New version: 8.1.0.416 (with security update)

August 21, 2007 on 6:40 pm | In News | 118 Comments

An important security update is now available for users of Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 on Windows. It is strongly suggested that all users download and install the latest version (8.1.0.416) that includes this update.

Even if you installed Yahoo! Messenger as recently as August 20th, 2007 you may not have the very latest version.

You can check to see if you have the latest version by clicking the ‘Help’ menu option at the top right of your Yahoo! Messenger window, and then clicking ‘About Yahoo! Messenger’ or ‘Check for Updates’.

If your Yahoo! Messenger version number is 8.1.0.416 (or higher) then you have the latest and do not need to take any immediate action. If you are running anything lower than 8.1.0.416 then please upgrade to the latest version.

If you choose not to upgrade on your own through the website, you will eventually receive an upgrade notification while logged into Messenger. Please click the ‘Update Now’ button and follow the instructions provided.

After you have upgraded to the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger, as a general rule, we recommend that, even if you know and trust the sender, you always take caution when receiving files from other Yahoo! Messenger users, clicking links, viewing webcams etc.

  3. Sarah thank you and I commend you for listening to our requests for informed updates. We appreciate that you are listening, after all, and are aware of our priorities: bots and access to chosen rooms. My guess is that you are a bright and conscientious woman who has been denied sufficient resources and authority. Keep swinging for us. Thanks again.

  4. I downloaded the new update and it still has bugs in it. Still keep geting chat error, a new one about communication error when trying to join a room, still keep hopping all over the place, and still all of them bots. My guess and I hope I am right Yahoo will be fixing the bots and room choice soon and some of the bugs with the new version.

  7. Each time a new version is installed, YIM insists on setting itself to start automatically when Windows starts, despite that I have it set not to do so in the previous version.

It remembers all other settings, but chooses not to respect that one. Do you guys get joy out of annoying users like that?

  8. yeah the rooms are messed up lots of peoples are complaining about it in rooms you try to go some where and it just takes you where ever, and hafe the times you try to enter in a room and you just get a Chat Error and says Communications Problem , also some times if you go to your chat list lot of the times it comes up blank and you have to keep clicking on other categories and just going back and forth tell you get the room list to where ever right or to show them are the most biggest problems right now

Very annoyed with these kinda updates. I might stop using YIM cos of this.

  12. Sarah Bacon,

My friend & I checked yesterday & it said there was an update so we downloaded it but the version it gave us was 8.1.0.415. Today we read this blog & it says that it’s 416 but when we click on “check for updates” it tells us we are running the current version. So how are we supposed to get the 416?

    Comment by MrsPsychoRat — August 22, 2007 #

  13. Same problem or experience as MrsPsychoRat. I had the same issue as MrsRat. My yahoo version was 8.1.0.415. When I went to upgrade to 416, it would not. It said I already had the most current version. So no update.

    Comment by drofpsych — August 22, 2007 #

  14. i just manually installed the latest version but i think if i signed i might have gotten the auto update window as well. and yeah kiki enjoy your 3rd party client and its complexity then lol. its because of 3rd party programs ability to connect to yahoo that you have all of these problems with bots and etc. in the first place.

  15. Sorry, as much as I like the chat rooms… I don’t want to be a beta tester. And yes I know yall say it isn’t a Beta… but your releases are full of flaws, untested, and have no real info on how they work other than my trial and error.

I prefer to give you time to fix your releases before I use them

  16. Hi, I look after the website and do some tech support at YTK Pro and I’ve got a few comments.

I think Yahoo!’s timely response to patch vulnerablities in its software should be commended. They addressed serious vulnerabilities in super fast time and no one has said ”well done”.

On the chatroom side of things – does anyone see the positive side in what Yahoo! is doing here?

    1. They Acknowledge that there are issue.
    2. They are working to resolve these issues.
    3. They are keeping us in the loop by feedback through this channel.
    4. We are starting to see results!

This is a free service (ad supported) and we’re getting a response albeit slow coming at times. How about we give the guys some more time to produce the goods and bring the fun back into Chat instead of bombarding them with flames and abuse.

    Think about it.

    Comment by Ian Kenefick — August 22, 2007 #

  17. @Donna

There is lots of software out there that isn’t labelled ‘BETA’ but is full of flaws. You use Windows right?

