Chat rooms update
July 20, 2007 on 12:15 pm | In News | 327 Comments
Who was the weasel that coined the phrase “Patience is a virtue”? Because it seems like at the times when you most want something, someone says it to you.
Back in late May, I gave a “Chat Rooms: State of the Union” address here on the blog. Well, the 30 days I promised came and went…and then 20 more days and still no fix is in place for improved stability and reducing the annoying bots. The good news is that we have been working hard and we are close to releasing the fixes. The bad news is that we hit some bumps in the testing phase with our changes, and the bugs are taking longer than we expected to squash.
I don’t have a definitive date I can provide for when these chat room improvements will actually roll out (we know some of you have already snuck a peek). I apologize for the delay. Please try to be patient, we feel your pain. And please try to hold off on the flames toward us on the blog; we are as eager to get these fixes and improvements in to chat rooms as you are. We really do want to make them a more enjoyable place for you to hang out.
Thanks,
Jeff Bonforte
Vice President
Yahoo! Messenger

Chat is currently unusable though, with less than 50% of posts making it through to other users…

Only the losers who think that you clap your hands and the problems are gone come here and leave some stupid remarks.
The thing is that each problem has a solution. But with each solution comes a new problem. So the only thing that we have is to live with what we have, and always try to improve it. But the problems will never be over. So , thank Yahoo! for working to improve your services
Comment by Seinfeld — July 20, 2007 #
When solutions create problems you fire your designers and/or programmers, and hire ones that solve problems, and invent solutions.
If solving problems creates new problems, and you spend all your time in this cycle, you cannot get on and invent anything new, and then you have Yahoo! Chat.
Comment by Tommy — July 20, 2007 #
Thanks for the update. I can understand how a comprehensive overhaul can cause additional problems, and I personally appreciate, very much, your willingness to keep foks in the loop. Wishing you all the best for a speedy resolution, and improved chatting.
Comment by Ryan B — July 20, 2007 #
Thanks for the update Sarah. We’ve been waiting on a fix that works to solve the problems you addressed in your last blog entry. Thanks for the update. We all realize that you don’t have a huge staff and that it is being worked on. Giving us this bit of info shows that you really have been listening to our concerns and are implementing real solutions.
Comment by RegisteredTrademark — July 20, 2007 #
Opps, I see Jeff posted that! Thanks Jeff, and thanks to your entire, albeit small, staff.
Comment by RegisteredTrademark — July 20, 2007 #
Will you restore the yahoo chat on european versions of messenger??
Comment by Jiegen — July 20, 2007 #
Ok maybe if Sarah or someone would make a post each day and give us a update on how things are going, maybe that would help put out a few of the flames.I have read all the other post on every site I can find, and that is whay alot of them are asking for is just updates on how its going.I know because I have posted that and all my post have been deleted because I wasn’t staying on topic.Well the topic here is chat,so keep giving those updates and alot of people would cool it. Joy brings love, love those updates.
Comment by JOY — July 20, 2007 #
are you sure you are working on trying to get rid of the bots? the room where i am in now has 13! bots, all yahelite bots. GOOD LUCK!!!!

To The Vice President Of Yahoo ,
what is the point of doing upgrades , i and the rest of the chat community don’t see no improvement at all in getting into the chat rooms!!!???
again i must mentioned this , what is you definition of improvement??? the improvements i’ve been seeing the last 2 years gone worst!!!! we get booted even more than the usual and when we complaint about it we get automated answers and not actions/results!!!
is this improvement by taking away JAVA and CHAT2 protocols and not to forget USER ROOMS!!!??? not just getting into rooms harder but when we do get in , we can’t see text , we can’t change room right away as we get stuck!!!, screen don’t move basically the servers gone really slow!!!!
for a start this so called improvement/upgrade ain’t really eradicating bots/booters/hackers and so on!!! all this promises and talks don’t bring nothing but disappointment.
Vice President you might as well not give us dates when the services be back to normal. services can be kept as it is while doing the BETA testing!!!
also NOTE this : after so much tries getting into rooms we ended up temporarily BANNED from entering chat rooms!!
thanks a lot for the upgrades!
Yahoo Fanatic ,
Dave

Well, I hope that you do something about that horrible 18 second mic time limit.
Cutting the mic time was singularly the most horrible change in Yahoo since I arrived.
People get cut off all the time.
Are you going to restore unlimited mic time or what????
Comment by Kevin The Genius — July 20, 2007 #
Yeh whats up with the time limit. nobody efver explained that. yahoo cuts services and never improves anything. fix the time limit!
Comment by enterprise jurt — July 20, 2007 #
Kevin and Jurt -
Adjusting mic time limits is not part of the plans for these initial improvements. But we will take into consideration. Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

Now, now people…you’re complaining about a service you don’t pay for. I can spend hours in chat rooms, and no one sends me an invoice. Yahoo is in business to make money like every other company, and they have bigger fish to fry than the chat rooms (like Google). Try to be understanding. I will get off my soapbox!

I am just glad to finally get a response to the questions. The “flames” mentioned in your message were not so much a result of the ever deteriorating chat engine as much as it was a response to a perceived lack of interest in letting us know what was happening. The perception has been that yahoo doesn’t care. That yahoo ignores its users. That yahoo makes promises and then offers not even an acknowledgement that the promiose wasn’t kept. So, well done this time. This is what we wanted. A simple admission of problems and some ongoing reassurance that our concerns are not being ignored when an announced “deadline” isn’t met. Please keep at it and don’t forget the users who are anxiously awaiting the end result of your efforts. You deserve credit for your hard work and we deserve the respect befititng thos of us interested enough to follow this blog.
Comment by Bill — July 20, 2007 #
Yahoo is in business to make money. In April of last year, the chat rooms were down for the better part of a day. Guess what? Yahoo fell from number one at alexa.com–to about 12,000. Go look. The chat rooms ARE the business of Yahoo.
It is good that Yahoo realizes this and wants to keep the chatrooms pleasant.
I’ve seen the mic time cut, the user rooms dropped, the java and 2.0 ended, the porn bots added, and I hhaven’t noticed anything fixed.
If yahoo could fix the mic time and the porn bots, it can be assured of staying number one.
Comment by bill the dealer — July 20, 2007 #
I’m glad to know that someone’s working on the issue – overhauling a system can be a slow process, but hopefully it’s being undertaken in the quickest way possible.
For months and months now the chat servers have been horribly unstable, sometimes taking hours to let a single user into a room – or not letting us in at all. Add to that the EXTREME problem with porn/SPAM bots and the removal of user-created rooms, and you have the mess that proponents of Yahoo Chat are so upset about!
I’ve never found an IM client that could compete with Yahoo as far as function – I love everything from the chat integration to the multiple profiles to the Archiving system. But it’s hard to love everything when it’s not performing. Try to remember that we’re only so upset because we love our Yahoo Chat/Messenger – and we want it back with full functionality!
Please keep us updated on the progress – what most of us want most is to know that our problems are being addressed (and in a timely fashion.)
Comment by Elle — July 20, 2007 #
Well Sarah… This one blog at the first would have been so much better for negative comments from alot of the people. All any of us with an exception to a few thick headed people wanted to hear was that you all know there is a problem, I don’t need a date when your stuff is fixed, I just wanted to know you all knew there was problems and you were addressing them. I haven’t logged into Yahoo! Messenger in months, but now I see that you people at Yahoo! are trying to fix things, I will login right now. I would like nothing more to join the rooms I used to hang around in and see all my old friends there chatting away like the “Good Ol’ Days!”. The one thing I get a kick out of though is these people that get hacked through Yahoo!, I highly doubt anyone has been hacked directly through Yahoo!. You people that got hacked were probably booted with a file request booter or if you did have a trojan etc, it was probably from the illegal music or movies from some of these sites on the web. If you accept files is the number 1 way to get hacked, get a brain- get an antivirus- get a router- get to know how your computer works and be smart about the things you do with it.
Thanks Yahoo! (Sarah) for finally writing a blog adressing the piss-offs instead of the add-ons. “CHOW!”
Comment by Polar — July 20, 2007 #
Thank you, thank you, thank you. All most of us users wanted was just an update on how things were going. Most of us know that updating messenger/chat would be difficult at best. Continual postings of updates will probably eliminate a good portion of the “flames” directed towards the Messenger team. The lack of any response to postings from users, especially after the 30 day goal was missed, was taken to be indifference of the Messenger team and Yahoo as a whole. Please keep us updated.
Comment by Gary — July 20, 2007 #
Let me get this straight…
You run into bumps on the alpha servers and the alpha servers effect the current 7 year old servers how?
If you’re working on the alpha servers and removing the older servers then they should be just working as they always should have thus not behaving like they have done in the last few days.
Does this mean you’re working on more than just the alpha servers and working on the YMSG protocol also?
Will Yahoo! be removing support for the older versions of YMSG that older non supported versions of yahoo! messenger currently use after this adjustment?
Yahoo! have a system message service on it’s servers and built into yahoo! messenger, Your engineers could easily notify users of related servers issues instead of having users “flaming” your blog for answers as to why they cannot access chat or losing text in chatrooms.
I suggest you use that system more for alerting users of “technical difficulties” you may have in future.
Makes sense!

I didn’t even know yahoo had a Blog till tonight while trying to mess with chat and get into a room and finally when I did started a conversation about yahoo messenger and chat and someone gave me a link, WOW!! Word does get around and Personally I think the majority appriciate being clued in once in a while, Where does anyone get off being pissy about it? One I could see if like another user said ” we had to pay for it”
Two I seem to have read a recent article that yahoo was trying to make some long term adjustments not just updates and fixes. People do you notice shit or not around yahoo? Games was flooded with bots for some time and it was difficult getting into or playing cards for me, I got frusterated and just stopped playing eventually. Then heard news of some major changes and cards is now a nice place to play on the net again. IF yahoo is working on make solutions people then LET THEM !!!! Stop your flippin’ biatching I think its kewl they are communicating with a blog so people can read about what they are doing.
Look at the logicistics of it if we thank them and tell them there work is appriciated will that make them feel good and thus help them get the job done right and more quickly?
OR will bitchin at them and being whinny little kids because your free chat service isn’t working the way YOU want it tooooo make them just get it done all the more quickly?
How long does it take them to read all of these messages? I will admit I like the chat services as much as everyone else and I know its not yahoo that is killing our experience its the flooders the hackers and the kronny little script kiddies that is ruining the chat experience, Yahoo is trying to make their fun harder and ours better again. Where did this start people ??? Old chatters THINK ( do you remember the trolls and when they started?) People we chatters is what made there yahoo experience Fun for them and not for us!! Ever hear an old chatter say ” SToP feeding the trolls?” It meant ignore the nusence little shit and it will go away because being ignored by the majority of the room wouldn’t be fun for them. I don’t know how many times I would see people argue with a troll or FEED it in other words so that it just kept coming back again and again. Then ….. They told there hacker and script kiddie friends what fun it was to mess with chat rooms and hack user accounts, (remember folks?)
So in a Logical way of looking at all of this what gives any chat user or yahoo mail user the right to Bitch at Yahoo?
I appriciate you yahoo I know things are always changing . I know one bad apple spoils the whole bunch too.
Thanks for the blog it was nice.

Having a service is fine..but you lack the comprehension of the points stated..
does a airbag say “caution this may break your nose and ram your nose into your brain?”
“if your car breaks down in the highway will you get out of it and walk down the road thinking about a better model a few weeks down the road as you block traffic?”
would you play games if you took 5 moves and got points in each and only 2 gave you points that were recorded?
The fact is the service/system is unusable and free or not the communication between company and user should be a lot more clear than it is…chat users see advertisements, advertisements make yahoo revenue, if they cant chat…yahoo doesn’t make that revenue.
it is in yahoo’s best interest to make sure users see their advertisements to make a earning to supply chat for free in the first place.
lots of people can bake cakes, but people who bake good cakes get people buying their product while the rest go stale…its the name of the game and any corporation knows it.
even yahoo having a updated chat server status page using asp or other would be beneficial to users who have questions about service.
only reason this blog gets flamed is because its the closest thing they have to it..

when are you going to fix the security for the screen names people are using crackers to crack names you cant make anymore and they are selling them thats why i like paltalk.
You can secure your Paltalk account by turning “Enhanced Nickname Security” ON. When this feature is on, if someone tries to login with your nickname on a computer different than the one you normally login with, they will be prompted to enter the answer to your secret question as well as your password
Comment by mike r — July 21, 2007 #
Yahoo! Chat shows adverts even when it doesn’t work, at the bottom, on the chat transition ad.
Advertisers are paying for those, but we’re not actually paying attention when trying to get into the room over and over – you have a negative thought because chat doesn’t work, and you will remember this thought as you see that product, and will not buy it.
Comment by Tommy — July 21, 2007 #
Those flames that you saw from me has been building up for over 2 years now. I am really not as evil as I made my comments sound. Its just that the comment “We hear you” was really annoying and I don’t think you did hear us before. But now I believe that you do.
I am glad you fixed your search engine at least you do fix services when they brake, but it sure does take awhile. Its funny google search seemed like it was broken to at the same time. lol

”Adjusting mic time limits is not part of the plans for these initial improvements. But we will take into consideration. ”
ARE YOU NUTS? that is the best thing yahoo has done in recent years the mic time stamp limit to 25 seconds it stops people locking the mic shure there is voice domination now that simply resets the time stamp and allows the user to lock the mic for x ammount of time it would not surprise me if you removed this then tards can run riot and play music ALLLLL day yes great idead :l all the good features seem to be disapearing how about bringing back the /goto command
that was a neat feature but nope its gone what else is going to go…….
Comment by AreYou4Real — July 21, 2007 #
To Yahoo Vice President ,
Your techs shouldnt have any problems if you guys will drop Authentication lower than YMSG15Auth.
This should kill most of the bots in the room not to mention such Chat Client as YahElite which is heavily used by pornbots in the room!
Also it will get rid most of them booters and so on , as they still use the old YMSG12Auth for the programs to work.
Comment by Dave — July 21, 2007 #
AreYou4Real ,
I doubt that the /goto user will be revibe due to too many stalkers in the chat rooms.
As for the many good features being stripped away from the Yahoo Messenger that’s really sad. I too was upset when they removed the best features!

It seems yahoo messenger is getting slower and slower each day. Today, so far , I have tried for 45 minutes to get in a chat room. I have hi-speed cable ,and I checked with my provider. The problem is with YAHOO. If I can find another chat site, I am going there as fast as i can and tell others there is someplace other than YAHOO.It seems like YAHOO doesn’t care abotu the messenger service it provides. They took away the user rooms, and the option to create a room. Why should anyone even think of using YAHOO or its services?
Comment by Dick — July 21, 2007 #
im sick to death of this. all I do is try and try and try and restart and try and restart and try and what do I come up with? A big fat nothing, I cannot talk to any of my friends cause I spend all my time getting into the rooms. This is maddening and also ridiculous. If u cant take care of your problems, means you are going to lose most your customers. Come on guys lets get in gear and get this job done that had been plaguing yahoo customers for a long time, Id like to be able to talk to my friends. Please help. I cant get in any rooms now.

Yahoo has been getting worse for the day user rooms were banned. The reason of banning them was obvious but from that period on yahoo has been getting worser every time.
I hope you’ll eventually do take care of the problems as the number of users using yahoo messengers is dramatically decreasing.
Comment by Jama Farrah — July 21, 2007 #
Am sick of those annoying bots, it seems that there are more bots that humans. Limiting the number of bots in the chat rooms should be your top priority.

Yahoo’s talk is a bunch of crap!!!! They are so big, but can’t fix the chat servers? Give me a friggin break!!! I think I’ve tried to get into a chatromm about 50 times the past month, and got into one maybe 3-4 times. Terrible odds and a waste of time. As technology evolves, so does the run around!!!! People should stop complaining. Everyone begged for an update (including myself), and now that you got one – you do nothing but complain MORE.
Thanks Jeff for the update here as it is greatly appreciated. I also think it was a very wise move to not give any specific date or time period, as it would only lead to more flaming and bitterness if the deadline isn’t met again.
The only thing most of us want, is simply an update once in a while. Once a week, or at least once every two weeks would be sufficient for the majority of people. Please, just keep us informed and people will feel a lot better!
Comment by Parry Hotter — July 21, 2007 #
I don’t know, most of these people thanking Jeff for the update seem to be bashing the so-called “complainers” but as I see it did Jeff really tell us anything we didn’t already know or couldn’t figure out on our own?
While I agree that expecting a “definite date” for software development is unreasonable, I also cringe at the word “soon.” I would expect at least a time frame for which we can expect this update. Wasn’t the word “soon” used in the previous information update as well?
Comment by Ron — July 21, 2007 #
OK Yahoo!.
As you already know, bots are not that big of an issue for people like me.
What needs to be sorted out, and forget the Captcha method and Anti spam, you need to get your programmers to sort out the Servers that are dropping the packets regarding chat.
Messenger Services seem to be perfectly fine, so stop concentrating on them.
The room ACK Packet to initiate Chat Enter, this is the point where Invite packets get turned on so people from chat rooms can invite you.
It also contains the version of Messenger you’re using, this packet also instructs the server to get your ID out of the room.
This packet is being dropped a lot.
the Join Packet, it too is being dropped, if you send it 10 times, if you’re lucky you might get the packet processed on the 3rd attempt.
Chat room packets are also being dropped around 40% packet loss if you type quickly, if you type slowly, something like 5% loss.
Invite Packets are also being lost, yet Messenger packets, IM’s Conf Invites, Audibles etc etc are all untouched, they’re fine..
So at what point does the Dodgy Server you have going fail, obviously the network structure of your servers is fine just 1 weak point concerning chat.
Could your Engineers please locate this and fix it, if you don’t all that’s going to happen is people will start taking 2 id’s in the chat room to see what posts are being dropped, the end result is simple, more pressure being put in the server because this one problem has being going on far too long now.
IT should not be all that difficult to locate this problem, and the server once upon a time worked fine.

I sincerely hope you install the ability to ignore everyone not on your friends list with out affecting the ability to see and hear them in your newer version.. you took it away after 7.04 and thats why I don’t update… I agree you have taken away things that were working well only to add things that aren’t really needed nor benificial…
Comment by Charged — July 22, 2007 #
To my mind right now the best answer is to close the chatrooms altogether untill all the problems are fixed.
Then no one would lose their rag in trying to connect, with the bots (that are a particular pain as far as I’m concerned) or anything else you can think of that tries your patience whilst the system just isn’t up for it. And Yahoo wouldn’t get flamed so much as it has been.
When everything’s ready to go open up the rooms again and (hopefully) no bots and an enjoyable expereince once again (which it sure hasn’t been for ages.)
For me I wouldn’t miss the rooms in the sorry state that they are as of now…in closing them for the fix I would still have my buddies to chat to so it’s not as though the world’s going to end for other Yahoo users is it?
So I say close em and fix em…maybe then we’ll all be happy when we have a clean useable system rather than the trashy can I get in and when I do I get the botted and booted to death type of arrangement that we all put up with now.
Just three pence worth from a weary English user.

to stop getting disconnected wen someone pms you i find going invisable stops it. bots go straight into my ytunnel super iggy bin i don’t get booted from rooms anymore since i switched my pm status to friends list only never click a link or except any file transfers never been hacked if i have trouble with mic i use yazak for voice. only problem i have is getting into rooms and messages going into rooms no one can see them i still use the messenger 7.0 i do put 2 ids in the room one on yahoo and one on yazak to see which messages are not getting through and if the servers go down and im not able to get in to a room i start a conference and invite everyone from my regular room into it and you don’t get any booters in it or bots and can chat and have a laugh without any hassles in an ideal world we would love yahoo chat to be free from faults but im ok waiting just like to be kept upto date on whats happening and instead of moaning and getting stressed just find a way around it like i have till its sorted .!

Jeff,
thank you very much for your continued effort it getting it all fixed. Having frequented Yahoo chat rooms for 8 years, and even picking up a great husband in one of them, I have seen chat have it’s good, it’s great, it’s bad and it’s downright lousy times.
As this is a free service, I have never felt much use for complaining, and I am very gratefull for the fact that the service still exists. I for one, am also very happy with the mic time limit. It means idiots can not play music for hours on it anymore, totally rendering the mic function unusable for all other chatters.
Keep up the amazing work, and thanks so much for the regular updates. It must be one heck of a job trying to overhaul it all.
Comment by Ineke — July 22, 2007 #
I think its very funny that me and my friends write our own chat clients and there more stable and far less bootable than “Yahoo Messenger”. how about having a contest to find a new programmer for your yahoo messenger. or making it open source to developers.
Comment by John — July 22, 2007 #
I agree that the limit to the mic time is a good thing, and a necessary thing. I don’t even know why yahoo did not do it earlier.
BUT, why no one answers to this thing:
WILL YAHOO RESTORE THE CHAT OPTION ON EUROPEAN (I.E. ITALIAN) VERSIONS OF YAHOO MESSENGER? IT DISAPPEARED SINCE 2004…
PLEASE REPLY
thanks.

okay its like this think of how many Millon’s of people use yahoo everyday. think of a year and half to 2 years ago when mass ignore bots flooded everyone room thats why the time limit was introduced. and it makes sense i d rather have a time limit than have 700 bots flood a room. when you have people like markus, and the Millions of pathetic script kiddies that flood that yaho rooms… the very fact that yahoo is at least addressing these issues now instead of leaving people high and dry is saying something so everyone should be patient at least yahoo is doing something now

I find it’s quite nice to read everyone’s opinions on things like this. Isn’t this what a true community does? Everyone is having problems, so they voice their opinions.
Ok, I admit, most sound really demanding, but they should know that changes are coming, and they should take assurance on such things.
Jeff/Sarah, you guys are going to keep us posted on the problems, right? If you guys need help, there’s some individuals in the community who would be glad to help like Craig, Adam, and Chet.
I think in the end, everything will work out for the best.

In terms of updates for better , Yahoo’s just getting worst!
Their best features all been taken away , prolly next in line will be chatrooms too so nomore booting , hacking , spamming and so on , just pure PMs
)
When it come to spamming YahElite is really number 1 , though it only uses YMSG12Auth which Yahoo Inc wont drop as of yet!
Come on Yahoo Vice President bring on the YMSG16 Authentication out and drop the rest that is lower than that! Yahoo Inc will not lose much if you drop YMSG12Auth infact this will get rid of the Spams , Booters and so on for a while. As for YMSG15Authentication they’re still having fully functional .DLLs
Bring the USER ROOMS back , and also give us the authority to kick people out of the room when someone step out of line !! This idea is also good for kicking pornbots and them booters!!

I’m user of yahoo messenger from last 3 or 4 years, but still i see those bugs / problem which we face at that time when we had join yahoo.
comparing with other chat Messengers, yahoo is really far behind from “PAL TALK, MSN and AOL”
the biggest problem which i face on yahoo is , no real time room list update. when you click on a room for joining (i.e it has 30 users in that room) most of the time you got a F****** error of “This room is full please try another room” WTF ????
I’m ending my comments with quote of Tommy as he wrote
“When solutions create problems you fire your designers and/or programmers, and hire ones that solve problems, and invent solutions.
If solving problems creates new problems, and you spend all your time in this cycle, you cannot get on and invent anything new, and then you have Yahoo! Chat.”

Dear Yahoo Vice President ,
A day passed by and still getting into chatrooms is harder than normal.
I understand preassure is the last thing you need right now , I am not just an individual having problems with this but a lot of us are having this ISSUES that need resolving , firing or hiring new programmers aint really going to make any difference. Its best to stick to the same engineers so they’ll know how to reproduce problems that need resolving.
Mr Yahoo Vice President , sort this matters out ASAP !!

I’m glad to see things getting fixed up, and that progress is slowly being made. Being short staffed is never fun for any job. Regardless, I hope the new build will be satisfying. My main question, as have been many is, “Are you bringing back user rooms?” I understand there’s a lot on your plate right now. I’d just like to know with the ability to make quicker updates, if we can look forward to user rooms in the near future.

Why did I have to learn about this blog by googling “Yahoo Messenger Problems”? I recommend emailing every user the site for the blog. And yahoo.com should also mention the blog. After reading the blog about messenger problems, I feel somewhat better (but still frustrated) that the problems are being addressed and that Yahoo does care!!!!

Hi Dan,
As we mentioned in a post in January (http://blog.messenger.yahoo.com/blog/2007/01/22/lets-chat/), we will not be bringing back user-created chat rooms. Thanks,

Dan, adding the ability to kick people out of rooms is the worst thing I have ever heard of. Just what we need, the “regs” and their elitist groups of “friends” kicking out newcomers and people they feel are unworthy of “THEIR” room.
Comment by Parry Hotter — July 23, 2007 #
Parry, that’s why Yahoo created the “Ignore” button. There would be a lot less problems in the chatrooms if people ignored people who irked them. However, some people are incapable of ignoring “offenders” because they can’t stand NOT knowing what is being said. Granted, there are regulars in the chatrooms, but so what? Newcomers are always welcomed if they are not abusive toward others and don’t spew hateful diatribes. Anyway, its all moot. We can’t get into the chatrooms anyway. lol.
Comment by Robin — July 23, 2007 #
I was wondering, after everything is finished and running smoothly again. Will the chatrooms actually appear in numerical order on the room lists?
Comment by Gary — July 23, 2007 #
Sarah/Jeff, I was wondering, how much of the new chat servers are complete percentage wise? 80%? 90%?
And yes, like Tom above, I’m grateful that you guys even have a way to be in touch with the users.

Vaporware, “un”connectability, and bots bots bots
This has gone beyond maddening. No messenger for VISTA, Total inability to log into chat for hours at a time. And more than half the lines typed into chatrooms disappearing into nul. It’s intolerable. Three-quarters of the people I used to regularly see in the chatroom I frequent find it all too frustrating to tolerate and don’t bother any more. The rest of us are trying to get by on voice when somebody isn’t playing a song (which by the way we like to do in our room).
I can’t imagine that Yahoo is making more money by driving away three-quarters of it’s users. I can’t imagine that Yahoo is making money by shooing away Vista users. And I can’t imagine that Yahoo is making enough money from sex bots that it can afford to have 35 sex bots and 7 chatters in a room. Let’s get REAL!!!!

With the on-going problem with bots in the chat rooms, I wondered if Yahoo could somehow implement the same or similar system that has been intro’d in the games rooms. If a chatter had to manually type in a code every half hour or so, with only a limited time to respond to the prompt, then the non-responding ID’s (bots and room sitters) could be auto-booted. At the very least the bot makers (I refuse to call them masters) would be kept busy keeping the bots active.
Peas, peas, peas…don’t let them win. Yahoo chat is still the best on the net.
Thanks, Cheeky

“Impossible there will always be booting even if the patch the older ymsgr authencations there is http and wap booting/flooding there is booters already that use this do you lot really belive yahoo are going to fix chat are you that gullible its HAD SPAM SINCE DAY”
Jeff,
Is this true? You are not going/willing or able to fix the booting problems? If not, can you at least say so so we know what to do? I don’t believe this is true at least from a technical standpoint–these problems are 100% fixable.
I mean, if this is true it seems the same can probably be said of the botting, room locking and all the other problems. This continues to be a problem in a # of rooms–especially the politics rooms.
Also there are a number of people replying with comments of a technical nature.
I believe in a # of cases these are these third party chat programmers who make “yahelite”, “ymlite”, “yazak”, etc..etc..
In other words, yahoo messengers competition! If you are changing protocols and the infrastructure to work better and it will be for the better of y! messenger to cure the booting and botting, then please don’t listen to these requests. Most people will still want to use y! msgr–but only if you make it and your servers/protocols work correctly and outshine yahelite, and the other programs out there.
Why anyone would complain if yahoo is changing their protocols for the greater good in the long run is beyond me..unless they are the botters and booter programmers themselves? hmmmm.
Comment by chatter_chatter_chatter — July 24, 2007 #
Have you ever considered using a security pass for getting into chat, liek the one you use when you sign up for a yahoo screen name. Maybe make it a lil easier to read though sometimes those security words are really hard to see. You also have common names for many bots you could filter and deativate those. Not only are the names alike for porn bots but many booters and yahoo mass iggies use common names to run in them.
Comment by Ron — July 24, 2007 #
Oh another consideration is to have room admins and give them the power to ban names from coming in to the rooms but you would have to track that to prevent abuse of power. they could deactivate bots and this would help alot. I am sure you could get many volunteers to do that or give them a few extra yahoo perks.

Jeff,
All I can say is “COMMUNICATION”.
This is one of the absolute surprises when I came to view this blog.
Most of the time Yahoo Makes announcements about something coming soon, but then the day comes and goes, without a word of what’s happening.
What you’ve done here by communicating to other yahoo users what’s going on is to at least tell people you haven’t forgotten about them.
So, good for you!!! Keep up the progress reports, and I can almost guarantee the flaming will slow way down.
Thanks again

Chat worked just great yesterday, July 24th. However, today it’s the same old story. Can’t connect to chat, in anything! Messenger, which never works for me so had to go to a 3rd party chat client and now that won’t connect.
Do we all have to go find a new chat?? No one wants to, but this is ridiculous.

Well then it sounds then it’s time for a new scheme or protocols. And if that means changing things so these other programs like yahelite or whatever don’t work anymore, then so what? As long as it works correctlya nd with yahoos own msgr, that’s all they should care about and that’s all joe user will care about since new people to yahoo are going to download the official yahoo msgr over these others. Those were only made because yahoo DIDN’T work correctly or allowed people to be booted or etc.
Also to the poster that said they changed their preference to friends list and aren’t getting booted anymore..that’s not technically correct. You may not get IM bombed, but you can still be booted apparently (?) ugh. The more I find out about this the more I want to just give up and leave it. It’s not worth the hassle.
And the botting still continues (various politics chat rooms botted up at least)

LOL i have to laugh sorry m8 but yes you can still be booted you do not stop getting packets if you ignore people not on your list you can get hit by anything aslong as it overflows yahoos buffer then yahoo will disconect you why yahoo do not disconect the ids the vast ammount of packets come from i will NEVER know this would STOP booting period unless somone found something similar to the http room booter again but then again it was patched. you still get im bombed just because you can not see it … does not mean to say you are not you are not if the sender (booter) sends more data than you can download then you get diconected simple as no matter what you are on.

O one way you can stop being flooded/booted if you do not use chat is to use the option connect in connection prefrences (on messenger) to connect with firewall with no proxies this inturn will use the http proticol instead of the default one it is HARD to be booted off unbootable almost. but it is hmm lets say unstable as hell random dcs etc :l

I didn’t read any of the comments……but thanks for the update……maybe once yahoo gets chat up in running again you might consider a yahoo messenger/chat/e-mail status page……this way users will know whats working and what’s down…..and not rely on the usual gossip that makes the rounds in chat.
thanks for reading…appreciate the effort
Comment by Joe — July 26, 2007 #
OK then….
You fixed the dropped packet issues regarding login, and logout and all is good…
however, there’s only 1 more problem that needs to be sorted out, here it is.
Sign into messenger, connect to chat, you enter the room, if you disconnect the socket client side, winsock acknowledges this drop server side and sends the buddy offline notification etc etc, but what fails to happen is this, the ID Sticks in the chat room because the packet to indicate you want to leave never gets sent.
So we end up with a situation where there’s 30 ids in the chat room that they’re no longer even connected, is there no way to add some code to messenger’s server to instruct the chat server to also leave the chat room when the socket is killed or times out?
Then the chat server would be perfect. and everyone would see a max of 50 id’s not 200 ids over a period of 2 hours?
Well anyway thanks for what you have done, Adding this would make it complete
Comment by cjdelphi — July 26, 2007 #
SO!! the servers are up and running again. it really is a great improvement now WOW! i still count 4 pornbots in the room where i am in and 8 bots so real people can’t get in.YAHOO!
Comment by miranda — July 26, 2007 #
At the moment it does appear the dropped chat login and logout problem has been fixed. Chat login & logout has worked flawlessly for me since about 4:30pm GMT – 5 yesterday. If it stays this way the next few days, I think it’ll be safe to say it’s fixed for good.
I agree with cjdelphi. If you’re in a chat room and the TCP connection to the server is terminated, your name is never logged out of chat. However all normal YMSG services are signed out in this same case. This should apply to chat in addition to normal messenger services in the case of a disconnect. I think it’s a good idea and it would fix a long outstanding problem.
You could also argue that bots and spam are still a problem, but it’s best to tackle that one step at a time. Being able to enter chat has a higher priority than eliminating spam in my opinion. Though spam bots are annoying, they can always be ignored. However after all kinks involving chat stability are worked out, spam should be the next priority.
Comment by Infinite Luta — July 26, 2007 #
To be honest I have noticed an improvement in the chat-rooms the past couple of days. Granted the system still needs lots of work, but I am seeing some improvements nonetheless. And I appreciate Jeff finally saying something on the matter. If anything that’s what really pisses people off, when promises are made and nothing is said when the promises are left unfulfilled. But seeing how they have made progress, I’m willing to wait then.

Much of the discontent could be solved by a simple “Yahoo chat will be undergoing repairs from 0100-1100 EST on XX July 2007.

I just found this blog today and think its great to see Yahoo admit they we users really exist and that they are willing to give us a clue as to what is going on. Thank you Sarah and Jeff.
I see that some are saying that service is back but I don’t see it. I can log into messenger but when i try to get into ANY chat room it times out and says try again later. Try (and fail) to log in then go do something around the house and try (and fail) again an hr or two later. Well, at least this way I’m getting a few things done around the house and not setting here punching keys. lol
I am NOT a programmer or an IT person so I have no idea what it going on. Neither do I have any idea how to bake it better. All i know is that its NOT working.
For a long time I have had the question in the back of my mind as to who is really running the system. Is it yahoo or is it the bots, booters, hackers, etc. Today it looks like yahoo lost the battle and consequently we users lost also.
have a great day

Yes i KNOW you can still be booted with all the prefs set to friends list and blah blah..that’s what I was saying! What I’m saying is that is fixable or should be. You’re saying or sound like, they can’t fix it at all. I disagree–they can fix that. They could just properly respect peoples preferences on their servers and not allow those packets to go out to someone not on their friends list. That would solve that problem, and there are other things that could be done that aren’t with traffic shaping and etc.
And the point about being able to connect to chat being the priority..uhh no it’s not! Not if a greater plan is in place to revamp their system. What’s more important really is that messenger continues to work in the mean time, not that you can connect to the silly chat rooms. The thing that really stinks is that you dont even have to USE the chat rooms and as Karl points out which I have already learned the more I find out about yahoo, you can be booted even just using messenger. No chat, nothing. Maybe a chat room might be the way someone decides they’re going to attack you with bots or whatever, but once they have your ID you don’t even have to be in a chat room. Just IM with a friend or whatever and you can be booted.
As for the chat..it would be something if at the very least the botting could stop. There is not much point in trying to connect to a room when its full of bots. The porn bots are one thing, that’s just a few bots here and there usually. But there are people clogging these rooms up..intentionally. With dozens and dozens of bots. Surely that is something that could easily be corrected. It should be obvious that they aren’t even porn bots, at least those post text into the room usually. These cloggers just stay there to take up space and lock the rooms up.
I know it’s a free service and perhaps there isn’t even a right to complain, but if they want someone to at least use messenger, the booting and exploits there should still be corrected finally. It’s free but there’s not much point in having it, free or not, when nobody can get into the chat or can be booted off of it by someone other than yahoo!
I say whatever it takes to make it work correctly and better, including redoing their whole system.
Jeff, you shouldn’t care if yahelite or those other programs don’t work correctly–only that y! messenger does. And it’s highly probable that some of the people writing those other programs are responsible for at least some of the booting and botting activities.
Comment by chatter_chatter_chatter — July 26, 2007 #
Yes chatter the people who develop 3rd party clients such as craig (ymlite) are responsible for a part of the problem he releases malicious progs to the public all the time yet he tries to make chat better with his client go figure LOL..

It would be nice if you fix Yahoo Messenger. I haven’t used it for months now since it was almost impossible to get into a room. I have been using Yahelite since it has an auto ignore feature and wildcard ignore to auto iggy bots and spammers. but it seems the bots are filling up the rooms with sometimes up to 20 names making it impossible even on Yahelite to get into a room. And then the porn bots! when is Yahoo even going to do something to address that problem? with bots and porn bots they can fill up a room and hardly anybody can get in. Hope you guys are working to address this problem.
Comment by John — July 28, 2007 #
John don’t use those other programs like yahelite. Apparently those people making those programs are some of the same responsible for the booting and botting and locking up chat rooms in the first place. If yahoo can make their protocols servers and y! msgr better, that’s all that’s needed. Those other programs are unauthorized and really they are just stealing yahoo’s time with advertising it seems to me, it makes no sense that yahoo would allow those programs to connect to their servers. They should alter their system with a plan to have y! msgr be the only program that can work on it.
Comment by chatter_chatter_chatter — July 28, 2007 #
I too find it annoying that the chat button is no longer on the top of y messenger.
I have to say that I’ve seen a huge decrease in the number of real people in the rooms, guessing this is a big reason! Why do you want to kill chat until it’s nothing but bots? Yahoo doesn’t want new blood in the chat rooms?
I’ve heard alot of people talking in the chat rooms that are still there about most of the people that used to chat in yahoo moving to other chat sites like pal talk and awc chat just because no real people are in the chat rooms anymore and the fact that now there’s only generic nontopical rooms since they did away with the user rooms.
If I had two wishes that the yahoo Gods could grant I would wish for a chat button on messenger again and the ability to create user rooms again with actual interesting topics, seriously who want to talk in “chat lobby” or “the hot tub”? lol
I know the reason behind getting rid of the user rooms but come on, how hard is it to employ 3 people to work in 8 hr shifts to go through and delete the bad rooms once every hour or two? At least when the user rooms were there you knew to stay out of rooms with names like “pedophile” or “sick perverted animal sex freaks”. Now the people that used to congragate in there troll the supposed normal rooms so you get pm’d by them where they left normal people alone before.
Plus, wouldn’t it be easier for law enforcement to nab these freaks if they were in rooms with names like these instead of all spread out in “chat lobby” or “20’s Love” rooms?
Hell I know lots of people out of work that would gladly monitor user rooms for a measly $6 an hour.
Surely with the traffic you would bring back to yahoo chat you could justify paying something as little as $6 an hour?
I’m just waiting for the day when someone with the money and skills creates a similar chat site to Yahoo with the features people miss to put the final nail in yahoo chat’s couffin. Will be sad but not undeserved.
Comment by iabullrider — July 30, 2007 #
I am not only a long time user of Yahoo, I was a beta tester before it was Yahoo. I also now pay for DSL via Yahoo and I am frankly pissed at how chat has degenerated. As a paying customer, one of the Yahoo services I pay for is chat, along with Yahoo mail and messenger. Fully 80% or better of chat users are actually porn bots and this is beyond belief. Does Yahoo want to lose more advertising revenues or more public humiliation due to what is going on in chat? Does Yahoo’s business strategy include driving off users and customers as well?
I would respectfully suggest Yahoo focus on fixing their services or the natural process of business will be the end of Yahoo.
Comment by Bruce — July 31, 2007 #

Its one thing to say you’re doing some work on your program. But after having a chat service for beyond 10 years now, surely you can do upgrades and updates without shutting the entire system down. If not, do it at after midnight, that’s how a lot of chat clients manage upgrades. Between the battle of the bots for the past couple of years and these ridiculous hours of downtime, you guys are definately losing your edge.

it was well, if they are unable to fix the problem, they keep trying a new way to overcome, better analise the problem and find a solution for it.
Better we can join together to create a chat room like this, to break the monopoly or we can get in to MSN or SKYPE.
And the yahoo employees are paid alot, They are happy, the users are on their own fate and luck.

First and foremost, and mentioned with COUNTLESS other comments… Stop whining! Its a free service. I could understand if you paid $15 or more a month for it, but you don’t. They fix their issues as fast as they can. Remember the older versions of Messenger? Like version 6? They were patching that almost every week!
I use Yahoo Messenger. I use YahElite. I use Yazak. I use YaHaven. And you know what? They all suffer from the same issues. The problem is not Yahoo, its the freaking morons who constantly plague Yahoo with new booters/laggers/mic-lockers, etc.
Its not something Yahoo can stop. There will always be people who are going to break apart code and find the vulnerabilities. Look at Microsoft Windows. And that’s something you PAID for. Then you have to go and PAY for Antivirus. And firewall, and Antispyware. And then what? Every year you have renew your subscriptions. More money down the hole.
I salute you, Yahoo, for trying your best. I will be the first to admit that I use to program booters, but that got lame and old quickly. We’ll always be around, its a fact of life. But keep on your toes! There is much work you’re doing – I’m sure it taxes your nerves.
Thanks Jeff for keeping us updated. I’m sure when the issues are fixed (or at least stable), the laud and praises will be worth the pain and agony you guys have been through.

Whether you love or hate Yahoo, chat is still shut down at this time. It seems the servers needs more tweaking. I wonder if the bot problem had been taken care of, would the servers need to be upgraded? Or would the existing servers have still been operating good with the enormous load removed. This appears like it is a treatment without searching for a cure.

Does Yahoo get money from the bot-sites for the hits from the yahoo rooms? Is that why they allow the bots to remain rampant?

To concerned chatters.
I found out that Yahoo is not fixing and not going to fix their chat room problems. It is a sign of the times for Internet companies.
Chat is the lowest possible prioitiy for Yahoo. They have not publicly gone the way of MSN but will do so eventually.
Chat is a problematic issue for them from passive pornograhpy support to pedafile issues. It generates very little income directly or indirectly and therefore is on the chopping block.
While MSN was willing to stand up and just say we are done and end free chat Yahoo has not been so willing to be public about it.
You can tell that the service is not going to be fixed by the amount of deradation to service, change of service (dropping parts of chat) with no obvious improvement or service.
So enjoy what is left while it is left.
The question is .. will there be any good and free chat left anywhere on the Internet since chat is problematic and does not generate enough income?
Time for us to either pick up our cell phones to say hi to a human being or heaven forbid.. saying hi to the neighbors!

This is the reason why it sucks. Assholes like this that yahoo you are letting ruin it for everyone else. This is clearly someone that simply fears they will no longer be considered “L33T” because their virtual sandbox might get locked up.
“COUNTLESS other comments… Stop whining! Its a free service. I could understand if you paid $15 or”
Not much point in having it, free or paid, when it’s not working like it should is there? If chat rooms are locked up and people cant get mic time as they’re supposed to, then it might as well not even exist. And the only reason those exploits still exist is that it is in fact free.
“I use Yahoo Messenger. I use YahElite. I use Yazak. I use YaHaven. And you know what? They all suffer from the same issues. The problem is not Yahoo, its the freaking morons who constantly plague Yahoo with new booters/laggers/mic-lockers, etc.”
Most people don’t need or won’t have an interest in trying those other programs if msgr and yahoo’s servers worked as they should for chat, and msgr is all most people will ever need. People will use whatever is easiest, period.
And excuse me..lol it IS yahoo are you on crack or something? Yahoo is the reason booting can still exist, and no other reason. Yahoo doesn’t
authenticate on someone’s ignore list properly server side and allows extraneous packets to be sent to a user id whether they want it or not. If they blocked packets and let them simply fall into the bit bucket as they should be doing for untrusted sources. And by doing so, not only are you or the other morons (and btw thanks for calling yourself a moron since you admitted to doing this as well), breaking the law, yahoo is as well by allowing the data to go through even if the user doesn’t want it.
“Its not something Yahoo can stop. There will always be people who are going to break apart code and find the vulnerabilities. Look at Microsoft Windows. And that’s something you PAID for. Then”
hahaha. Omg yes they can prevent it. You are trying to draw parallels where they don’t exist. Just b/c ms winblows can get a virus or a trojan or code may have vulnerabilities doesn’t mean yahoo has to allow multiple names and extraneous packets on their server. In all cases the data is going through yahoo and back to the clients. You aren’t sending data directly to the person at all, yahoo is doing it for you. If they authenticated on user’s ignore list as they should be doing, none of that would be possible. And as far as the chat goes, sure there can always be the rogue bot that makes it’s way through, but whole rooms locked up with no data comming in or going out, that would be rather easy to detect.
You go try to boot people off of the paid for services and screw up the experience for them, and see how far you get lmao. If there were vulnerabiltiies, they’d be fixed rather quickly. Face it, you got lucky with your booting and yahoo exploits because yahoo wrote most of this stuff quite some time ago and had a bad design in the first place, and didn’t care enough since it’s free to make it work better.
Comment by Make yahoo bot moderators — July 31, 2007 #
They do care about it, as it helps to initiate the revenue for their other services. After chatting on yahoo, many people look into, even if they dont purchase, one or more of yahoos other services. But you are right, Yahoo is in the middle of the connection and can therefore filter out undesirable packets, detect if the same packet is being sent to the same name from different proxies, same packet type being sent from one ip. Now the bots in the rooms will have to be handled differently. The different types of bots…You have porn bots, trivia bots, spam bots, room locker bots, voice iggy bots. To cut down on a program that loads may bots into a room, the Captcha would definitely slow it down at least enough to where just any old moron couldnt download a program and do it…There are ways around it, but your average joe would be lost. And people that pay for yahoo services chat as well…doesnt matter if chat itself is free…as a paying Yahoo customer, they expect for all the services to work properly and with as little problems as possible.

How many blogs does this guy have? He abandoned the original one (http://blog.messenger.yahoo.com/blog/2007/05/25/chat-rooms-state-of-the-union) and now he is promising the same things on this one? I jjust log in to see how far he will fling the bull***t, looks like it’s pretty far. The only explanation I can think of is they broke chat and have no idea how to fix it.
How about make it so we can get into chat to start? Then work out who is a bot and who isn’t. I have been a member for 7 years, you can be pretty sure I’m not a spam bot. I haven’t been able to get into a room for months now (well it worked for 2 nights and then broke again). But the bots don’t seem to have problems logging in. Nice job… in reverse..

I would gladly pay for Yahoo chat but they can’t charge for it until it actually works.
I am a member of paltalk at $35 a year. I have never had a problem logging in and I have never seen a spam bot in there. if Yahoo could provide the same quality of service they could easily make money on it.
Why are they trying to re-invent the wheel here. Just do what Microsoft does, copy someone else’s idea and make a fortune repackaging it. Thats the new business model for American companies… go with the flow..

To the Yahoo Staff:
I am sure tired of this chat messenger not working along with many others that are sick of this site not operating right. Week after week, month after month, year after year, all we hear is we are trying to improve things so we chat lovers can enjoy our stay here. How can that be possible, when one we can’t get ito the rooms half of the time, or play games on here because the games never load up or the mic gives u a little time to talk and cuts u off? How do u claim this is enjoyment? To me and many others that use this site are so sick of the so called promises, that never seems to get better as one guy said on his comment. But instead gets worse and worse by the minute. I, myself have been on here many years. Last year was the same issue. Now it’s 2007, and guess what, the issue is the same as it was back in 2006. What gives here? Got a solution, seems the staff u have on there is not helping the matters get corrected. So what I see here, time to find someone else that can get this up and running the correct way and also solve once and for all this issues. Like one major issue, WHERE WE ALLLLLLL CAN GET INTO ANY CHATTTTTTT ROOOMS WE WANT. Not saying u won’t have minor issues here and there. But come on now. This is Ridicolous. This matter should have been straighten out months ago or even 4 that matter, like last year. Why make updates to yahoo when the 7.0 doesn’t work and now the 8.0 isn’t even any better. To me, it’s useless and I know many others in here agree with me as well. Hurry and get this running. We have waited long enough…. Too long that is.

YOU have caused so much aggravation and wasted so much of the time of so many people. You make promises and utterly fail to keep them. Your patrons BEG you for just a freakin’ scrap of information about the problem for MONTHS, and you just ignore them. Now you claim yet again that the fix is forthcoming; why on earth should any of us believe you for second? YOUR CREDIBILITY IS AT ZERO. If you were a bricks-and-mortar storefront, you’re customers would have burned it to the ground out of sheer frustration at your ineptitude.

I’m sure this post will get removed since it is not exactly on topic. Has anyone at Yahoo noticed that whenever there is a blog about messenger/chat, there are over 100 comments posted by users, whereas, blogs about emoticons (or almost anything else) generate only a fraction of the responses? I think this shows what is most important to the majority of Yahoo users. Fix chat, release a Vista and a Mac version of messenger that actually works, get rid of bots… well you know what we all want and it isn’t new emoticons or some other “feature” that people don’t want or use.
To sarai, That is one heck of a flame you have posted. LMAO

We simply want a working chat arena, with little abuse included, and to be INFORMED when you are working on it so we are AWARE not to try to get into a chat room. This past week you have Obviously been taking servers off and on, and we just become frustrated at the lack of communication to us.
Yes, Chat on Messenger is Free, however, it also generates yahoo searches and purchase power to your company. In essence, making us customers who are being ” abused” in our own right.

‘Today, Yahoo! Inc. is a leading global Internet communications, commerce and media company that offers a comprehensive branded network of services to more than 345 million individuals each month worldwide. As the first online navigational guide to the Web, http://www.yahoo.com is the leading guide in terms of traffic, advertising, household and business user reach. Yahoo! is the No. 1 Internet brand globally and reaches the largest audience worldwide. The company also provides online business and enterprise services designed to enhance the productivity and Web presence of Yahoo!’s clients. These services include Corporate Yahoo!, a popular customized enterprise portal solution; audio and video streaming; store hosting and management; and Web site tools and services. The company’s global Web network includes 25 World properties. Headquartered in Sunnyvale, Calif., Yahoo! has offices in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, Canada and the United States.”
I found this quote on the history of Yahoo site “http://docs.yahoo.com/info/misc/history.html”
Notice NO WHERE in this excerpt or anywhere else on this page will you see the word “chat”. Yes, Corporate Yahoo does offer messenger and though I don’t know MAY offer chat that is as close as it gets.
Yahoo does not care about chat, never has never will. If you notice most of the advertisements that you guys (other posters) speak of are Yahoo related, mostly Yahoo Personals. And with many other aggressively marketed dating sites I find it hard to believe they make enough revenue off chat marketing to make it worth putting much effort into it.
I do not like to type chat, I think to much gets lost in translation and I have search and searched for another voice client. I have found none worthy. Yahoo has a great tool.
To the powers that be. I have an idea. I dont think this wil actually work due to the fact if it did you would be doing it yourself. Sell the chat portion to someone with an idea of how to make it work AND make money, not just generate site traffic so you can boost your hit count and charge more for advertising.
Or just sell the chat client to other sites so they can use your tools on their sites.Yes, your client is that good WHEN it works. I chat at many other sites, usually very small rooms and usually Java or Flash based, horrible. I always direct people I want to chat with to Yahoo (which no longer has private rooms) and though hard to get everyone in, does still offer conferences which everyone can be invited to.
Without a doubt my long winded message will go unanswered as countless others have (I have only seen ONE response and it covered 2 posts) I felt I had to put in my $.02. (Though I think I am up to at least $.05 now)
Hope to get at least a reply telling me to get lost,
Kip

