Yahoo! Messenger for the Web: new release

September 24, 2007 on 2:59 pm | In Web version | 25 Comments

This afternoon we released an update to Yahoo! Messenger for the Web. This new release includes:

– Save your thumbs! Now you can send text messages (SMS) to your friends’ mobile phones for free, right from Yahoo! Messenger for the Web. When your friend replies, it comes back to you in Messenger. You’ll notice the contact list is now divided into two areas: regular IM contacts and Mobile Contacts.

SMS is only available when messaging to mobile phones in the U.S., India and Canada. Note that it’s free for you to SMS from Messenger but your friends will incur any applicable data charges from their carrier to receive your messages.

– Brand new, local language versions for Thailand and Indonesia.

– 9 new languages for the Indian version (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada). After signing in at http://in.webmessenger.yahoo.com, start an IM with a friend and choose the Indian language you want to chat in from a drop-down menu.

If you haven’t already, give Yahoo! Messenger for the Web a try. There’s no download required, making it really handy when you’re at work, on the road or away from your own computer.

  1. Hi Sarah,
Since Yahoo! China opened the registration of ‘@yahoo.cn’ account, is there a plan to support those accounts in US version Yahoo! Messenger? Currently users can only use ‘@yahoo.cn’ account with Chinese version Yahoo! Messenger.

    Thanks, William

  9. I cannot write in romanian with either YM or WebYM. Both do not recognize Ș and Ț (two letters from the romanian alphabet) when they are typed under Vista.

It’s not an uncommon issue, see the explanation of it by Michael Kaplan ( Technical Lead in the International Fundamentals team at Microsoft ) at http://blogs.msdn.com/michkap/archive/2007/09/27/5141426.aspx

This issue can be solved by fully supporting Unicode in YM.

Also, the interface of YM is not translated in romanian, while Windows Live Messenger and Pidgin are already translated. I could do this translation for free, I already translated many programs (see at the bottom of the home page of my site).

And don’t worry, if they respond, you’ll get the reply back via Messenger. We’ve even got brand new, local language versions for Thailand, Indonesia, and new languages for India (nine of them in fact!). Read more here. [...]

  25. My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the expenses. But he’s tryiong none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am anxious about switching to another platform. I have heard excellent things about blogengine.net. Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it? Any kind of help would be really appreciated!
