A look back at 2007
December 31, 2007 on 12:00 pm | In News | 30 Comments
It’s that time of year where we’re inundated with “year in review” stories. So I thought I’d follow suit here on the blog and take a look back at 2007, the busiest year on record for Yahoo! Messenger.
New & improved
2007 was a year of “new & improved” for Messenger. Our classic Yahoo! Messenger for Windows version reached its pre-adolescent age of 9.0, complete with a facelift and slick video sharing features. Even our Mac OSX users felt the love this year with a couple of updates to Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 (hello chat rooms!). And let’s not forget the Yahoo! Messenger for Vista preview which after a year-long wait, was a welcome arrival.
Where can’t I IM from?
Thanks to the introduction of Yahoo! Messenger for the Web, now we have users all over the world signing in to IM from all kinds of different places. Whether you’re on the road, borrowing a friend’s PC, using My Yahoo! Beta, or even flying high on JetBlue, you can now IM and SMS your friends from any computer, no download required. Luke, Leia and Darth Vader even got in on the action with the Star Wars edition of Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.
Even if you’re away from a PC, IM is still within reach. A new version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mobile was released and Blackberry users can now enjoy what is easily the best mobile experience for Yahoo! Messenger.
Emoticons galore
“We love emoticons, they love emoticons, we need more emoticons” is like a playground chant around the Yahoo! Messenger office. 2007 was a great year for the little smiling guys. The emoticon turned 25 this year so it was appropriate that his anniversary resulted in the most emoting we’ve seen in a long while!
Thanks to our users and their creative ideas, we added some new ones in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. We also saw advances in the way emoticons are presented in Yahoo! Messenger. Our web products infused flash to give our emoticons a little more sizzle with their delivery, and in the Star Wars version, we even have galactic battles taking place between emoticons! Yahoo! Messenger for Vista followed suit, offering a new emoticon menu that is truly interactive.
And what would emoticons be without a little fanaticism? These users know how to make the most of our little guys.
I could go on and on about the busy year we had, but thankfully we have the blog complete with search box to archive all of our 2007 happenings.
Happy New Year to all of our readers! We hope you’ve enjoyed some of the new products, features and fun we’ve brought to you in 2007. We hope you have a great 2008 that’s filled with lots of friends, laughter and good times – all over IM of course.
Sarah Bacon & The Yahoo! Messenger team

Yeah, Yahoo has made several changes this year some I think was a good thing.
I would think that when yahoo re-opened the rooms they would have let all 100 stay open than to have it open only when one filled up there is a lot of people that had specific room numbers they stayed in and now well in the rooms I go to its a free for all. and most the time you have to put up with idiots, nasty talking people, or nasty looking names.
I guess Country music rooms are suppost to be like that. Hey Sarah why don’t ya come in a Country music rooms sometime its not a good thing for the most part.

Notice that one of the biggest things Yahoo did in 07 was to seriously overhaul chat, yet there is no mention at all about it in this “look back”?
I’d say that they are either embarassed about the lack of any real good done by this, or they just really could care less about their chat service now.
Either way, I’d say the future for Yahoo Chat is bleak.

Hey its me again…missing chat rooms are back but the rooms are empty or less than half that stated number. This happened awhile back…
Good luck and thanks for your hard work

Yes, strange how the monumental farce that was the Chat ‘improvements’ are not even mentioned! At one point EVERY yahoo chatroom was filled with bots, the CAPTCHA system was introduced and worked for a few hours before the scum behind the spambots got round it. Now we are back to where we were, bot infested rooms, woefully inadequate blocking facilities that leave users at the mercy of booters, and nonsensical Messenger functions such as ignoring all PMs means you also don’t see what’s being said in a room. And still there is NO acknowledgement of any chat problems, it beggars belief. If those responsible for Yahoo Chat took just 5 minutes to look through random rooms they could wipe out a good percentage of bots eg the emily_23 range.
But the Yahoo team just sticks it’s head in the sand and comes up with … yep more smilleys etc. The chat blog entries for August and Spetember generated a huge number of responses, far outweighing the other blog entries. You would think any forward thinking, customer focused company that is heavily into communications would take noticed of their users’ concerns, Having Yahoo even acknowledge there was a problem with their Chat service was a welcome step forward, but then to have silence on the subject is pretty pathetic.

Hi Sarah..
Not wishing to be disrespectful, when Messenger works, I love it, love it, love it… However, getting responses to the issues that come up, clearly need to be improved…
Recently losing voice server seems to be a big issue, over and over. Yet, when I reported the issue, I got a canned response from Chat regarding abuse, and how to ignore people in chat… Not even close to my question..
Brag on, you do have a nice product, when it works… but customer service needs improvement, as well as feedback to keep us posted.