I think this whole thing has gotten out of hand and gone off on so many tangents that’s it’s become quite ridiculous.
As one poster said, the spammers, botters, and hackers have been around since day one. Also what another poster said about them not going away is true as well. A good hacker will always find a way around any ‘roadblock’. If they want into your computer or want your account bad enough, they will get it, it’s that simple.
So why can’t yahoo stay ahead of the game? Simple, look at how overwhelmed the anti-malware industry is with keeping up with new malware. You might think they should be able to stay one step ahead but with the thousands of variants of malware out there and the fact that it changes daily, all they can do is basically play catch up.
The fact is no matter where you go on the internet, there will be dangers. That isn’t going to change and people need to get smart about avoiding it. This means doing your homework. The computer companies can’t be constantly babysitting those who don’t know anything about their machine or the internet. They expect you to know this or to learn it for yourself. There are many ways of doing this. Classes at school or doing your own research through search engines, or getting a book from the library, etc. Bottomline on this point is to educate yourself.
Next I think we have to be careful in grouping the makers of 3rd party apps into one category. Just because their apps are being used with mischief in mind doesn’t mean that that was what their creators intended. Many of them just wanted a better way of blocking the mess that goes on in Yahoo Chat. By the way, there have been 3rd party chat clients for yahoo from the beginning as well, though most were unknown until just a few yrs ago. Do people use Y!mLite, Yahelite, Yazak, etc for bad purposes? Sure. Do people use the internet for bad purposes? Absolutely. Does this mean that we just group all websites as and web administrators as mischieviants? Of course not, that’s absurd. So we can’t do the same thing to the authors of apps just because someone uses them with mal-intent.
Lastly, Yahoo is trying to do something about it, late or not, they are trying. They have asked for more programmers and everything. Have they done everything perfectly? No, and neither does anyone else. Many of you will say they’ve been given too much slack. Maybe this is true, but for a minute think about the immensity of the problem they are trying to overcome. It may seem fairly simple to you, but even the smartest people can’t see the future in 20/20. They will always be playing catch up to some new vulnerability. NO PROGRAM IS 100% BULLET PROOF. You may get it to 99.9% that way, but it will never be 100%.
As far as whether Yahoo supports the bots as some have suggested, I think we should be careful what we accuse someone of. Unless you have concrete evidence of such accusations, you should becareful to make sure that everyone is aware it is your opinion, because otherwise it is slander and illegal. No, I’m not taking sides here, I’m just trying to be objective which I think has been lost because of the emotions involved in all this.
Yahoo, you have said you are listening, and are trying to prove it. We await the final result, but please remember that patience isn’t something that lasts forever and eventually will run out. I hope that you are able to hire good programmers and that you are able to astound us with the work you have done. This will be good for you, for your advertisers and finally, for us, your loyal users who have continued to use your services despite the problems.
One final thought, someone mentioned that Yahoo planned to make chat a pay service. If this is true, then why would they bother in making an update? They could just make a totally new service and make it one we have to pay for. Despite the number of bots in the chatrooms, there are still millions of users who use chat or who want to use chat but are tired of the problems. I’m sure Yahoo realizes this and along with our ‘nudges’ is trying to rectify the problems.
Keep us updated Yahoo, and users lets try to stay objective. Everyone knows the problems, including Yahoo, let’s continue to offer solutions.
Comment by Jon — August 2, 2007 #
Ok, so everyone is upset with the way Yahoo Chat is right now and Yahoo doesn’t seem to want to put much effort into it.
Yahoo is the only game in town now really so everyone that wants to actually chat in a free chat room is pretty well out of luck. Why not do something about it instead of sitting around waiting for Yahoo to do something or waiting for someone like Google to make a chat site?
Myself and some others have decided to make a go at creating our own free chat site like Yahoo used to be with the ability to create your own user rooms again, the domain should be online in a day or two but until then you can get info on it at http://www.mqins.com/oohyachat.htm
We’ve waited 2 years now for Yahoo to get chat back to a usable status but have done nothing but drive users away so let’s seriously do something about it, if Yahoo wants out of the chat game then we’ll make a new one!
Comment by iabullrider — August 2, 2007 #
Jon,
No one wants or is even asking for this serviece to be 100% bullet proof, just an up time of 50 or 60% would be nice.
As far as the bots and spammers go, I use Yahelite as well as messenger. I have not problems with bots at all in either client. Yes, I am aware that booters and others with malisious intent can get by the features in both clients to boot you but as far as the porn (and other) bots I never get messages from them. Works perfectly. IF the bad guys do boot me, what does it take about 5 seconds to log back in, oh wait it USED to take 5 seconds, now it is very possible to take 5 hours.
I am not a programmer, though I know just enough to get into trouble. They had a working client, They broke it. It is that simple. I work for a company that has worlddwide operations and requires real time messaging capability. We tried Yahoo, though it was MUCH easier to use we had no choice but to use Quicktime. For those of you not familiar with Quicktime, it is a client based on Lotus Notes. This system had no where near the capability of Yahoo Messenger however it had one HUGE advantage, It worked 99.9% of the time. In fact I am not aware of one instance that it went down. I say this only because I know we did not have millions of users but that should not be the issue here, networking around the globe should be, adn if they can do it, Why can’t Yahoo.
As I said in my previos post the fact remains that Yahoo does not now, nor did it ever care about this client. I can go on and on with examples to show this point. One being, if they actually cared they would stop pushing everything towards a web based client. They want messenger to go away, people using there services via a stand alon client does NOTHING for their hit count. Web based clients do. But think back just a few years, they got rid of their web based chat, Java.
Yahoo Profiles have become all but useless now that they are pushing Flickr, which by the way is harder to figure out than stereo instructions, IN RUSSIAN!
While other sites are pushing integration for services Yahoo is dividing them. Yes they are in the top 5 for hits with Myspace, Google and AOL up there as well.
OK, I am babbling now but in closing I would like to add that you say These posts are getting off topic, I disagree. These posts are not only on target but every one of them is relevant. Yahoo Chat programmers do not listen to anything their users say. IMHO they think they know what we want without out listening to us. And that is made apparent by their lack of communication with us, the users that care enough to give them feedback, as you can see by the lack of responses they don not listen.
I will suggest something else. Why not get a group of up to a few hundred intelligent users (Sorry, “Yahoo sucks and I am never gonna come here again” does not count) and actually have a dialog with them. Hell, maybe there is one and everyone here is just not smart enough to find it or to get invited..lol.
And yes, though I have no proof whatsoever, I think ad bots are a source of revenue for Yahoo. If they aren’t….They should be! However with that being said, this IS a pay service, it is paid for by advertisers.
Ok Enough babble for on day
Kip
PS, I did not correct misspelled words…sue me

Bullrider,
Most of what makes Yahoo Chat possible is the amount of users. Yahoo began as a portal, and only because of this it had enough potential users to create a diverse crowd. Without that it would be impossible to re create, especially since Yahoo was started before the marketers realized that vast potential of the internet, now no one will touch virtual space unless there is a profit angle.

damn, i wish the posts here were made by people who have yahoo experience. ( been here since 99′) Since few weeks ago, ive noticed servers are much faster to move around the rooms which makes it alot easier to chat. There are also hourly lags of chat which happen 4-5 times a week, but im hoping that happens due to yahoo testing their new servers and only in the summer. The 30 second mic limit is great..people cant stand voice chatters who hog the mic, please dont change it….Removing the porn bots is a good idea since the rooms hold maximum of 50 people…….and about the bots that people load….What is your plan to take care of them? Removing the ability of socks proxies would take care of that but i doubt yahoo wants to remove that…on the other hand, since there are only 50 chatters in the room, why not limit the voice server 50 chatters per room also? That would work the best. and if you wanted to stop the booting, if yahoo programmers changed 1 line of code weekly in the protocol…….yahoo exploits wouldnt work and script kiddies would stop bothering to write new booters everytime. Thanks for your current faster servers.

That was a god point someone made about not using Yahoo Store. It has never even occurred to me to shop (or do anything besides chat) using Yahoo services. That includes search and even reading the news on their webpage.
After seeing their technological capabilities fail so miserably with a simple chat room there is no way I’m giving these bozos access to my credit card or other personal information.
Comment by paddler — August 3, 2007 #
First off, I don’t know who the “technical genius” is who bashed me, but for the record… Your pompous display of technical knowledge, more precisely the lack there-of only goes to show that you know jack about anything. You tried to derail everything I said but nothing you said made any sense logically.
First and foremost, Yahoo’s authentication will always be hacked. If there are people out there who hack authentication servers for more important types of software (like antivirus and firewall software that requires a valid PAID user id to update) then there are people who will hack Yahoo authentication. heck, there is already someone who has hacked the latest authentication protocol. and it took him less than a day.
So you’re saying that if Yahoo Chat was a paid service, it would still suck? I highly doubt that. I sincerely doubt that. What’s chat user base? In the millions? Lets do some math. $15/month per user is $180 a year. Times by, lets go with 2 million. that is equal to $360,000,000. I’m sure that with that kind of money in Yahoo Chat’s pockets, a lot more work could be done, in faster time, to produce excellent results.
And no, you’re the moron. Its not Yahoo. Take away the booters, the laggers, the bots, the spammers… and I’d guesstimate that 90% or more of the problems yahoo has faced would dissappear.
There is no law that says someone cannot examine code and find the flaws. If that were the case, a lot of white hats wouldn’t have a job.
BTW… I proved you wrong. I signed into my friend’s PAID aol account, went into chat and booted the hell out of 4 or 5 rooms. And ya know what? I claimed it in the room too. Ya know why? To prove you wrong. Nothing happened. No emails from AOL, no account deactivations. Nothing.
So… continue to jerk it while you think yer a genius. For the rest of us… keep faith that Yahoo is doing what they can. Oh yeah… To whomever suggested that a panel of intelligent Yahoo users get with yahoo and talk.. I’m game.

“First off, I don’t know who the “technical genius” is who bashed me, but for the record… Your pompous display of technical knowledge, more precisely the lack there-of only goes to show that you know jack about anything. You tried to derail everything I said but nothing you said made any sense logically.”
A pompous display of technical knowledge are people that writes VB code booters and thinks they know something all of a sudden. Visual Basic–the 4GL for noobs hahaha
You signed into AOL and were able to boot chat rooms and you think that proves something. That says it all right there. IT’S AOL. That doesn’t prove anything other than they have outdate crap themselves. And it’s AOL for crying out loud. Yeah by all means, AOL was the only one I was thinking about. AOL is about the poorest example there is and it’s well known that they have had bots and problems just like yahoo, and they don’t charge very much either. The old saying..you get what you pay for. There are plenty of others you wouldn’t get very far with. Go make an account on secondlife, imvu and paltalk. and when you’re able to boot everyone entirely out of those environments you pay yourself on the back then. Good luck too haha b/ you won’t get very far. The point is still valid. You got lucky with yahoo b/c their infrastructure and protocols are outdated and weak.
“First and foremost, Yahoo’s authentication will always be hacked. If there are people out there who hack authentication servers for more important types of software (like antivirus and firewall software that requires a valid PAID user id to update) then there are people who will hack Yahoo authentication. heck, there is already someone who has hacked the latest authentication protocol. and
it took him less than a day.”
Even if so, so what? That means that people can always be booted off their yahoo messenger so easily. I am not saying exploits can’t be found either in old software or new software, I am saying they are making it very easy to do it
“So you’re saying that if Yahoo Chat was a paid service, it would still suck? I highly doubt that. I sincerely doubt that. What’s chat user base? In the millions? Lets do some math. $15/month per user is $180 a year. Times by, lets go with 2 million. that is equal to $360,000,000. I’m sure that with that kind of money in Yahoo Chat’s pockets, a lot more work could be done, in faster time, to produce excellent results.”
No where did I say that? I’m saying if they adopted that they would have to change, b/c people won’t tolerate paying for a chat service only to not be able to get into it b/c it’s botted up. Or when they finally do, they get booted out either by a room boot or sending tons of packets to their ID’s. And that’s why you won’t be booting someone so easily on those other paid sites that have better designs and invested more. Your AOL validation is a piss poor example. And it’s AOL for crying out loud.
“And no, you’re the moron. Its not Yahoo. Take away the booters, the laggers, the bots, the spammers… and I’d guesstimate that 90% or more of the problems yahoo has faced would dissappear.”
I’m not the one that wasted their time writing booters am I? hahaha. Take away the booters and etc and all of it would disappear–yes exactly. That is obvious. But that isn’t happening right now, and it won’t happen until they revise things on their end. The booters, botters and hackers don’t have access to server side code, they are making a udp or tcp connection just like anyone else. Yahoo is letting data be sent to anyone’s ID whether they want that data or not. If user “booter_bot” is not on my user list, and I set my preferences to ignore anyone not on my list, I don’t want to get packets from user “booter_bot”, get it? Not just IM’s, packets period. And that’s totally implementable too, as well as traffic shaping, tons of stuff can be done.
“There is no law that says someone cannot examine code and find the flaws. If that were the case, a lot of white hats wouldn’t have a job.”
Yeah code that you are in POSESSION OF. You don’t have access to yahoo’s server side code. Or do you? I have heard of a # of yahoo employees guilty of leaking things out and making money at yahoo’s expense. Are you one of these people? hmmmmmmmm? Just b/c their protocol is hacked and reverse engineered so that you or joe blow can connect to yahoo with rogue booters doesn’t mean yahoo can’t fix it or entirely re-design things to not allow this booting and botting to occur.
“BTW… I proved you wrong. I signed into my friend’s PAID aol account, went into chat and booted the hell out of 4 or 5 rooms. And ya know what? I claimed it in the room too. Ya know why? To prove you wrong. Nothing happened. No emails from AOL, no account deactivations. Nothing.”
Yeah and as I already stated “IT’S AOL”. That’s why you were able to, it’s been known to have problems forever just like yahoo. And they’re practically begging for people to not leave their dialup accounts for quite sometime. Like I said, go try to pull your kiddie booting stuff on second life, there.com or paltalk and watch what happens when you just try to pull it off over a tcp or udp connection like what’s done with yahoo. Not that every service out there is 100% without their problems, but any problems will be quickly resolved.
“So… continue to jerk it while you think yer a genius. For the rest of us… keep faith that Yahoo is doing what they can. Oh yeah… To whomever suggested that a panel of intelligent Yahoo users get with yahoo and talk.. I’m game”
I’m not a genius and would be first to admit it. However I have over a 130 IQ and I’m not stupid either. And I work in IT (professionally) myself.
And the “intelligent yahoo users”–those are probably the ones that left already for the paid sites.

Looks like http://www.oohya.org has gone online, hopefully chat service will be up soon. Maybe a little competition will motivate Yahoo Chat a little, or maybe they’ll just let it die. Either way will be nice to have a new alternative to Yahoo Chat.

Well if Yahoo doesn’t want people using 3rd party programs like Yahelite or Yazak then the tech people at Yahoo should incorporate the features these programs have, like auto ignore, wildcard ignores, avatars, a knock feature so when a room has space you can get in, spam blocking, and stuff like that. I find those features on 3rd party chat programs superior to anything Messenger has and makes chat more enjoyable. If Yahoo was real serious about fixing Messenger then they should start incorporating these features. Another thing that is ticking me off too are the bots and clones. They can lock up a room to where nobody can get in all day. There was one chatter by the ID of zalim who was making up names with some kind of program who in 30 minutes came up with over 300 different variations of zalim, doctor iggy, jken, and beast2k..all from one person! I don’t know what kind of program he was using but he was deliberately flooding a room so nobody could get in. The only way I would go back to using messenger for chat rooms is if Yahoo would start incorporating all these features that 3rd party chat programs have and do something about the bots, cloners, and people who have programs that can create unlimitless names to flood a room.
Comment by John — August 6, 2007 #
Hi Jeff:
what I think you people at Yahoo need to do is instead of applying bandaids to fix Yahoo Messenger you need to come with a completely new program that incorporates the features from 3rd party chat programs like Yahelite and Yazak that outshine Messenger. Messenger needs to have what these programs have, like auto ignore, wildcard ingore, a knock feature that eventually will let you get into your favorite rooms, avatars that post in the room that makes it more personal, spam blocking, and things like that.
And what is wrong with yahoo? Seems trying to getting a room you might have to wait hours. And why does the chat servers seem to go down at the same time everyday….like around 12pm-3pm? And another thing, the bots, cloners, and spammers are driving people away from using Messenger and going to 3rd party chat programs that have features where you can ignore the people doing this without having to individually ignore each name one at a time.
Like I said earlier, Yahoo needs come up with a completely new chat program that incorporates all of these features that make 3rd party chat programs superior to Messenger. I really don’t think Yahoo cares and if Yahoo is talking about advertisers and revenue, by not fixing Messenger to where it works better they are losing potential customers because they are using other chat programs out of the frustration they are having with Messenger.
Comment by John — August 6, 2007 #
Fix chat. Allow 3rd party clients. These clients (ALL OF THEM) far outshine Yahoo Messenger with their ability to auto-ignore the spam. You’ve failed miserably so far with messenger.
Even without a 3rd party client, messenger TODAY is failing. The text munching is intolerable as is the DELAY.
Stop working on useless projects such as an “emoticon contest” and fix your chat issues.
I expect that sometime in the future you’ll be charging for chat. You’ll not get a penny out of me until you fix your problems while allowing the third party clients. Sorry, but the 3rd party clients have clearly demonstrated that they are far superior to yahoo messenger when it comes to chat issues.

