iTunes Remote plug-in

June 7, 2007 on 4:42 pm | In Features |

I listen to music most of the day while I’m working, so the iTunes plug-in is a personal favorite. Once installed, it lets me control iTunes remotely from Yahoo! Messenger. It shows me what track is playing along with artist and album, and even allows me to toggle the shuffle feature on or off. The interface also includes forward and back buttons, a volume slider and a pause/play button.

One of my favorite features is that when a new track begins, the iTunes plug-in briefly displays the album artwork, and then drops it into the center of the spinning record seen on the left side of the plug-in.

The iTunes plug-in is available for download free from the Yahoo! Messenger plug-in gallery (along with hundreds of others!). Note that plug-ins are only available for the Windows version of Yahoo! Messenger (8.1).

There is also an iTunes integration in the Yahoo! Messenger for Mac Beta. You can share the iTunes track you’re listening to in your status message. Once iTunes is running on your Mac, click on the status menu in Messenger to change it to display the current song.

  1. Oh yeah! Oh yeah!
    (proud mac user)

btw.. I just noticed yesterday that Y! Messenger is not using Keychain to store the passwords. Why is that? Sarah, can you please ask the Mac team and write something about this anytime soon or just reply here? I’ll check back here again. It’s a matter of security. Thank you >:D

  5. It would be nice if you guys published a brief changelog with each release of Y! Messenger.

And the current release (today) 8.1.401 wiped out all my archived messages on my Vista x64 box.

  9. I seen that plug in I just wish it would automatically change the status to the song I’m playing like LaunchCast does when the plug in is in use.

If It did that I would start using it and because it does not do that I unistalled it.

Does not make sence since you guys already have an option to let plug ins change status messages.

  10. Irene, that little star is called a “gleam” and there is no current way to disable this from appearing on your buddies’ buddy lists when updating Yahoo! 360.

Glad to see iTunes getting some love. But, can you guys do anything about the script errors when we exit iTunes while Yahoo! Messenger is still running? Other than that, and the need to change the colors of the plugin (other than purple, to match skins), all is good.
