Status message length
October 4, 2007 on 11:34 am | In News | 45 Comments
Some of you have left comments about this issue in the last couple of days… There was a change made to the length of status messages that reduced the maximum characters to 40. It was an inadvertent change and we’re working now on rolling it back to what it was (250 character max). Thanks for your patience!

i knew i wasn’t going crazy.
you should make it 300 just for the trouble alone.

Yes, make it 300 characters for God’s sake! What’s the fun of it otherwise??? Restrictions on the messenger is the las kind of censorship we’d want or imagine… Free Internet now!
Comment by Irina — October 5, 2007 #
I’d make it 5 caracters long, just to annoy them

I really hope that it comes back to 250 soon.

Hi!
Who needs more than 39 chars anyway? Get a life! I suspect they reduced the number of chars to 39 because of security reasons (to avoid possible buffer overflows). I think that 39 chars status message is better than actually being stolen the account.
There are some security issues that have to be taken into consideration. Keep that in mind next time you have nonconstructive criticism.
I don’t know about other people but, to me, the chat works, voice and file transfer also works.
About chat rooms. Well, why don’t you personally do something about the bots in chat rooms? I know this is unortodox, but this has proven efficient.
I love Yahoo! and I used it for 10+ years now.

Thank you for fixing this issue.
(For those who still can’t create status messages longer than 40 characters, you have to restart Yahoo! Messenger for the fix to take effect.)
Comment by directrix — October 6, 2007 #
why did you reduce the lengh in the first place?
Comment by Jalane — October 6, 2007 #
And I thought I was the only one having this problem
Comment by Marguerite Jasmin — October 11, 2007 #
Although the length of the status mnessage is important it would be a lot more valuable to use ANY statuus message you wanted when in Stealth Mode.
To most people I might want to be invisible/off line. To my wife I might want to be “Waiting to talk to you” To My Boss “Hard at work, too busy to talk” etc.
Comment by Honduras Bob — October 16, 2007 #
I don’t see any difference to the status messages. It still the same lengh as before.I should be alble to see my whole status message not just half of it.
Comment by erica — October 22, 2007 #
Hello, how do you delete “New Status Messages” that you no longer use? For example, I have a status message that says that I am in Bali. Since I have returned, I no longer need that. How do you delete it forever?
Comment by Badri — October 23, 2007 #
Hi Badri,
Currently there is no way to remove status messages. As you create new ones, the older ones will disappear from the list of choices.

Dear Maam:
I’m having trouble regarding status message. I am able to type a long sentence — “To get up each morning with the resolve to be happy…is to set our own conditions to the events of each day. To do this is to condition circumstances instead of being conditioned by them.”
I don’t think it is more than the max characters of 250, however, my friends can’t see/view my status message. It’s just empty… Please help me a.s.a.p.
I’m very hopeful that you’ll respond immediately. Thank you so much Ms. Bacon in advance!
More power!
Best regards,
Bien

well the length is fixed all well and good…but now url lengths are limited. is this going to be fixed or are we stuck cramming only short urls in now?
Comment by Jessica — December 11, 2007 #
I cant set certain status messages. Like i cannot set “Im not here right now” though “Im not here right away” works! Yahoo messenger DOES accept the status, but it does not show it to others. The problem is described in details here: http://www.kalpiknigam.com/blog/2007/12/27/yahoo-censoring-status-messages/
Comment by Kalpik — December 27, 2007 #
Kalpik – Both of the status messages you described in your blog work just fine when I use them in Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 and 9.0.