I used Yahoo Chat in 1998; it worked great. It’s been an absolute nightmare for at least 5 years, and there don’t seem to be any viable alternatives. How hard could it be to restore it to its 9-year-old functionality?
Comment by AS — August 7, 2007 #
Hey guys. Hope that emoticon contest is going well. I know that’s super important. Oh and hey, thanks for the update on why spam is bad and that vital post about uh, different alerts you can choose to let you know you’ve received a message? I guess?
Oh by the by, not sure if anybody is concerned about this or not, but chat has been completely non-functional for at least the past three days and nights. Difficulty logging in. Interminable lag, which doesn’t matter that much anyway since most posts are eaten as soon as they are sent.
Now I understand that some people’s lives revolve around chat, and they’ll probably stick this out no matter what. For some of us, chat is just an occasional diversion and we’re probably going to keep trying to use chat rooms for a little while, then get bored and go do something else. A lot of us will probably just transfer the contacts we have on Yahoo messenger to Other Messenger Programs (there are, shockingly enough, OTHER OPTIONS for free messnger services and almost everybody has several different programs they use) and, you know, never use another Yahoo product again or even give Yahoo a second thought.
I’m not screaming. Not yelling. Not demanding that you fix the chatrooms right this very second or else I will hold my breath until I turn purple and THEN who’s gonna end up looking bad? Just saying that it’s going to be easier for some of us to stick around and maybe keep checking back in if we have some idea what on earth is going on and when it might be fixed. Or, you know, you could keep talking about really awesome emoticon design contests and ways to make the BUZZ! feature even more annoying and possibly hold a seance to determine a brand new color scheme for Messenger Version 8.0111090821990012, which will be exactly the same as all the others except the status of contacts will appear in little word balloons, as though their avatars are actually speaking the words.

The Flamers are the ones who are scared of yahoo getting rid of the bots… i think thats obvious… why would people complain that yahoo is going to stop all these script kiddies unless the were a script kiddy. You should also go after people selling programs that work on a FREE Service. Im sure markus and the others have broken the law by selling these programs… if you arent going to go after them the least you could do is shut down their sites when they come to your attention.
get rid of the socks yacscom login
fix yacscom so that there can only be as many voice chatters.. as there are text chatters
ban IPs that are known proxies
change the YMSG protocol WEEKLY or BIWEEKLY
Make your protocol verify that it is YMSG that is being used and not a third party client
i wont mind doing the verification code before i enter a chat room… however that wont stop botters. .it will just prolong their botting… the real losers will have all the time in the world to verify 400 bots .. and yes those losers are out there… look at everyone in CMB… and name one that has a job

Ok! this is getting old…..go into a room and nobody can see your posts at all! I thought the tech people at Yahoo were suppose to fix this? Not even fun chatting when nobody can see your posts and then you are missing over 50% of the posts! And then the rooms are so slow it takes 5-10 minutes just to see one post from somebody else.I was using Yahelite, Yazak, and Messenger all with the same problems. it was even worse in Messenger because nobody could see anything I was posting. so when are the Yahoo God’s suppose to fix this thing? Sometime in 2010? seems that way as slow was the tech people are. With the way Yahoo is messed up almost makes you want to give up on Chat until the God’s at Yahoo get the thing fixed. Seems everyday Yahoo Messenger keeps getting worse and worse. So where are all of these wonderful updates and fixes Yahoo keeps promising? Did they get lost in Cyberspace? Sorry for this post but this crap is getting real old and tech people can’t be that slow can they? seems they only work on it a couple of hours a day and then take the rest of the day off. Yahoo needs to get their act together and fast, not this slow pace….even the Federal Government works faster than the tech people at Yahoo!

Whatever yahoo’s problem is, it has gone on far beyond reason. One day this week I was able to actually log in. The rest of time was spent trying to log in. When I did get into yahoo chat on the one day there was an abundance of porn bots that seemed to have no problem getting into chat. There were several idiots filing the room with bots designed to annoy people and lock out the rooms. They have no problem getting into chat.
While I am on the subject .. lets not ignore the elephant in the room. The idiots with the bot locking out the room are claiming to be from egypt and are filled with hate as evidenced by their statements in broken English. They have no problem getting into chat.
Yahoo has been a mess since the beginning of the year with no word from yahoo as to a fix or anything else. Yahoo chat gets worse every day. It’s not a chat but rather an object of frustration.
Just to give the flamers a chance to mouth off about which they know nothing, I have used just about every chat client there is with some sporadic success depending on the temperature or the wind direction or maybe the price of rice in china. What ever the reason it wasn’t worth it.
As far as this user is concerned, I would love a list of yahoo staff responsible for yahoo chat .. They should be working for the bad guys where the damage they are doing is appreciated.

But seriously, chat really does fail these days.
And i mean..surely they’ve had long enough to fix this junk..
How many idiots does it take to pin down a problem and like..fix it?! ?My god. If yahoo! wants to make chat chargable then do so, but hurry up and fix the damn problems. I’ve used yahoo! for 3 years now, and i’ve seen a definite slow decline in it.
Surely they should see what we all see, and go back in time and do whatever was working for them then, because whatever they’re doing now, sure as hell isn’t working. Yahoo! is a very profitable business, and chat is a huge percentage of their annual profit due to advertisement etc. And i’m sure that many people would not continue to chat if it was made a payable thing. I know i probably wouldn’t. But eh whatever, i’ve had my moan or something…
Hurry up and fix chat, Yahoo! people…please? Pretty please?

so when is Yahoo going to fix this thing? I am getting real frustrated going into chatrooms and nobody can see my posts at all! I am having this problem not only on the other chat clients I am using like Yahelite, Yazak, and Y!mlite, but also on Messenger. This is getting real old where you go into a chat room and nobody can see your posts and if they do it takes like 5 minutes to post back to you. Seems Yahoo ought to either fix chat or get rid of it altogether since it seems they are not really interested in fixing it or we wouldn’t have to wait this long for the fixes. I am getting to the point were I am thinking about getting rid of Messenger all together.

Ok…..chat in text really sucks it takes 5 minutes to get into chatroom and the only active chatters r on voice. I use voice chat but im usually a typist. Here’s a hint: open a few chat clients, knock into the room with a couple of names and get in faster. Then get your friends on another service where they can type to each other without lag….and use yahvox to communicate on voice…I know how to get around this lag but most people won’t comply and i dont have time to babysit chatters. I agree its been going on for too long and hopefully in the next few weeks all problem will be solved, if not i am one of the chatters who look for new chat ( without moderation). I even have my own chat and a source code for voice module to upload…but whos gonna join an annonymous source with their ip being placed on their list…..Lets hope Yahoo does finish this….

Are you intentionally misleading people, or do you simply not use Vista and are parroting something you read somewhere? Virtual PC is not a solution. You apparently don’t know that VPC only will virtualize hardware if it is supported on the processor and there is no guarantee that everyone who goes through your two hour long process will meet success at the end. It does NOT work on my computer – I run Vista, and I did try that. I also tried Trillian, and apparently my sound card is not supported by that program. And as far as that TSP codec, it doesn’t work. It doesn’t work for 90% of the people who bother to try it.
Please stop misleading people and stop guessing at what a possible solution is, and definitely don’t try to tell me what solutions work.
There is no simple solution to this problem and Vista users are informed that if you try any of those solutions, save an actual Vista Messenger from Yahoo, you could very well be wasting your time.
A Virtual OS can’t access my sound card in a Host OS.
Stop spreading FALSE info.

Wow….lots of p**sed off yahoo chat addicts out there! I hope that yahoo can do something about these ongoing and worsening problems. They really are a pain. For ages it was the bots that got worse and worse, now it is a massive lag and dropped packets of text which is making chatting in a room un-usable…If you can even log into a room in the first place.
Here is the thing, everyone on my messenger buddy list I have met in chatrooms…No more chatrooms means no more need for yahoo messenger, means bad for yahoo’s business…I know that is how the majority of yahoo messenger users that I know feel.
There is talk of a mass e-exodus to some other stable chat client if the problem isn’t promptly dealt with…Yahoo are not doing themselves any favours, that is for sure.

Yahoo was suppose to fix chat today? you gotta be joking right? It seems as bad as it was last week! Go into chat rooms and people still can’t see your posts and the lag is still terrible. This is ridiculous. Yahoo has been broken for several weeks now. Just completely unusable. Stop doing first-run testing on the production servers. And Chris J, I agree. They should have a development server, a QA server, and then their production servers. Testing is a big thing. After developers finish the product, it should be handed off to the quality team, who should pound the shit out of it, but unfortunately, they prolly cant reproduce the amount of crap inflicted on their servers…They wont take anyone’s advice, they dont even know how to fix their own software or hardware. That’s obvious.
On another note, I’ve always wanted to develop software for medical needs and/or scientific labs and such. There are no jobs around here for that stuff though. Guess I’m gonna have to move to the big city…LOL..

JohnnyO…Vista is ok if you want an OS that is a total resource hog and runs terribly or not at all on the majority of people’s current hardware…It is great if you don’t mind being bullied by M$ into upgrading all your hardware for no good reason…Personally, there are no features in Vista that attract me in the slightest.
Seeing Ubuntu Linux running blazingly fast with Beryl 3d desktop and all sorts of effects with a mid range graphics card, 800Mhz CPU and 512mbs of ram and then seeing Vista running on the same machine and choking when all it was running was a calculator and solitaire… This makes Vista look like a joke and Apples Tabby cat OS or whatever it is called too…Seriously, it makes Vista seem like a really badly programed OS. I don’t know anyone that is planning to go to Vista in the foreseeable future.
Comment by John — August 15, 2007 #
JohnnyO….Most of us wouldn’t use Vista for the simple fact alot of us would have to buy new computers since Vista is a resource hog and you need to have all kinds of new hardware just to get Vista to run properly. Vista is just Microsoft being in collusion with Dell, HP, and others to force people to buy new computers. No Thanks, I will stick with XP until Microsoft no longer supports it. They would have been better off enhancing XP with all the Vista enhancements instead of creating a whole new operating system which hasn’t even received many good reviews. Even CNET and ZDNET and others are not very impressed with Vista. I don’t plan on getting Vista anytime soon.
Comment by John — August 15, 2007 #
Well, with new OS’s, you have to upgrade..when hasn’t that been true? I mean I use to run a gateway 2000 with windows 3.1, then windows 95…As technology advances, it is inevitable that you must upgrade your hardware…And I can run about 4 instances of Visual Studio 2005, Corel PaintshopPro, IE 7 with like 8 tabs or more open…and ………calculator. Im running on 1 GB Ram and Vista runs at about 53% of my Ram with all that running..Thats not including all the services in the back like IIS and Norton and all that crap.
And no they shouldn’t have enhanced XP…Thats lame…Why enhance an OS that already takes longer to run service packs and updates than it does to install the OS…LOL…
People if you have the money, upgrade or better yet, a full install, to Vista…After you get used to it you’ll love it. It is perfectly stable and not as bad on resources as some people make out. Don’t knock it till ya try it.

And yes Ive ran Linux…all grades from Fedora Core to Ubuntu(which I currently have one box running on) to some even smaller distro’s. Its true, Linux is nice. Especially with Beryl. But for the average user, its far too advanced. And not as Entertainment Oriented for home users as windows. Its harder to install programs and the compatibility of software is still lacking in many areas. There is WINE, which installs the core Windows dll’s and such and allows you to run win32 apps and such, but is still tougher for the average user to get it right. So why even compare Linux to Vista….they both have their uses…just like MAC…its main use is graphics, entertainment, etc…Vista has a little bit of everything, and is well worth it…

I have a totally new build now which would run Vista like a charm, I am sure, but the thing is that it runs XP flawlessly with no hassles and does everything I need it to do, the only problems I ever have are with badly programed applications…Which get stripped out as fast as they went in…I have all of the useless services stripped out of xp too and have the whole system optimized for what I need it for (audio recording) and have all the security holes patched up. I really couldn’t be bothered learning how to do the same with Vista (I take for granted that the flaws and useless features are there) and to be honest I see no advantage of upgrading to Vista at all.
As far as Ubuntu Linux, yes, it is a little advanced for the everyday general computer user…But then, so is XP if you actually want to tweak it to get the best performance from your hardware and software or use it for specific purposes…Then again, if someone set up an Ubuntu Linux system for the everyday user or they bought one pre-installed with all the applications that they would need or want, the issue of it being too complex goes away…With all the security worries and other headaches that come with windows…Plus, it is free!
Actually, if you can use google and follow instructions none of it is very hard at all…whatever OS you are using.
Getting back to the point….Yahoo suck pretty bad…lol

Just to add….I don’t think that people should be forced to upgrade their hardware to upgrade their OS…Our society is wasteful enough as it is and it seems like M$ are encouraging people to be more wasteful by forcing the hardware upgrades due to their lack of support for their current set-up.
If M$ were smart they would have undertaken a massive survey (Much like Valve software did through their Steam client) to find out what hardware their users are currently running and made Vista to run stable on the lowest hardware requirements (like Valve has done with their games) and if their hardware far exceeded these minimum requirements then additional features etc. would be available (again, like Valve has done). In this way they are not excluding anyone and they have an OS that would appeal to the widest demographic while people slowly adopted the new technology as the market caught up with the advanced features and latest developements, making them available to users when they are ready to upgrade…As opposed to what M$ have done, release an OS that forces most people to scrap their current build and most of their external devices (due to lack of support) and invest in the newest, most expensive devices/computer hardware…This is corporate bullying and very wasteful in my opinion.
I hear that they are stopping retail of XP at the end of the year…I think this is a terrible move and deliberately going against the publics wishes. All they are going to do is force people into Apple’s camp and further the developement of more user friendly Linux distros..Which is good for us, but very bad for M$.