I continue to be disappointed year after year that Sprint users can’t use Yahoo IM over SMS. People in undeveloped countries all over the world can use Yahoo IM via SMS. The mobile web version is useless, because you don’t even know someone has sent you a message unless you actively reload the page. I can use AIM over SMS, and the customers of other carriers can use YIM over SMS. Why is it disabled for Sprint customers?!

One question: why the hell don’t you make a “DECENT” yahoo mess version for Linux?I mean, your servers surely run linux, but there are also many users(like me) wich run linux. Why the f*** did you allied with Micro$$$oft?for $$$?Sincerely, you aren’t the company you used to be,and this is making your company image drastically going down.As Enrique Garcia noted, even the Mac Version s***s….why do you emphasize and love so much winblows?it’s not an OS,it’s an wannabeOS…please,Yahoo…don’t ignore this post, don’t ignore some 200 million linux users wich have to suffer only because they wanted a better OS,and plese Yahoo Think about this, you used to be a open-minded company….where is that open attitude?
also, please, concentrate on bugfixes and stop giving us crappy software with useless features, please
and for the last time: Please, think wisely!Think about the users, those who count, not the money!

I agree with many of the people here…Yahoo Messenger is Great—when it works. I’ve had problems connecting since before Christmas and I’ve sent several messages to tech support with detailed error messages…and I look here and they say that the problem is solved!! NOT!!! I still Can’t sign into my messenger client–you know, the one you download. The web based version is very very slow and is very very limited. I have nothing I can download that supports Video. The old was better than the new in my book.
Comment by Gloria — January 16, 2008 #
Why is it so hard for yahoo to keep the bots out of the rooms? In chatrooms hosted by another chat client there are no such things as bots. What’s up with that?
Comment by Tapper — January 21, 2008 #
9.0 sucks to be frank 8.1 was much better 9.0 while i respect it is in BETA stage it has sooooo many bugs it should never have been released you can’t even use the send file function or basic things like join chat with an alias or pm somone for that matter…. just terrible yahoo has gone downhill since the use rooms were removed never have i seen so little chatters in chat your user database and company’s reputation is SERIOUSLY going down in millions of peoples views it will bite you on the ass one day yahoo when your stocks plumit and you wonder why. treat people like fools you get treated like one you have it coming
Comment by Karl — January 29, 2008 #
O and also i find it amusing how you did not mention the CAPTCHA in your ‘improvements’ wonder why? BECAUSE IT DOES NOT WORK maybe yahoo rooms used to be emptied regularly watch this space folks bots will get/are so bad no one will get in chat LOL you do wonders for paltalk sales yahoo i will give you that!

This is a very typical note from the Yahoo “Messenger Team” (if there indeed is such a thing. My personal guess is that this Sarah Bacon character is another bot).
I use Yahoo Messenger every day. And as far as messengers go, I think it is one of the best available.
That said, the con’s do outweigh the pro’s. For one. there is no working customer service. when you write them, you only get the standard auto generated responses, saying the exact same thing no matter what issue you directed to them. The usual “we are very aware of the problem and the technical team is working on it” etc. Well guys, you must have hired a goup of mentally incapable monkeys, because the same technical problems are still here, as they were 2+ years ago. What ever happened to the profile picture loader? “The Edit Picture feature is temporarily unavailable. Please check again later.” Well I have been checking again later for a year now, but I suppose time is very relative to these people. If, ofcourse, there are any people at all!
The captcha log in feature is ofcourse a story unto itself. As I am writing this I am in a chatroom, with 21 bots on ignore. So much for captcha.
As I have said before in this forum, and as I will say again now – the yahoo chatrooms are utter useless crap and nothing particular has ever been done with it. Do you remember how LONG it took for yahoo to even get around to addressing the bot issue? It took years before they could even bother do the captcha thing. I wonder how long it will take this time? Yahoo isn’t exactly famous for admitting their own blunders.
The only real solution is to bring back user generated rooms, with the PalTalk options regarding moderators, password protection and room owners. Leave the bots can frolick all they like in the yahoo rooms, because those are a lost cause.
But as Yahoo has proven so many times, it is a company totally subordinate to it’s sponsors. And God forbid if a Pepsi advert should pop up in a user room dedicated to child abuse!
Seriously how hard can it be? Getting rid of the user rooms didn’t get rid of the perverts. Instead they are among us in all rooms.
Yahoo! You need some serious quality control.

Hi there this is kinda of off topic but I was wondering if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
