Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Refresh

January 22, 2008 on 5:45 pm | In Vista version |

Take a deep breath…and smell the refresh! In response to user feedback and some issues we wanted to fix ourselves, a refreshed version of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Preview (2008.01.11.428) is now available. This latest version includes the following fixes and enhancements:

Performance & Stability improvements: We’ve improved overall responsiveness, including typing and switching between tabs and windows. In addition, we tackled some of the odd crashes that were occurring, so you should also find this version more stable overall.

A fresh look & feel for some areas: Attention all space-savers: now you can make the contact list even narrower. You’ll also find that some menus, like the display image picker, have been cleaned up and enhanced. Offline messages are more clearly displayed with a new “While you were out” tag and timestamp to denote the message. We also fixed a bug in the contact list so that when you choose to appear offline to a contact in your list, that contact’s name will become italicized (but remain bold).

Sidebar gadget reliability: We know some of you have had trouble loading and using the sidebar gadget that comes along with Yahoo! Messenger for Vista. We’ve made some changes that should make it possible now to drag and drop a contact into the sidebar if you’re on a 64-bit version of Vista. We also got rid of the red “X’ that sometimes appeared in place of a contact’s image.

Various bug fixes: We tackled a fix for some of the sign-in problems that have been reported from some users. We also fixed the bug where the message window wasn’t always scrolling down as the conversation progressed. And lastly, we fixed the contact list to maintain the open or close status of your groups between sessions. So if you open or close a group in your list and then sign out, the next time you sign in, it will appear the same way you left it.

Thanks in advance for installing this latest version and giving it a test drive. As always, please use our feedback form to let us know of any problems you encounter. We still have a lot of work to do but hope that these various fixes and enhancements make the Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Preview version even more enjoyable.

  1. Is it really worth redesigning the whole thing just for Vista? I like the way “Yahoo for XP” works already, why change it?

  3. It is great progress. Congratz! Could people using Mac (I use it) can have improvement on our Y!M, please? Therefore, we can the UI as good as the Vista version.

  4. Brilliant, much less.. jittery.

I don’t think you’ll see this version on XP, and not just for technical reasons. XP has 9, which still isn’t out of beta yet. By the end of 2008, a lot of people will be using Vista. Don’t kid yourself you won’t be, when XP came out I was like “I’m not using that, Windows2000 works perfectly!”. Vista has its problems, not saying it doesn’t, but no-where near the level of horror-story hysteria in the web-press. And works fine on my bought-in-2001 computer.

And if you seriously hate Vista, then buy a Mac, which has a nice Yahoo client too

  6. Now don’t get me wrong, bug fixes are good. But still… I’m not going to even think about trying Yahoo Messenger for Vista until it gets email notifications.

I would like to see new emoticons, but the interface is great. I like it the way it is.

The only problem is that it laggs a lot. That’s a problem in the latest version and it wasn’t there before.

  8. You may have fixed bugs but did you add any features to it? voice? email notification? sound settings? file transfer capability? The updates to messenger is nice but without any features to use or adjust its just a blank messenger. Give us options to select and adjust in the messenger. Do we have to wait another year for features.

  9. They didnt add any features to it…. Which I dont understand why. They just made it more stable and a new GUI to it? I dont get it? Whats new about the GUI from the other build am I missing something?

    Comment by Daniel — January 23, 2008 #

  10. I agree with some of the other posts here. Lack of features and it just being eye candy aren’t enough to make me switch to it yet. I like what I see - but in all honesty, this still needs a lot of work. If it took you a year and three months to get this far, I’d say you need to hire some new programmerS.

Not trying to flame, but you ask for feedback, here it is.

  11. I am glad they are working on stability before adding features, since adding features to an unstable base will make it harder to debug and fix existing bugs. That said, I really can’t test it fully until it at least has message archiving like version 8 and 9 does. Since I use Messenger to collaberate with friends, I need to keep a record of the conversation. I can’t put it to real use without the archive feature. It be convient if it either stores it in plain-text/HTML or if not that, then in the same binary format that you use for Messenger 8 or 9 so I can port the archives between the two.

  12. It is great and nice looking but when i’m using my mobile phone as modem to log-in YM for vista it always logout. Does the YM for Vista has poor connectivity using mobile phone modem?

Or sometimes it’s hard to log-in, is it designed only using high band connectivity like broadband or it does not support mobile modem at all?

Good job Yahoo Messenger Vista Team, keep innovating so it will resolved some flaws in the program.