Johnny O….you sound like a salesman for Microsoft the way you keep harping about Vista. Maybe you have the money to go out and buy a new computer with all the latest gizmos but most of us don’t have that kind of money to go out and buy a new computer with all the latest gizmos just because MS decides to change the OS. For most of us the computer we have was a big investment and MS should have taken that into account. I agree with John M. that MS should have done a survey and developed Vista around the bare minimum configuration instead of the way they did it and over half of the computers people have can’t even run it without making major investments in hardware upgrades or having to buy a new computer. I bought my computer in Dec 2006 and according to Circuit City it will only barely run the no frills version of Vista and barely at that. MS should have taken into account what consumers already have instead of creating a monster that requires extensive upgrades or getting a new computer just to run Vista properly. I hope MS falls flat on their face with Vista and teach them a lesson us consumers have the power, not MS!

Any new news? its almost another month since the last update. Are you getting close? How come the existing yahoo messenger / chat is sooooo unusable while all this is going on?
Comment by Disgruntled Yahoo Chatter — August 16, 2007 #
To return to the topic of Yahoo chat/messenger, today the rooms under Politics heading are 99.9% full of bots, you log in to one room and it takes you to another…..nothing is stable and each room is full to capacity of 50 people. Its a total mess. I am not compu-savvy like many, but to my mind the whole of chat has been hacked. I wonder if Yahoo is aware? Comments from those more techno minded are welcome.
Comment by maureen — August 16, 2007 #

Been chatting in politics lobby for 8 years – it is now totally unusable – bots have taken over every room – it’s a damned shame. I don’t like paltalk – but you have forced thousands of people to go there. What moron is responsible for this gawd-awful mess? How could you let it get so out of control? Someone needs to be beaten with small sharp sticks.

I read where the Yahoo management claims to want to stop the bots. Fine.
Treat this as a military jamming problem and apply a FFT on the signals coming from each log-in, compare those against the historical signals of known bots or even compare against those ignored by many people and that will ID the bots, since they are all emitted from one source with minor variations.
This can actually be done in real-time with a DSP array for much less than it costs to pay for the bandwidth and computational resources used up by the bots themselves!
Thanks,
Bob

I really love chatting in my politics rooms, but recently I havent been able to get in. Infact over 400 rooms completely full of bots, not allowing me even to go into my normal chat room where I converse with the people I liked to debate with. The fact is, Yahoo is being liberally homosexual about this chat room thing. Make me pay for bot free chatting, I’d pay. If this doesnt stop, I think I will just start selling off my yahoo stocks.

It’s not fair for yahoo to pick and choose what room we are sent to. Lots of us have made long time friends from one certain room and wish to continue chatting with them in the same room. Now we have to wait for rooms to get full so who knows where we all end up? That sucks!! And then once we do get to the room we are accustomed to the type does not show up and not all the room hears everyone else. Yahoo is a mess at the moment. Hope this will be corrected very very soon.

i think that the public should be more informed then they have been as to what exactly is going on to fix these problems…i had no clue there was a blog about this until all of 20 minutes ago..and it was posted almost a month ago..and i dont think forcing people to go to a room they don’t want to go to is a good fix..and i’m hoping its a temporary thing. i understand that these things take time..i just think that keeping people up to date with whats going on would help to calm everyone down. i suffered through the lag and disappearing text and it taking 15 minutes to get into a room quietly and with patience…but im not happy at all about being forced into rooms that i dont want to go in.

I am here reading this blog, and wondering why everyone is blaming Yahoo for actually posting the bots, I doubt they are posting these porn bots, and if they are, they are violating international and united states law.
What pisses me off is that there isnt another medium to chat. Why cant they just control these with a new protocal that only allows a specific client. Now I am forced to use another medium…
I just want to know which is the liberal responsible for this. Its not even as these millions ( and millions ) of name bots actually say anything.

Dude you dont own any shares in yahoo…lol…you thought that by saying that it would gain you a little ground…don’t count on it…And back to John….Man I payed 900 bucks for this laptop with Vista Home Premium. I didnt have to buy nuttin but the laptop itself. I opted to purchase a 3 year warranty on the computer itself which was about 1/4 of what I payed for the laptop. I am a software developer and I make ok money, but not enough to just waste on crap…To stay up with technology, I purchased a Vista ready laptop… So I can get used to it now…because guess what…In a couple years, when you are migrating to Vista and wondering how you fix things on it or how you set this up or how you access this or that, Im gonna be the guy in the forum helping you out…How do you think you get the rich content you see on certain websites…Technology…More and more programs are using WPF and the .Net framework…granted, .Net runs on xp, but sad to say, programs of the future are going to be too advanced to run on xp…Vista is a stepping stone…And who are you to try and persuade people to not learn a new technology, or try something new…CHANGE is CONSTANT, and INEVITABLE. Its up to you how you respond to change. I understand about not having enough money to upgrade…Thats cool…I truly understand that…thats a better excuse than going off of what youve heard from people that are afraid of change.

But dont sit here and post crap that youve read without knowing what youre talking about. You have no idea how much resources it uses, and as far as upgrading, what is the price of 1 GB of ram(actually 512 is the minimum, but Id suggest 1 GB)…What is the cost of a decent video card…Not too much…newegg.com, tigerdirect.com, even ebay offers these upgrades for very little. Now if you dont need these upgrades or couldnt benefit from them in anyway, then maybe you shouldnt upgrade. but if youre a gamer, or programmer, or heavy into media and entertainment and need powerful tools to get whatever you do on the pc done, then upgrading the hardware can only help…whether you opt to get vista or not. Its all based on what your pc time consists of..If its yahoo chat…as it appears most of you peoples pc time is spent, then no you wouldnt benefit. I myself do graphics and programming and need the speed and stability that upgraded hardware offers.
Comment by JohnnyO — August 17, 2007 #
And greg…how are you and your friends supposed to get together??? CALL THEM ON THE PHONE…HAVE A PARTY…GO OUT SOMEWHERE…GO ELSEWHERE!!!!!! LOL….Yahoo chat is not the only place to chill with friends…ITS CALLED…A REAL LIFE…GET ONE!!! And whats happening, is the servers are not responding with the room full packet, so they are throwing you in a room as a seat becomes available. They are not telling you ya cant try again in a few minutes…With the testing of their new fixes and servers, etc, etc. They are apparently having problems sorting shit out. It can happen. I mean they are just people…And they are running their business. And guess what they make mistakes…everyone does. Within the year, things will settle back down…Then a wave of new exploits will come…more fixes from yahoo, then it will settle down again…then more exploits…Its gonna happen with such a vast product line and so many users.
Comment by JohnnyO — August 17, 2007 #
If im not mistaken, thats how it worked about 4 years ago as well…They would toss ya in another room if the room you were trying to join was full..That is a sign that they are doing something other than just letting you wait and wait and wait to get into the chosen room…This is a sign of them doing something to resolve the problems…pm your friends and say hey i cant get in to Whatever Room:10, meet me in This Other Room:35….Geeez join a voice conference, but for cryin out loud stop whining.

It is a shame what yahoo has done to the sites and if what they are planning to what was said at beginning of this column they need to just tell us to get lost. Guess yahoo has gotten so big with all their other enterprises that simple chat rooms are bottom of lists. Who wants to be thrown in a room with a bunch of strangers. Chatters have certain rooms they go to to see old friends and listen to good music. It is a shame yahoo let things get so out of hand with them bots…they are not but prostitutes advertising their wares in the chat rooms and been getting away with it. It is the overrunning of bots that has messed up our chat rooms with them allowed to take over as they have. A room has 45 ppl in it and only maybe 10 are actual ppl and rest bots. We want a clean nice chat room as we used to have a few years ago and if yahoo could do it then they can do it now. Only problems with overload as they say are letting the rooms be overloaded with bots. Let us pick the rooms we want to go to. Only certain number can go to them anyways but they do not need as many rooms as there were. 100 rooms to select from are plenty for sure but do not tell us we can not go to our rooms we are used to and throw us in with a bunch of strangers. We go to our rooms we do because we feel comfortable there and we respect each other and feel pretty safe in them certain rooms. Yahoo fix the mess not make it worse please.

RE Langill, and Greg you mentioned Freedom of Choice and Yahoo in the same sentence. That concept does NOT exist to Yahoo’s clients. Just ask Shi Tao who was imprisoned after Yahoo turned over his name to the Chinese government on trumped up charges. This is an indication what you are dealing with at Yahoo; people who could care less as we have seen even their responses to complaints about their service.
let’s see their response to what Bob Kemp stated?
Unhappy chatter I concur with your points made!

Ho Hum, like we believe anything that is said. The great shame is that yahoo chat (as a medium) was nice and simple to use, and was fairly enjoyable to begin with. You could meet all sorts of people and have some great chats. (this also encouraged me to use other parts of yahoo)
Over time, the tech jockies got invoved and the commercial butts – so, lets flood the room with porn bots to get extra revenue and, lets play ‘upgrade’ and p[iss even more people off.
Oh, and by the way we earn no money for chat so lets ignore it and the people will piss off – but they forget…….. yahoo chat attracted a lot of people who then used more of Yahoo. Since my yahoo chat has gone down I have not visited of used yahoo in hardly any way so, potential lost income has become a reality. now multiply that by millions and the effect can be greater.
People are sick of being lied to, ignored, made to feel idiots, patronised and all. Sure we know that there are never easy fixes for everything but in the same voice if it took this long to get a working unit up and running in the real workd of business and finance – Id be broke !
It is clear that yahoo has lost the plot when it comes to servicing people – but, even more interesting they have lost the niche they had developed…………
Ho hum, there are many more we can use. Get rid of the non english speakers flooding the rooms and the porn bots – and give us back our chat !
Comment by SdB — August 19, 2007 #
you can connect with friends that is using ICQ, AOL, and Yahoo thru PalTalk and just forget about Yahoo. Don’t hold your breath waiting for Yahoo to do anything just do for yourself and try other chat formats.
Comment by mr nice guy no more — August 19, 2007 #
Pal Talk is not as good as yahoo chat because you only get a 10 second free video sample of someone’s webcam and after 10 seconds the video stops on its own. To get unlimited webcam viewing thru pal talk you must upgrade to their paltalk plus for 1 Year $39.95 – $3.33/month or their other plan the x treme for1 Yr.$59.95-$4.99/mo Save 65%!
1 Month x-Treme $14.95 . But the rooms are free of bots and its nice to chat with real people. Do you all think this is something that maybe people will pay if Yahoo becomes a paid chat service for webcam viewing. You can chat for free at pal talk but pay for the webcam service.
Comment by mr nice guy no more — August 19, 2007 #
Man.
I see you can now use yahoo! chat..but you cannot chose which room you chat in?..How ridiculous is that?
You cannot go to a room of your choice but instead, get taken to the first room that is not full. So you have to sit there in a room full of bots, saying absolutely nothing? This is totally unacceptable, and i will not be using yahoo chat anymore. I have used it for a while now, and it was at first a joy to use when there was nothing else to do. I am disappointed at yahoo!s lack of help, and lack of understanding for people who only use yahoo! chat as a means to talk to friends overseas. I guess i shall now try pal talk. The rest of what i have to say is, i’m afraid.. censored

If Yahoo will not do anything about the bots I can see they will get in trouble like they did with the user rooms with the bots with underage chatters. Yahoo must like having to deal with all these legal problems with porn bots going to public rooms that underage people also use. I tried to get into a room and one of the porn bots tried to get me to view their webcam and I keep telling her no and even had to tell the porn slut what part of no she didn’t understand before I finally had to ignore it and mark it as spam. Yahoo needs to fix the Porn Bot problem before they end up in court for exposing underage chatters to explicit material. But like Yahoo is going to do anything about that? Not on your life….

Here’s a list of some suggested improvements:
1) use some type of encryption on the client so no non-yahoo clients can be used.
2) Fix mouseover so it shows city/state/real name and REAL country.
3) Add a feature that would allow us to filter IMs so they’ll only come from countries we want. I for one have no use for IMs outside the US – most are spam or people I have no interest in talking to.
4) Allow people to report suspected “bot profiles” that just link to “my REAL web sites” or stuff.
5) Have an EASY TO FIND suggestion/complaint button on Messenger. And have it monitored.
Those would be good starts.
Comment by Jack S — August 19, 2007 #
Another suggestion – look for volunteers to assist with rooting out the “bot” profiles and users in the chat rooms. When someone reports them, disable the accounts as soon as it becomes obvious that it’s a bot.