Hi Sarah!
Did you type them out exactly the same way? Cause they do work even if you change the case. Just try copy pasting “Im not here right now”. Yahoo messenger takes it, but does not show it to your friends.
Thanks for your reply
Comment by Kalpik — December 28, 2007 #
“Im not here right now”. I dont think its do with what we type… Ok it happens today for an hour and then no Status. After I logout and if the versions are the same it seems to work… Just my thought

Hi,
Could you please tell me how can I create a link in my messenger status? I mean, let’s say, I put “Vacation” and by clicking on this word I’d like people to be linked to my online photo album.
Thanks

I have created a link in my status(just like in your blog), but it doens’t work! is it because my link is too long?
it’s something like http://family.webshots.com/photo/.. (and a 26 characters long id for the picture)
it displays the status in my YM, but it’s not shown to others (I have myself in my list) if I try something like
test http://www.test.com -> it works.
PLEASE tell me how can I fix this?
Comment by diana pop — February 19, 2008 #
Hi diana pop,
I tried a similar link in my status on Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 (http://family.webshots.com/photo/2077693960102753209tKBKRn) and it worked. Even if the link were longer than 250 characters, it would just cut off the link, not eliminate it.
What version of Yahoo! Messenger are you on (Mac, PC, Web)? Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

Hi Sara
My link is this (copy-pasted it)
http://family.webshots.com/album/562362512zLBREA irina
on YM 9.0, PC. I’m using Vista, but i also tried it on my XP professional and that doesn’t work either. (I have upgraded yesterday to 9.0 because i thought it could have been a bug on the 8.x)
I asked a friend to put on the same status and it didn’t work for her either.
so it’s not my computer.
thanks for your help
Comment by diana pop — February 20, 2008 #
Hi again diana pop,
Thanks for the additional info. I put in that link with irina at the end and it worked fine for me on 9.0. “irina” showed up in my status as a hyperlink and it clicked out to your photo page. Did you also try putting irina first, followed by the URL? That’s the standard way to insert a linked status (see http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2007/04/13/whats-your-status/).

hi sara
it’s sooooo frustrating! i tried again both ways, still no status change. i don’t understand though why other links work.
i tried other sites (a link to imdb.com – no www – works) or other random www URLs and they are fine. how can such strange behavior occur? but then i tried your webshot link too and that didn’t work either.
maybe it’s a location thing? users logging in from certain countries are not allowed certain status message links?
Comment by diana pop — February 21, 2008 #
Hi dianapop,
I think the issue is definitely where you place the text you want to be linked. Be sure to put it in front, e.g. “irina http://family.webshots.com/album/562362512zLBREA” and be sure there’s a space between irina and the URL. When I tried it the other way, it definitely didn’t work (friend didn’t see it).

tried it like you just said just now. still nothing.
it shows in my status bar as if it were ok, but in the list – nothing. of course i put a space, then i put many spaces. then i put even a new line (ctrl+enter) between them and nothing. there has to be a way, though. because other links work.
Comment by diana pop — February 22, 2008 #
PS: on version 8.1 on win xp i got it to show that status once, but then i had to unplug the network cable and when i got back online, the same status didn’t work again. isn’t that weird? i know it sounds weird, but i swear it’s true.

Hi!
I have the same problem as Diana Pop. I tried to put in my status the following link http://picasaweb.google.com/szaszmikolta/BangkokThailand03
but it didn’t work. I tried also Diana’s link the webshots one and it didn’t work for me either.
I’m using windows profesional and ym8.1 tried other versions of ym but without any luck. Please help me (us) to fix this. thanks

today it works! don’t know what happened, all of the sudden same status works. i’m never logging out now!
Comment by diana pop — March 4, 2008 #
and now it stopped working again!!! can you believe it? i didn’t logout, same status as yesterday…
Comment by diana pop — March 4, 2008 #
I recently noticed that all my status with a URL will not show up to friends while i can see it on my yahoo messenger.
I tried to log in to another computer and is still the same.
I logged in a different account but it works.
Is my account banned for status with URLs? Why? And how can this be fixed?
Comment by schadow1 — April 17, 2008 #
Badri,
You can remove or edit status messages by editing the preferences file (located in User/Library/Preferences and called “com.yahoo.messenger…(more)” using a tool such as PlistEditPro.
Look for the property list named “CustomStatusList”. An item preceded by ‘a-’ gives the available icon; ‘b-’ gives the busy icon.
Of course it’s probably easier to just make new ones in Yahoo!
