New file transfer security with Norton AntiVirus

January 17, 2008 on 9:32 am | In 9.0 version, Features |

Yahoo! Messenger is a great way to share files with friends instantly. With a simple drag and drop you can send photos, music, word docs, spreadsheets – virtually any kind of file up to 2GB in size.

But everyone fears receiving a file that contains a virus; they can lurk in files from even the closest of friends. So we’re happy to announce new, enhanced file transfer security as part of the partnership between Yahoo! Messenger and Symantec.

Yahoo! Messenger has teamed up with Symantec to provide automatic file scanning for users of Norton AntiVirus 2007/2008 and Norton Internet Security 2007/2008 (for Windows). If you have one of those products installed on your PC and are using the latest Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta, the files you receive from friends via IM are automatically scanned in the background. If there is a potential security risk with the file you’re receiving, Norton alerts you.

Norton is the first and currently the only security software to provide this level of automatic protection to users of Yahoo Messenger 9.0*. If you do not already have Norton installed on your PC, visit http://www.norton.com/YahooIM to get Norton Internet Security 2008 or Norton AntiVirus 2008.

*The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta (9.0.0.922) is required. If you’re not sure of your version number, go to the Help menu in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta and choose “About Yahoo! Messenger”. If needed, you can download the latest version at http://beta.messenger.yahoo.com.

  1. Any Decent Anti virus will scan all incoming file transfers no matter the program, it’s called active scanning.

MSN messenger already has the option to pick which scanner you want to initialize on completed file transfer.

Perhaps something you can look into implementing into Beta 9.0 as people with brains won’t use Norton.

    Choice is a marvelous thing!

  2. LMFAO norton could you give us an option to use a real av like nod32 i bet yahoos got a partnership with these now GOOD GOD! norton SUCKSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS it is a resource hog a waste of space lol

  3. I have to agree with the other two posters 100%. Any good AV will automatically scan after a completed transfer, and NOD32 or Kaspersky are about the best a person can get. Norton and McAfee are both horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE.

  4. Sorry, I’d rather the minimal risk of a virus, than the system hogging Norton. I know it’s not compulsary, but I wouldn’t advocate it. AVG is free, lightweight, and will pop up if you open a folder with a dodgy file in it.

Simple answer is: only allow files from people you know and trust. If a friend keeps sending you “amusing” Powerpoint presentations they found on the internet, don’t accept them.

  7. Enhanced integration with Norton is great and all, but what about the rest of us who don’t use Norton?

Sure our anti-virus software does have active file scanning. However, depending on the product and how it’s set up, an on-demand scan of a file is often a bit more thorough than one performed on-access.

How about (re)adding the option to execute the user’s scanner of choice along with the appropriate switches as soon as the file finishes transferring, like what WAS available in Yahoo! Messenger 5.x and 6.0 and is in MSN / Windows Live Messenger? It seems like a rather simple solution to be honest. If a Anti-Virus vendor wanted to make sure a file transferred through messenger was thoroughly scanned, all their software would have to do is change the Yahoo! Messenger registry entry for this option to assure their scanner was executed when it needed to be.

you clearly have never ever sent a file over yahoo a 2gb file would prob take 10 hours LOL and thats both on fast dsl yahoos servers are slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww now icq thats excellent for sending files

  9. I have to agree with the previous posts. Norton is not a good choice for yahoo to use. In the past Norton has allowed several viruses to slip by and trash my system….AVG is the best on the market.

  10. It don’t really matter which is best, as this is not a post about who’s daddy is bigger than the other daddy.

It’s more about people actually given the choice of whatever scanner they choose to use and yahoo allowing you the user to pick that scanner.

Only going with norton smells of corporate unfair play.

  18. Hi -

I have Norton antivirus 2008 that I installed in march. Windows xp sp2 (I had installed sp3 but went back to 2) My computer has almost grinded to a halt. The norton icon has disappeared off the toolbar on bottom and I can not open Norton at all. It locks the computer up and about 10 minutes later I get an error message that symantec has failed and has to shut down. What can I do to fix this?
