New Yahoo! Messenger for Mobile Beta
June 20, 2007 on 10:58 am | In Mobile |
This week, we launched a new Beta version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mobile (WAP version). This new version improves on both features and performance. Here’s a quick summary of the improvements:
- Full conversation view which allows for a running conversation rather than the back and forth “SMS” style exchanges in the old version.
- A more appealing look to the application that now includes status icons (busy, idle), Avatars and display images.
- New lighter version that speeds performance.
- Support for more devices. If you couldn’t use Yahoo! Messenger on your mobile phone previously, be sure to try this new Beta version.
The application also offers some handy customization features for your contact list. You can display your friends by most recently contacted, those that are online, or all (offline and online). If you like to see your contacts sorted by groups you’ve created, just click the “Show Groups” link.
A handy search box also makes it easy to find a friend on your list without scrolling through multiple screens. You can also add contacts right from your phone. Don’t want to be contacted? Click the “Go Invisible” link to enter stealth mode.
To try the new Yahoo! Messenger for Mobile Beta, go to http://yahoo.com on your mobile phone (or http://m.yahoo.com if it doesn’t redirect automatically), and then click the “Messenger (Beta)” link.
Check out this earlier blog post for more information on mobile features for Yahoo! Messenger.

So how is the Mac version going? I hope other companies don’t wait 1 year to release each beta of their software.

Why doesn’t the web site load with IE 7?
Comment by Jim Vaglia — June 20, 2007 #
Well it’s made for WAP, so it more than likely won’t load in IE7 because browsers aren’t normally programmed to handle WAP sites. If you want to try it without using a cell phone, I believe there are a couple programs out there that emulate a WAP browser.

okay this website is soo damn addictive i love it!!!!!!!!!

Hey! This beta is really cool! It looks nicer and seems to work better than the old version!
Now, if they could just fix the chat system. That is slowly crashing all around them because of the system not deleting users, rooms then filling up, and people being unable to enter them. The bad word-of-mouth is simply incredible… does it have to make it into the computer press for them to clean it up? The shortsightedness of Yahoo management is unbelievable.

BTW, the new mobile chat still has the same problem the old one had… if you log in with any other screen name but your main screen name, it erroneously logs you in with your main screen name. That REALLY ought to be fixed!

The Opera browser (www.Opera.com) can natively handle any WAP site easily, without any third party junk or extensions. WAP rendering support has been in Opera since version 8, I think.

I was wondering if Y-messenger mobile was available through a downloadable installer for PDAs…is it?
Comment by Ahmad — July 18, 2007 #
Hi Ahmad,
We do have a couple of java-based apps for mobile phones, but it’s dependent on your carrier and your phone. Try locating a Yahoo! Messenger program in your phone’s program directory. If it’s not offered there, then you’ll have to use the WAP version. Just go to http://m.yahoo.com and click on the Yahoo! Messenger (Beta) link.

Does the beta automaticlly refresh or do you have to hit th button as I keep doing to see the next message. I am using the iphone.
Thanks
Comment by Racejets — July 27, 2007 #
Hi Racejets,
Yes, it should refresh automatically when a reply comes in from your friend during a conversation. That’s one of the key improvements. But I have not personally seen it on the iphone…I’ll try to look into it.

Get a clue Yahoo. Who in the world wants to load a wap yahoo interface using Internet Explorer on a Windows Mobile 6 PC. I mean really. All these smart phones out in the world and technology is passing them by. This is truely a tragedy before all technology and software and the hope of Yahoo ever redeeming their Instant Messenger for users of Mobile devices is faltering before the eyes of the public. Perhaps one day they will redesign the original Yahoo Messenger for pocket pc 1.0 and make it into something great. In the mean time i won’t hold much hope any further. WAP is absolutely worthless and depriving yahoo of excellence in the software engineering field.
Comment by Ryan — January 13, 2008 #
Agree w/ Ryan
With so many ‘alternatives’ offering java-based client, most people will prefer to connect using those, instead of having to open up a wap-based page. It’s so much more convenient. Why won’t Yahoo simply add ‘messenger widget’ to its Go! Application?
I really can’t understand the reasoning behind this. Is it so hard to implement a java-based messenger? Or is Yahoo deliberately leave that to other ‘alternatives’? They should have market analysts who could easily tell how many people own mobile phones with java support out there.. and how this is an interesting market to reach.

The Yahoo Go version 1.50 had inbuilt Yahoo Messenger which was so cool to use…….. it was just like being on Messenger on the PC. I wonder why Yahoo removed the Messenger from its Yahoo Go version 2.0
Now version 3.0 of Yahoo Go has come out……… does this have the Yahoo Messenger like in version 1.50 ? If not why can’t Yahoo do something about bringing back the Messenger as it was in v1.50
I really need that !!
Comment by Rajesh NJ — February 3, 2008 #
I just got a phone with windows mobile platform and i just wanted to know that if the yahoo messenger 3.0 Go can be used to video chat on the mobile or not…
It would be kind if some1 replied to it.
Thanks…

Hi Yahoo Team,
I have HTC p3300 with windows mobile 6 platform. Whenever I click on link send by yahoo in sms I get redirected to Yahoo OneSerch page in some languge.
This is becoming very frustating as I have to use somethird party applications to chat on yahoo messenger. I work in software too. As far as I understand there is some problem in identifying device or forwarding to right url.
Its more than two month now. I hope you guys are working on it and will solve it soon.
Thanks.

Hi muhammed,
There’s nothing to download. From your phone, go to this website address:
http://m.yahoo.com
On that page, you’ll find a link to Messenger.