By downloading and installing Yahoo! Messenger you accepted Yahoo’s terms of service. If you don’t want to use the service then don’t use it – but destructive criticism doesn’t help anyone.

    Comment by Ian Kenefick — August 22, 2007 #

  18. This new version still isn’t working right. Been getting communication errors when trying to get into a room and chat error when I type into a room. Also. can’t get into the room I want but sends me all over the place to rooms I don’t even want to go to. The bots are still a problem…how come most of the rooms are 99.9% bots? This new version is just as bad as the previous version and I thought it would be better! Man was I wrong. Guess we will have to wait until Yahoo gets their act together and really fixes chat instead of getting these updates which are just as bad as what we already had.

Pictures remain fuzzy and do not focus and files sent come through as an X when opened up. It has been going on now for months!! Anyone have any idea or info???

  20. The Latest Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.0.416 has given something which I never expected from Yahoo, voice chat support in chatrooms for windows vista.

Now when you try launch Voice in chatrooms initially we get the “Your computer does not support the required audio compression format.” After clicking OK I once again connected to voice and there you have it I got Voice Chat in Yahoo Messenger on my Windows Vista Home Premium! I’d like to thank Yahoo for fixing this problem for all Windows Vista users. Although I must say I had the TSP Voice Codec already installed (downloaded from http://www.bytescribe.com/downloads/tsp_codec_install.exe ). So I am not so sure whether that did the trick or Yahoo really solved my problem because that codec had been installed for couple of months but I was never able to connect to voice chat in chatrooms in Yahoo! Messenger even then but as soon as I installed this latest build I instantly got back my voice chat. :-) Kudos to Yahoo!

  24. Hi MrsPsychoRat and drofpsych,

Thanks for bringing that issue to our attention. We synced up the ‘Check for updates’ page now so that if you are on .415 and go to that in the menu, it will prompt you to upgrade to .416. You can also always go to http://messenger.yahoo.com and download the latest version manually from there. Thanks,

  26. Just a comment for everyone who seems to think the 8.1.0.416 patch should be improving the problems in the chat rooms. As the message states, it is a *security update*. I’m not a Yahoo expert, but even I can tell that means it won’t have any effect on the chat rooms. It’s a security update, which means security. Viruses, hackers, that kind of thing.

Just quit the moaning and let the people get on with repairing the system. That is, after all, what we all want. Isn’t it?

    Comment by Richard — August 22, 2007 #

  27. Dear Sarah, with the new security updates to the Yahoo Messenger client will this put us, the Yahoo Chat user community, in a better position to get user rooms back? The day user rooms were removed is the day many users were left out in the rain. The official chat rooms are fine and good, but it’s all very bland.

Does this security patch include, per se, something that might be used in the future to bring back user chat rooms such as chat room naming restrictions?

Comment by Concerned Yahoo User — August 22, 2007 #

  28. If Sarah Bacon does read this I and others would like to know a tentative date Yahoo will have Messenger fixed?
I downloaded the security update but the rooms are still all botted up and you still don’t have choice of room….I and others don’t like trying to go to lets say Politics Lobby 7 and getting sent to Politics Lobby 97 instead. I am using Pal Talk until Yahoo gets all the issues worked out and gets chat working somewhat similar to how it was before all these issues started. I did have a lot of friends in chat and now I have to search the rooms on Pal Talk just to find out where they are at. My life doesn’t revolve around chat but I spend alot of time in chat because I can talk to people who have similar views to mine and I have made some nice friends in Yahoo Chat. Also, if you are going to add some new security features to Yahoo please don’t base it on a credit/debit card….not everybody has a credit/debit card and having a security feature based on that is going to knock alot of people out of chat. I know Yahoo doesn’t like the 3rd Party Chat Clients but they have features that Yahoo should have thought of and implemented in Yahoo…like Auto ignore and wild card ignore…..They do help in getting rid of bots without having to individually ignore each bot and once they are ignored they stay ignored….not like Yahoo where you have to individually ignore each bot or clone and then when you log back in have to go through the same process of ignoring the same bots and clones again. I hope Sarah and the others at Yahoo consider these suggestions because that would make us less likely to use 3rd Party Chat Clients if Yahoo Messenger had these features implemented. Waiting patiently until Yahoo gets fixed.