I am willing to pay for the Yahoo service if…
1. you get rid of the bots.
2. stop the lag.
3. stop the IMs from unwanted people
4. stop playing around with room numbers and limits on users per room….
If and only when yahoo can guarantee these things then I will be willing to pay a moderate fee to use yahoo Chat.
And I am sure there are lots of others that will be willing also.
It may clean the place up and allow yahoo to make the revenue they so desire… I doubt the bots will
pay for a subscription for each name they have out there at the moment..
Yahoo has become a total mad house…and its so sad to see..I am a long time user of Yahoo Chat ..almost 10 years now and I have never seen anything like this…
Come on Yahoo get your act together and let us all resume the fun times we have had chatting to amazing people from around the world that we would otherwise never have had the chance to know…

It seems that all the improvements only makes it harder for friends to get together in the room they have chosen. I you can no longer join the room of your choice until the lower number rooms are full isn’t an imporvement. So sometimes it is better to good back to the old and work to improve that. NOT CHANGE it.
Thanks for your time

yahoo says its going to fix it so that there will be less bots… well where’s the fix ?? have you people at yahoo ever tried to get in a room lately ?? where’s the login verification we’ve all been hearing about to help stop the bots… yahoo allows the bots to get in the rooms first which inturn makes it totally imposible to get in any room, let alone the room you want to go to… heres a question for you people at yahoo.. does yahoo make money off the bots advertising in the rooms ?? .. if so .. so be it.. i know all companies have to make monies to maintain services even free services like yahoo chat… but if not… than why are they even in chat.. im betting there will never be a bot free yahoo chat .. what good are the bots for advertising if no one can get into a room to even see them.. – to funny – like everyone… im hoping and waiting for the BIG YAHOO CHANGE

if yahoo had any sense they would add chat room access to yahoo messenger for mac os x. version 3.0 beta is just the old 2.53 with some eye candy and group conversation capabilities – BUT – no access to yahoo chat rooms at all. i really think it should be along the lines of version 7.0+ for wintrash.

Been watching the daily death of yahoo chat – just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, – I checked today – and it is so screwed up it’s not worth checking anymore. Ya know, If you get on the 3rd or 4th step and then jump to the floor – you might just be able to pop that head out of your ass long enough to hire someone who knows wtf they are doing to fix this mess. I was mighty pleased to see my new flash post on the death of yahoo was censored.. Wow such an honor. Rather than respond with something positive about yahoo chat and what may be going on with it yahoo censors comments that don’t beg to have the rooms fixed but rather call things the way they are.
The sad part of all this is, yahoo has failed to turn me in to the Chinese Gov. I want the full Monte here guys … If you have time to censor this idiotic self serving blog then you have time to let people know what is going on.
The truth is, I really don’t give a rats behind what yahoo does but had to comment on on the censorship when a comment fails to serve the criteria of begging and pleading with yahoo for a word about what it is they have in mind.

Comment by Terri — August 21, 2007 #
I agree with Barb. If Yahoo is still seeking paid services….yahoo must ensure that no malicious person(s) is able to send “packages”…crash a pc…send viruses, etc that such undesirables do. I have some friends who have had their pc’s attacked by a malicious person and cost them more than $100’s to repair the damages. And those who do such are to have their pc’s tagged with an undeleteable cookie that does not permit them to have a yahoo id “permanently”. I remember the days when a person would ill behave….generally all was needed is the use of profane language…..those undesirables would be banned from all chat rooms for a determined time.
Like tripod….all I get is *****room ERROR: Joining Romm Trying Again…..what is this???!! And now I have no voice cookie….it’s getting worse ‘n worse. *Holds large mallet over yahoo chat & thinks about “Press any key to continue”…!!!

I have only this to say we chatters made Yahoo a valuable company. We used their E-mail services, their search engines et etc. Yes the chat is free but that was a plus we enjoyed with everything else Yahoo came with. Now it seems like there are Mickey Mouse fixes to simple problems. Your so called engineers have made things worse the more they supossedly worked on it. DON’T TRY TO FIX SOMETHING THATS NOT BROKEN!!! Yahoo Chat was fine before. I knew something was bound to happen every time I turned around Yahoo was sending us another quote “UPDATED VERSION.” Well now we have no chat and I have lost contact with my Yahoo family. Yes to some us like me who live in very isolated parts of California Our Friends in chat were like our family we didn’t have. Thanks A lot Yahoo Smarties.

All functions is working including webcam viewing. They do have room admins in every room now and the chat is out of this world. I knew Yahoo would come thru for us and now I’m going back to chat with friends. They also have something new coming out within the next 2 days about bringing back some old features and better chat experience within the rooms. So I hope you all get the new updates and start back with real people in the rooms and bots free. Yoo Yoo for Yahoo.

It isnt as easy as some of you think it is to stop. Yahoo fixes something and a outside coder finds away around it. Some of you people realy need to get a life. If the high point of your day is chatting. Please never IM me lol. Yahoo over the last year has turned into little chat kingdoms (chatrooms) for people who have no lives. I’m just as anxious as the next person for yahoo to be fixed, and for those of you who think that yahoo needs to get someone in there that knows what they’re doing, my response to that is: programs as big as “yahoo chat” has to be really complex, and I trust they’re doing the best they can. I’m as guilty as the next person with blaming yahoo for all the problems on here, but in all honesty, yahoo really is the best chat service, in my opinion of course. If the end result is a better chat experience, then isn’t it worthe the wait? Hang in there people, the good times will roll again, I’m sure!!!

Over the last 2 months it has gone from oddly erratic to plainly unusable in both text and voice.

So how many times do we have to post on this blog before we start getting some real answers? A Drunk Monkey probably could a better job of getting chat fixed than the techies at Yahoo! Wonder how many donuts they have eaten, how many cups of coffee they drank, and how many video games they have played since chat went down? Seems they have more time to play video games, eat donuts, and drink coffee than get chat fixed. All of us would like more frequent answers than once every two weeks if we think about it. With all the bitching and moaning here you would think Sarah and company would inform us more frequently than what they have been doing. Alot of my friends have gone over to Pal Talk because Yahoo Chat is so messed up. Oh yeah! checked it again today in the small hopes they might have gotten it fixed but no! still 100 million bots in all the rooms, still get a communication error when you try to log into a room. Maybe Sarah should hire a drunk monkey to fix chat and fire the people who were suppose to be fixing this.

Problem is that all this work will be for naught when Yahoo finally realizes that the problem has switched from being mostly advertisement bots to being people creating bots to lock up rooms, as the main problem.
I know for a fact that Depression Support Rooms have been logged down by 3 people having a feud that bring in bots to load up the room so no spaces are availabe for others to get in. This has been going on now for 3 MONTHS and despite report after report of hundreds of names of the bots, Yahoo has NOT DONE ONE THING!!!
Why don’t you deal with the people who are the problem locking up rooms and most of your problems would be resolved, not to mention wouldn’t a simply ip tracker ( LIKE YOU HAVE BY THE WAY) do the trick if there was actually someone on the other side as a customer service side of yahoo, to ban these freaking idiots that make most of the problem?
Comment by Anna — August 28, 2007 #

Well it was bad enough the changes when we could not find anyone we know to chat to as there were a hundred rooms filled with bots and no control over where to go. Next we find out that we are logged off after every hour. Eventually I managed that by going to the same room, which was the only one it would let me in and others also made their way there.
BUT insult upon insult. Now not only do we get logged out each hour, which means if you leave your computer to do something, you find you have to log in upon your return, but you have to log in and go to a window where you post letters to verify yourself.
OK the bots are gone but by the look of it so am I.
I got in one time, but I had to restart my computer 3 times before the window would come up. When I was logged out after an hour, it would not get me back even after restarting, so I used a different ID then it would, but I spent half an hour trying to log in.
Then after an hour I was logged out again.
This morning I tried again. Its been 20 minutes, various restarts of the computer, and i know if i get in i have to do it all over again. The room I was to go in is full so it will be ages to get in and each time you change room you have to verfiy the ID
But its also coming up with error message, 99, from Yahoo. saying i have a firewall stopping me getting in, but its the same firewall as let me in last night so its nonsense..
So I posted in the code, its not letting me in and its blaming me this time.
Yahoo thanks for the improvements, but NO THANKS.
I have had enough.
Comment by Pinky — August 29, 2007 #
Yahoo is free, and provides lots of enjoyment for many people…however I too have to agree that I get tired of receiving automated email from yahoo suggesting you “ignore” booters and hackers. Even when confronted with evidence and those that brag about doing so Yahoo does nothing. I have even invited a moderator into a room to come incognito and observe…..and am greeted with the standard “iggy” letter. There isn’t much enjoyment when some have boot codes they do not hesitate to use……perhaps your programmers could alleviate that problem and truly let us enjoy our rooms again.

Woooo hoooooooo, I am loving Paltalk, I have not been able to get into certain chat rooms for over 4 months now thanks to people fighting, hence loading up the room with their personal bots to block others from coming in.
After 30 reports to Yahoo of hundreds of the bot names they had created, nothing was done.
Now I have a chat service that does what it says and yet they have figured a way not to make it cost you, why can’t yahoo.
If you are tired of being logged out after so long, or bots or room lock outs, I suggest you come to Paltalk, it rocks and is easy to use, not to mention you can create your own room if you don’t want admins and such.
I am done with Yahoo, have been for almost 4 months now thanks to the room lock out and rest assured I and the other 22 folks from the room that got locked out for 4 months won’t be coming back.
Hope you enjoy losing potential buyers, based on your ads in chat.
Good Bye Yahoo Chat & Good Ridance

Why does yahoo allow people to create bots and clones and fill the rooms, blocking it so others are not allowed to get in? If your going to give a free product why not make it work correctly so that people will want to buy into your other businesses. Also you enable others to harm peoples machines by allowing booting.

I am beginning to think that the issues right now are more widespread than just chat. I go into yahoo answers a lot and read the quesions; answer many of them. Today, I am receiving email from that site telling me I have been awarded best answer, from 3 weeks ago!! Has yahoo forgotten messenger chat rooms now that they made it difficult to enter the rooms? The captcha is usless, country music rooms are almost completely locked up with bots that are made by two childesh men who get mad at the drop of a hat. These rooms have been full for weeks now and nothing at all is being done about it.Its a shame a company as big as yahoo can be controlled by only a few mean people who like to ruin chat for the ones who don’t deserve this kinda treatment.Lets go back to the old days when all you had to deal with was booters and rude people on the mic.At least you didn’t have to move from room to room looking for a nice room with no bots!
Comment by b.j — October 21, 2007 #
Not sure you want to hear this but is an idea .There are programs like paltalk that has no bots or booters really , as bad as yahoo chat rooms . Might want to scope it out and see how they was able to do it .It’s really a bummer that yahoo has lost so much of their customers because of chances that didnt work.Yahoos had alot going for it until it kept upgrading to versions that took away alot of what we enjoyed most.Imyself cannot get near chat rooms , because i will not upgrade ,Iwas satisfied with the version i had, so im no longer in Yahoo chat ,as alot of others. All that was needed was get rid of bots and the booters.
Comment by loveablenfiesty — April 7, 2008 #
Are you people awake out there?Does anyone who works for yahoo ever go to chat to see what is going on?The country music chat rooms are about as usless as it comes with nothing but bots in there these days. You make it hard on the good people by creating that captcha mess but the bots made by just a few can easily get into the rooms and keep everyone out.I have reported these men several times to yahoo but nothing is being done about it.You let a couple men ruin your chat for everyone else.stop with the new messengers and all the so called improvements, and work on the real problem(bots!)

I have used Yahoo messenger for 9 years. Never had a problem until — I downloaded a new, namely Mac, version for my new Mac. and that’s were all the trouble started. I’ll mention a few things that bother me:
– I don’t receive any offline’s via messenger. I do receive them in my new version of Yahoo mail. (when I log off Yahoo messenger)
– The sentence I am typing isn’t displayed 100 % in my yahoo messenger box. I can read circa 10 words, then everything disappears.
– Since yesterday my I exceeds my amount to log into a chatroom. That’s weird. I do sometimes make a mistake with the code (who doesn’t) but that’s no reason to ban me out exclude me.
– Quite often I find myself in a chatroom where no words are displayed at all. But the list says 30 chatters.
– Pic on profile won’t save, Messenger pic won’t either.
– The sentence I am typing freezes circa 2-3 times while I type it. This causes an enormous delay.
Dear Yahoo engineers, developers,
pay some attention to be Mac. version of messenger. I predict that in the future more people will chose to use Mac as it’s gaining popularity.
Yahoo chat has been a good place for fun and sharing in those 9 years. But frankly, at this moment only annoyance is what’s left. A good reason for me to seek a place elsewhere, where Mac. users are taken serious.
Greetings,
O.

Yahoo is working on changing profiles, making new messengers, annoying captchas, and everything except the real problem! The captcha are usless and annoying, they do not keep bots out of chat.the frequent disconnects are annoying and do no good either.I suggest this, let everyone in yahoo have only two ids,get rid of the other chat clients like yahelite, disable the accounts of the people with voice laggers and booters and bots. The people in chat can not even enjoy a good day of chat without all this crap going on in the rooms. The profiles are worse than before, the new messengers are worse and the bots are certainly as bad if not worse. If pal talk can solve this problem why can’t yahoo? Seems like all the improving claimed to be done is just making chat worse, take some lessons from the pal talk people.Even if it means assigning a person to controll the rooms, who is trustworthy and fair to others. Some of the people have been in yahoo chat for over 9 years now and Im sure they can be fair to others.I love yahoo and have for years, but it’s getting to be a job just staying in a room and having fun these days. It;s a shame a few can ruin such a nice thing for others who are good people just trying to pass times and have fun.

What’s wrong with Yahoo? Why did they stop the 3 hours Capcha login verification expires? I don’t like it but was better because it stop all the room locker bots to locked the room for days/weeks or months. But Yahoo stop the 3 hours capcha expires and now its been a week that every room I want to chat is full or locked because it’s full of room locker bots using the a program called Room Distryo by Sowa. You can stay in Yahoo chatrooms for over 24 hours. For people who wants to chat is ok but noone can chat anymore in the chatrooms because you can’t even come in. I manage to get in in one of this room last week and it’s full of locker bots. I highlights all bots to see how long their been there in the room and it says Idle for over 24 hours. Why did Yahoo allow this again? I wish Yahoo make their minds.
