Security update

June 8, 2007 on 6:02 pm | In News | 53 Comments

An important security update is now available for users of Yahoo! Messenger on Windows. It is strongly suggested that all users download and install the latest version.

Even if you installed Yahoo! Messenger as recently as June 7th, 2007 you may not have the very latest version.

You can check which version you have by clicking the ‘Help’ menu option, at the top right of your Yahoo! Messenger window, and then clicking ‘About Yahoo! Messenger’. If the Yahoo! Messenger version number is 8.1.0.401 (or higher) then you have the latest and do not need to take any immediate action. If you are running anything lower than 8.1.0.401 then please upgrade to the latest version.

If you choose not to take action right now, you will receive a Security Update notification. We very strongly suggest that you click the ‘Update Now’ button and follow the instructions provided.

After you have upgraded to the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger, as a general rule, we recommend that, even if you know and trust the sender, you always take caution when receiving files from other Yahoo! Messenger users, clicking links, etc.

  1. Your users can download it directly without going through the trouble of installing extra stuff by downloading from http://download.yahoo.com/ycs/msg/dl/msgr8/us/ymsgr810_401_us.exe

When will chatroom servers be upgraded ? It takes more than 6 to 7 requests to join a chatroom and only then yahoo accepts the join request. Its frustrating waiting for chatrooms to load. Yahoo said they will do something about it this month but I see no reduction in bots, infact they have doubled past couple of days. There are some malicious users who use multiple bots (sometimes all 50 spaces are taken up by bots) to lock a chatroom so that no one else can enter the room and the innocent users are left stranded with nowhere else to go. Yahoo needs to do something about it fast as users are getting impatient and giving up on chatting in yahoo chatrooms.

  2. Rick is absolutely right, Yahoo should take immediate action on this, we dont want to waste out time by waiting to get in chat rooms or changing rooms one to other.

  6. Yahoo messenger messed it or didn’t it?

Read this: For example, I have a friend Honey Bunny. Her Yahoo! ID is ‘xxxxxuuuuuu’. Now I add this ID on Yahoo messenger. She also has a MSN ID xxxxxuuuuuu @hotmail’. So I open Yahoo messenger, right click on her ID…put down her WindowsLive/MSN ID…and add her. Now, both her MSN and Yahoo! ID are under one Contact name. So even if she is online from both her Yahoo and MSN then too it will show me just online Online Contact on Yahoo messenger…but on the number of contacts online at the top of Yahoo messenger…it will show as 2 contacts online.
    This was good.

With this latest messenger downloaded…it has automatically separated all the MSN IDs from Yahoo Messenger IDs and showing the 2 IDs of the same person separately…So before downloading this person I had about 20 contacts with their Yahoo and MSN ID under one contact name. Now it has expanded my contact list and showing me 40 contacts. Why has Yahoo done this? Or did you just mess it up while bringing an update??????????

    Comment by userrocks — June 9, 2007 #

  7. Oh wait…I found the reason by playing with it…Actually I will tell you the reason:

See I had this contact Honey Bunny (it is just an example) as I told you…Her Yahoo and MSN ID were on my Yahoo messenger list under just one contact name. Now, I had my stealth setting set as ‘invisible’ to Hunny Bunny. So the latest version of Yahoo messenger separated her Yahoo ID and MSN ID…and showed me that I am appearing invisible to her on her Yahoo! ID but visible to her on her MSN ID.

So now I became visible to her Yahoo ID too and then it brought both her YAhoo! and MSN ID under one contact them…then I right clicked and became invisible againt to Honey Bunny…but this time it didn’t separate her Yahoo and MSN ID and this is where the latest messenger messes up.

So yeah…my advice for Yahoo messenger people is…it’s good that we can have 2 IDs (Yahoo and MSN) of the same person under one contact name…but when we go invisible to that contact name you should separate the 2 IDs automatically. Once separated then we can decide if we want to go invisible to both the IDs (Yahoo and MSN). And then when we go invisible to both or when we are online to one and offline to the other in that case both the IDs should remain separated. And when we are online to both then both the IDs should show as one contact.

I know I am making sense to the Yahoo messenger people. People who don’t know about this feature may have some difficulty to understand.

    Comment by userrocks — June 9, 2007 #

  8. Here is another clarification as I am trying to bring the Yahoo nd MSN IDs of the same contact under one contact name after they got separated by the new version.

Well, for the separated Yahoo and MSN IDs of say Tommy Pommy…if I right click and go invisible to Yahoo ID of Tommy Pommy then it will bring the Yahoo and MSN ID of Tommy Pommy under one contact name and go invisible altogether.
But another instance…say for Hot Bot…if I right click and go invisible to MSN ID of the Hot Bot then it will bring the Yahoo and MSN ID of Hot Bot together under one contact name but it will not go inivisible…so I have to right click again on that single contact name (which now has both Yahoo and MSN Id under it) and go invisible to it and then again get visible.