No my life aloso soesnt revolve around chat im capable of hitting the X at the top of a screen and continuing with my life in the real world . However i use to enjoy chat for relaxation company and fun times Ive emailed yahoo on numerous occasions with concerns and complaints to their chat rooms only to get a Automated response that has NOTHING to do with the issues at hand… Frustrating to say the least to know that not one person from yahoo could take the time to read these concerns and reply back… correct me if im wrong but if it wasnt for “us” chatters there wouldnt be no need for chat rooms!!
Unless of course yahoo is happy with having nothing but booters and porn bots taking over their rooms but seriously i doubt the sponsors/businesses that advertise with yahoo would be too impressed!
I for one would love to hear from yahoo reguarding these problems and what exactually they are doing to rectify them……..

Sadly you took part of my comments and misunderstood.

I think Yahoo has started doing a better job of communicating.

I have as much right as you to voice an opinion. I have tried other chat services and none comes close to Yahoo. But that doesn’t mean it is without flaws.

I am never disrespectful in my comments and have offered constructive critisism in many of my comments.

I request (again) that yahoo keep the lines of communication open. A page (no comments permitted) with status of “Chat, 360, email…” would go a long way to stop some of the frustrations expressed on these pages.

  51. And yet another security update… I have to address the same ‘issue’ that Sure pointed out and that is: WHY Yahoo! Messenger insist on starting itself automatically every time after updated version is installed??? Why? True, it takes less than 5 seconds to change it, but it’s extremely annoying. When will the Yahoo Messenger for Vista come out? Nobody knows. Since January we only got 1 (ONE) update about it, it’s coming soon, and that’s all. Yes, it’s free and we love it, but if there were no users who would advertise on it and how would Yahoo make revenue? Yahoo should take it’s users more seriously.

    Thank you!

  54. Hi. I am back once more.

    The problem (recurring problem):
Under one contact I have 2 IM addresses (Live/MSN messenger and Yahoo! messenger ID) of a person. Under the previous version they were together and were being shown as 1 contact. For example: even if my contact was online on Yahoo! and MSN at the same time, on my contact list it showed 1 person as online but on the Group bar it said 2/20 (say I have 20 persons in a group) person online…very logical and very good thing.

But now I have updated to the new version and the 2 messenger IDs (Yahoo and MSN) have got separated and they are being shown separately. ughhhh!! This happened with the last update too. Now, in order to make them one contact again I have to delete 1 messenger ID…and go back to the remaining one and the deleted ID to it once again.

Now, I have got 10s of contacts with 2 IDs (MSN and Yahoo) who were under one contact name and now I have to do the delete and add again to all of them. So frustrating and painstaking.

Why this separation is occurring Sarah? If you want, I can provide you more details on this problem.

    Please reply.

    Amen

it’s been all down hill ever since that ugly media flare up from the kiddy porn fear monger element.
when yahoo irrationally responded to the fringe and eliminated all the user created chat rooms.
“a classic case of dandruff cured by decapitation.”

anybody know of a chat platform comparable to the good old days of yahoo, if there isn’t one, somebody should jump on that, it’s clear the people want it…

  79. Sarah and all, wouldn’t it be easy to stick in a fix for chatroom voice for Vista in one of these updates???? It’s not like there aren’t 11 million people or more running vista… forget the fancy messenger for Vista. Fix this one to get voice in Vista. I know tons of people who are begging for it. Oh, and for the sex bots to disappear so we can actually get in a room……

Comment by full, closed and upgrade but no vista? — August 24, 2007 #

  80. Paltalk! Obviously, Sarah and her team could care less about chat. Every day that passes, it gets a little worse. I don’t care if some of you think this is a non-constructive comment. Think about it. What other program do you have that has progressively gotten worse through the years? yahoo cares about advertising revenue..that is the limit of their concerns. 5000 bots per category pays the same as 5000 people. If you wonder why the bots are still there, now you know the reason! Ask yourself why yahoo has not just shut down chat until the problems are fixed. Advertising revenue! yahoo sucks!

  83. Sarah,
You and yahoo are full of it. You keep sayin what you are trying. I know enough about software and fixes that it shouldn’t take you all this time to undo it. If nothing else you could simply restore it to what was there and then refine your fixes. You are more intersted in sellin advertising. You can’t even provide informative and timely updates. Just vague references and empty apologies.

I only hope Yahoo! catches those responsible for destroying free speech and prosecute their azz to to fullest extent of the law!

  90. I downloaded the newest version. BUT now can NOT see TEXT in chatrooms. Apparently many others that downloaded the newer version in an attempt to access chatrooms can’t see text either.