  13. Love this new build. Seems smoother, and more consistant as far as the UI goes. Glad you guys are choosing to increase stability and fix other bugs before adding new features. Can’t wait for this to get stable enough to move to the next new set of features.

For anyone else who’s having performance issues, try this new update to WPF(Windows Presentation Foundation) http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=938660

  15. Are you for real ? All the fixes except that it fails to launch STILL with the error “YMAPP failed”.

Why don’t you actually create an app that launches ? Or provide a list of error messages and fixes.

  20. Please, guys & gals, stop being so hard on the team. They’re trying their best to implement these changes and make the Yahoo experience that much more appealing and gratifying for everyone. Stop complaining and have patience as these updates roll out. You’re getting a nice application for free & you expect so much in so little time.

Chill out and thank them for their hard work.

    :-)

  21. I was very happy when I saw the new version of the Messenger for Vista. No problems on the downloading or the installing part. Every time I try to launch it I get the following message: “Yahoo.Messenger.YmAPP has stopped working”. Can anybody please help me? I also read the article from http://www.webtlk.com/2008/01/24/new-yahoo-messenger-for-vista-20080111428/ which says “The new Yahoo Messanger is out.” and “- Sign-in issue resolved.” Doesn’t look that way to me

  27. Thanks a million for the fix, that avatar thing where you change it, really cool it was a bit off before, and like they say “the devil is in the details.”

Much apreciate it. Just wish we could test drive video and voice already. Which I hope we will have soon, I am feeling alienated from my friends, and I’m not a big fan of the previous versions now that I got vista. So plllllllllllleasssssssssse get voice on this soon.

  29. This is the worse yahoo messenger yet! It would seem that as long as vista has been out that yahoo would be up to date by now. Other messenger programs work fine with vista so why is yahoo so slow on the process?

    Comment by jennifer — February 3, 2008 #

  31. Am not a techie, and the current version of Yahoo I.M. works fine on my Vista Basic. There are several versions of Vista, and while installing different programs on my Vista for a work at home job, the tech staff had much problems, not taking into account that there were several versions, and their frustration was evident. I had to keep telling me that their instructions did not match what I was seeing on the screen, don’t know which Vista they were using to create a user manual.
Yahoo messenger in current form works fine for me.

When I tried to use the new I.M. for Vista, it wrecked several things, and changed my computer, again not a techie, don’t know what it did other than make me spend time fixing it.

Old cliche: If it ain’t broke-don’t fix it.

  32. I like the new refresh, it fixed a lot of the problems I was having…would love to see more preference features though, (tired of redoing the text is doesn’t save like the other versions). But I can wait until all the bugs are fixed. The sound is choppy though I can barely hear when I get buzzed or sent a new message and it doesn’t always blink either. Becomes a problem went trying to multitask. Please keep up the good work it is coming a long nicely. Thank You

  34. After using version 8 on my XP Laptop, Messanger for Vista, and V 9.0 Beta, I have to say that my preference is V9 since I use many of its fatures including IMV (not avail on Vista), Webcam (not avail on Vista), and mail notifier (not avail on Vista). I have not encountered any issues with Vista on the 9.0 version.

  35. Can we make YM to use another thread than the main one while logging in? Ever since i knew YM, when you log in, the window is hanging. We all got it on startup and it makes out system startup real slow.

Also why cant we have the emoticons look like the web messenger or closer to the old ones. They dont have the same great expressions they used to.Also why dow e need them to pop out big right when they were typed? Can’t you see they just look too big.

    Comment by Dude — March 18, 2008 #

  37. For a company as well known as Yahoo this messenger for Vista is taking WAY WAY too long. I can see Yahoo invested big in this one!! Obviously showing signs of corporate maturity Yahoo doesn’t get it. Something the best IM and getting to that market faster DOES matter. Having 3 guys take 3 years to write this from scratch is pathetic.
A full featured version should be around by now. This is not some myspace wannabe basement start up - THIS IS YAHOO!! but the way the Vista IM is being slowly released over the course of YEARS and has no features shows exactly how vulnerable a mature company is to innovators. Unfortunatly this is a sign that Yahoo probably should just sell-out to MSFT and become part of that bloated maturing dinosaur.

  40. I love the new design look for Yahoo Messenger for Vista.

However, I too get the “Yahoo.Messenger.YmApp has stopped working” - but I am only getting that when I close Yahoo Messenger out.

Another problem I am having is that Yahoo Messenger will not store my password. I have it set to remember my password and to sign in automatically, but it never remembers my password.

Hopefully, these two issues will be fixed in an upcoming release.