So yahoo has messed this thing up. It should follow the process that I have mentioned above in order to sort out the confusion and instruct it’s machines to do things and clarify here how things will happen…

  9. Sarah if you are around would you please try to answer one of my most important questions. I am a computer geek more of a internet geek but can you please try to answer this perhaps by opening a new topic sometime around this month. Yahoo Announced the Vista WPF Version of Yahoo Messenger will be available the 2nd quarter of this year. That is about now aint it? if im right.. 3 months = 1 quarter of the year , 6 months = 2 quarters of the year. So June is meant to be the month this Vista Yahoo Messenger is released. Could you let us know some more info on this.

I have got some questions below also which i have had in the back of my head for months and want to clear these questions.

    1) Will Yahoo Vista Messenger have Chatrooms?
    2) Is this the new rollout the Yahoo President was onabout?
    3) Very Importantly .. Will it support Windows XP?
    4) If it just supports Vista , Why? I brought a OEM Disc of Vista and decided to cut it up with my Scissors due to the Hard Drive Timout Bug and the Power Supply Bug…
    5) Will it Support all the features of Yahoo Messenger 8.1
    6) Most Importantly, Will all the old messengers and Protocols be killed.

I know alot of work has been going on this month with the Yahoo Servers and know there must be some kind of rollout for the Yahoo Messenger 8.1 Chats or it could mainly be that the Vista Yahoo Messenger is being released this month and the Yahoo Developers are getting the new Servers ready for the all new WPF Version of Yahoo Messenger.. Maybe Yahoo’s next major release of its Popular Messenger client to support Windows Vista aswell as Windows XP.

Im really hoping we hear something this month regarding the Vista Yahoo Messenger as it is the second quarter of the year.

been nice typing this up. Thanks in Advance…

Yahoo Messenger for Vista will be previewed Monday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and will be launched in public beta during the second quarter. It offers the ability to resize the contacts window and to start a chat without opening a chat window, easy access to a color wheel to change the background color, and the ability to make photos full-screen size when sharing them. Users can also combine multiple chat sessions into one window with multiple tabs and can drag and drop a contact onto the desktop for separate viewing.

  14. I, too, am confused by the Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Messenger for Vista.. The Security update for June 8, 2007 doesn’t allow me to install on my pc…(Is this because I have Vista and need to wait, or what)? I’ve tried the Beta and my keystrokes stagger or drop letters completely as I type for some unknown reason, so I’ve just done the yahoo messenger 8.0 (I think)…this has been very frustrating and feedback I have received from other yahoo clients don’t seem to have this problem, or just haven’t tried it yet..I need help and don’t seem to know the proper way to get it.

  15. Changelog ?

    Comment by Muzammil — June 9, 2007 #

  16. Obviously been called Yahoo! messenger for Vista it will only work on vista…using vista specific only technologies.

Since both are used and updated alongside each other i’m sure that wont change for a long time yet.

If the vice president of the yahoo! messenger team says they are upgrading the chat servers why would they not put chatrooms in the vista version?

The chatrooms join requests have been awfully slow as of late but still somewhat usable, however i’m sure they are very aware of this not by just the posts here but requests to customer support also.

I’m sure within the next week or so they will have the situation fixed and it will be back to normal but flaming a blog entry ain’t going to make it get better overnight!

    just a suggestion!

  21. Just updated Messenger to the latest version and now cannot even sign in to it. Running XP, not VISTA. I’ve tried reinstalling the new version four times already and still cannot sign in.
    Any suggestions or advice?
Thinking about going back to the previous version but don’t want to lose my contact list.

    Comment by Rick — June 10, 2007 #

  22. Yes. I have just downloaded the new messenger and can not join any chat rooms. Is this a problem with the new messenger or a problem with the chatrooms? (A network status page would be nice!)

Also, was the security issue fixed by build 401 only affecting users running with administrative privileges?

    Comment by John — June 10, 2007 #

  23. 1) you dont rebuild messenger overnight

    2) your buddylist is stored online so every version will have it

    3) maybe if you didn’t all demand a build straight away it wouldnt have so many bugs?

    4) vista is pretty new to the user and developer and its a learning curve

    5) yahoos unistaller doesnt remove all of messenger, do a full manual uninstall then reinstall it and see if it works then.

    6) its pretty evident the servers are back to been very slow and room joins very slow but im sure they are aware and working on it.

    Comment by Dermot — June 10, 2007 #

  24. not only its slow getting in the rooms, once you get into a room you got them mass iggy bots in there people have nothing better to do with there live’s beside’s sitting in a yahoo chat room locking the room with there programs,i think it would be better if yahoo just closed the chat rooms until it is fixed

it WILL have bugs even when it’s released. it’s better to release a beta and see how many bugs there are than to release a final version and then after, a 100 patches

Your products to say the least are extremely exploitable. People more often than never get hacked, booted and worse.

Your auto-responce for customer care is a big joke!
