix for the layered windows function in Windows Vista. This improves the response time of Vista applications when layered windows are being used.

In the case of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, this Hotfix improves the response times when you’re doing things like opening menus that overlay the main interface (like the options menu or skin chooser). According to the WPF team Program Manager blog, installing this Hotfix can improve Vista Layered Windows performance up to 4x (depending on your machine’s specifications).

This Hotfix is available on Microsoft.com through the links below. If you are already running Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Beta, this Hotfix is included and there is no need to download it again. If you prefer not to install individual hotfixes, the Layered Windows Hotfix will be included when the final SP1 release of Windows Vista is available.

Click below to get the Vista Layered Windows Hotfix:

Vista 64-bit users

If you’re unsure which version of Windows Vista you have, please use the 32-bit link. Note that you need administrator privileges to install this Hotfix, and a restart will be required after installation. If the Hotfix has already been applied to your machine, a “This update does not apply to your machine” message will appear during installation.

  1. ok… i just installed the Hotfix… actually i don’t see any bit of decrease in lag when maximizing… increasing size of contact list… entering in menus… same delay… so… please fix… i enjoy all the small fixes , refreshes… and such things… so please release stuff more often , for testing

  4. How about a hotfix to let people with the error “Yahoo.Messenger.YmAPP has stopped working” actually launch ?

    Comment by Michael — January 26, 2008 #

  5. Had a curious thing happen after installing the hotfix from MS. I restarted Windows and ran Y!M, and now there’s a great deal of graphical errors.

The alpha masks behind overlaid objects render incorrectly, often offset by about 10px to the right, making it appear that shadows are skewed, stretched, and often times in the wrong place. The color-picker control is completely broken.

Aside from that, the hotfix does, actually, improve performance of the app. I’m going to first try uninstalling and reinstalling Y!M. Failing that, I’ll remove the hotfix.

    Very strange!

  6. Have Vista. Was very happy w/Yahoo I.M. Not tech minded. Installed updates for Vista. All kinds of problems, since installation.
Said it before, and will say it again: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

  7. Can’t even get messenger to install on this computer with Vista. I’m not surprised though, Vista hasn’t played nice with ANY of my software. Wish I could get rid of it. I MISS MY XP!!!!!

  8. I agree with Carolyn’s comment above. Vista is no improvement, rather a setback. XP was much better. Sure wish I had it on my new computer.

  11. The Vista Yahoo app will not work unless all security is at lowest levels and Code integrity /PAE etc is not strictly enforced. Also forget Hardware DEP or nx AlwaysOn.
… Just put out a communicator YAHOO .. without all the hidden streams and digitally sign your product etc.. use the API’s instead f trying to circumvent them.