People are just more and more frustrated with what use to be a great Yahoo experience. And more are ldumping messenger as a result of this mess they’ve allowed and participated in (the porn bots) and the rest.

Downloade PaTalk and looking at other chat programs my friends have suggested. Guess I will maybe follow the crowd and forget about Yahoo.

  91. I haven’t updated yet but plan to soon but how about more skins for yahoo messenger. I currently only see 4 available and although the pink is nice, I would like to see this skins feature expanded to a few more options. You come up with new avatar outfits every week, so why not more yahoo skins too.

    Think about it.

Comment by Ian Kenefick — August 22, 2007″

You’re a putz. It’s not a “free service”. Nothing is free. We PAY for the service as a group by purchasing the products advertised. If it were not for the chat, we’d not sit around here all day looking at those ads without getting anything in return. Maybe you would.. but WE WON’T.

It’s not good business sense to piss off the people you’re hoping will respond to your ads, let alone make it nearly impossible to see the ads in first place (by the fact chat is practically broken).

  94. Here here —

I second, third and fourth the requests for a proper version for OS X. Ridiculous. Totally loosing me with this audio-less video conferencing. Poor response with over a year of development….no word out on the web to its status either. that is probably the most frustrating element. On the flip-side, for the switchers in the crowd — Trillian Astra will likely beat Y!Messenger in and out of beta.

Don’t even get me started on Yahoo Calendar. Should merge Calendar with the Franklin Covey planners — Think they are equally dated for the predigital age.

    Comment by Eric — August 28, 2007 #

  95. The main reason that I and many people do not wish to update our messenger programmes is the ignore/privacy option.

On version 8 ignoring ppl not on my list means I can no longer see the text of ppl not on my list in the chatroom, and given the quantities of ppl coming to our chatroom I really do not want to even think about attempting to add them all to my friends list.

But if I don’t ignore pms from ppl not on my list it means I am open to harassement from any idiot who wishes to pm and buzz me.

So until you ppl fix that I am sticking with my version 7.

  96. I am having some some issues with yahoo Voice (PC-Phone) as well as (PC to PC), I have had great service since signing up in DEC, have renewed twice. Currently have run into a snag with Yim Vioce not being able to call out (after three seconds returns with: ” We’re very sorry. The Yahoo! Voice service could not make this call right now. Please try again a little bit later. ” ) to another computer or phone. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it twice as well as ensured the Windows Firewall is off and the Norton Firewall is “Allow” for YiM.

again this problem just started last week, for no apparent reason.

Windows System is XP w/ SP2.

    YiM (8.1.0.416), Module (8.0.0.1)

Any Ideas Anyone? This is a real bummer….

  101. It’s such a shame on Yahoo with delaying the Vista version. But, folks, did you notice, that where you have a woman managing PR stuff, everything goes down in flames ? We’ve got Sarah here as a product manager for Yahoo Messenger and on Creative Forums we’ve got Catherine as a forum manager. Everything is dissastrous on both sites. While Yahoo loses ground not releasing Yahoo Mess(enger) for Vista ready in ages, the folks at Creative cannot release a Windows Vista audio Driver for their audio cards. SHAME SHAME SHAME SHAME SHAME SHAME !
I wish I would never have to say this, but I think Yahoo Mess(enger) for Vista won’t be ready even after Microsoft will release Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (that is first quarter of 2008)

  107. YIM is starting to get really buggy and full of ads, so here’s a good solution if no one has posted it yet. Start over. Create a whole new chat program with the same interface BUT do what google does when you create a new account, verify by sending a text message to a cell phone so it’s an actual person and not just a bot program cause it’s obviously an easy security breach if all these bots are makin it through which shows that yahoo doesnt know how to program security to save their lives, doesnt matter whether or not its free a program that millions of people use should not suck this much ass!

  114. How can I set the Yahoo Messenger Chat screen to come up in the same location (say … top right hand corner of my monitor) each time I click on a contact’s name? Every contact’s chat window used to come up in different places all over my monitor. Then I had my computer reformatted, ended up installing the latest version of Yahoo Messenger and now every time I click on any contact’s name, the chat window pops up in the middle of my monitor somewhere. I would just like to have them ALL open in the same location so that I don’t have to move each chat screen every single time to a preferred location.

Also I cannot seem to adjust the chat area where I type … it is very small.
