Makeover a friend’s Avatar
July 6, 2007 on 9:22 am | In Avatars, Fun Stuff |
First there was Trading Spaces, then Extreme Home Makeover… Now there’s Avatars Makeover, a new plug-in for Yahoo! Messenger for Windows (8.1; U.S. version). I’ve been having a lot of mischievous fun with it this past week.
The plug-in lets you makeover a friend’s Avatar and then send them your creation for consideration. Your friend can accept the makeover and apply the changes to their Avatar, or they can forego your fashion faux pas.
Even more fun is creating an Avatar for a friend that doesn’t have one yet. You get to start from scratch, choosing their gender, their hair, outfit, extras and more. My buddy John didn’t accept my gender-bending “RuPaul” inspired Avatar that I created for him, but he got a good laugh out of it. (You can change the gender of a friend’s Avatar even if they already have one).
Short on time? Just hit the “Makeover Magic” wand and let the plug-in create a wild new look. Once you’ve finished the makeover, click the “Send Avatar” button to start an IM to your friend that includes a link for previewing their madeover Avatar.
The Avatars Makeover plug-in is really easy to use and it’s a fun way to surprise a friend. Make changes by hovering on Avatar elements in the initial screen, or click on a category like “Change Apparel” to browse through many options. There’s even a search box so you can quickly find specific apparel or accessories (like a search on “tank” to find tank tops). Want your friend’s Avatar to be in a better mood? Click the smiley in the upper left to change it. And if you make a mistake or change your mind, handy Undo/Redo/Reset controls will get you going again.
Eventually someone will ask you “How did you do that??” To share the Avatar Makeovers plug-in, click the Options arrow in the upper right corner of the plug-in in your Messenger window and choose “Send Plug-in to a contact”.
Click here to install the Avatars Makeover plug-in (if your Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 is not running, go here to install). Now, go forth and make Yahoo! Messenger a more fashionable place!

I give it a try and made a avatar for a friend who didn’t have one. This plug-in it’s pretty interesting for a couple a minutes but my favorites still are the “Share Desktop” and “Yahoo! Avatars Space “ plug-in.

What is with you guys? You have all this time to create new emoticons and avatars, and a full blown AJAX frontend for YIM… but you don’t devote a speck of effort to solving Yahoo’s real problem: chat bots.
Why are you adding bells and whistles while the spam problem is rotting the core attraction of Yahoo chat?

I am really disappointed in the removal of comments- a disapproval of the Avatar program is just as important as compliments… and the point must be taken that with out chat they are useless… if you cannot utilize the chat features you cannot expand your friend base — and there is no need for an Avatar.
Comment by Charged — July 9, 2007 #
Sarah, I agree with Charged. However, even before all the problems with chat bots and the like, no one I know ever used avatars or any of the other “extras.” We just want to chat and share photos with friends, family and colleagues.

I agree completely.. All i want to do is make new friends in chat (on my mac of course), talk to the friends I already have, and be able to photoshare with them. Lets get these basic functions working correctly, then we can all make avatars or whatever.

Hi Elvish,
The plug-in should have installed in the bottom part of your main Messenger window (in the Plug-ins section). Click on the title bar of the plug-in to reveal it if needed. Then click the “Makeover your Friend’s Avatar” button in the box to get started. This tutorial may be helpful as well:
