NEW! Yahoo! Messenger for the Web

May 2, 2007 on 5:41 pm | In Web version |

Ever wish you could use Yahoo! Messenger without having to download or install anything? Well, today is your lucky day: please give a big Yahoo! welcome to the all-new Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.

Yahoo! Messenger for the Web

Now you can sign in from any web browser (PC or Mac!) and immediately start IM’ing with friends. This is great for when you’re on someone else’s computer or traveling and need to stop in an internet café.

Plus, time at work just got a lot more fun. If you or a friend is prevented from IM’ing at the office due to firewalls or other IT restrictions, you’ll love this new version. Because Yahoo! Messenger for the Web runs in a regular web browser window, it sidesteps these obstacles and lets you connect easily with your friends.

This is also the first version of Yahoo! Messenger that we’ve ever offered in Vietnamese (yeah!). It’s also available in Portuguese and Traditional Chinese, and we’ll continue adding more languages over time.

Check out the full article about the new Yahoo! Messenger for the Web over on our corporate blog, Yodel Anecdotal. Or watch the brief movie below to see it in action.

When you’re ready to take it for a spin, head over to http://webmessenger.yahoo.com and just sign in. Your full contact list will be waiting for you, including your Windows Live Messenger friends. (Tip: Type web.im in your browser to get there even faster).

Congratulations to the Yahoo! Messenger for the Web team on the launch of this great new product. We hope you enjoy it!

Sarah Bacon
Product Manager

P.S. – Like the Messenger integration in Yahoo! Mail, you can’t be signed into the full version of Messenger and the web version at the same time. If you sign into one, you’ll be automatically signed out of the other.

  11. Doesn’t work! “Coming soon! Yahoo! Messenger for the Web is not yet available for your country.”

Why do you announce a product on the web (i.e. world-wide) that is only available in a select few (one?) country and don’t even bother to mention that restriction?

  13. LOL. I am in Europe but I use Yahoo! US as my content provider. Just make Yahoo! US as your content provider and you will be able to it.

Coming back to messenger…Wow it loaded so quickly (I agree that my internet and computer are seriously fast too). It was good. And the smilies look different. And also the Pirate smiley is a new one.

Just one request: Please allow us to turn off Archive. I know Archive can be turned on the Yahoo! messenger platform and this is okay.
But a searchable platform of archiving on Yahoo messenger on the web…this will be dangerous.

Please give the option that archiving can be turned off…and if i turn it off it should be turned off on the person’s side too with whom I am messaging.

All else is okay and good.

  14. Hey … I went to Options and I saw that we can DISABLE MESSAGE HISTORY…so I am sorry for the earlier comment.

Now I need a clarification: If I disable message history, will it be disabled on the side of the person with whom I am messaging?

    Please clarifiy.

  15. Can’t see it in the UK. We can’t see messenger in mail, neither. WHY do companies insist on staggering their rollouts? Is this the World-wide web, or just the American Web? *frustrated*

  16. Ask Blair to talk to Bush regarding this…and Bush may give messenger to you if not the oil. LOLOLOL.

  18. Nice work on the New webmessenger folks.

    The smileys are cool also.

Will the web messenger have a chatroom option to connect to the chatservers via the flash interface?

is the pirate smiley planned for future messengers?

How is the web messenger handled to cater for pm floods?

The webmessenger also has the spamguard report option which is great but can you tell me if yahoo! actually act on these names or just add a local based block for these id’s?

I’m sure it could be possible to add a “right click on user” thats spamming and report them to spamguard and a user reported so many times can be examined and checked if pornagraphic or bad and be added to a blacklist on the servers?

Or perhaps a similar system bots like other chats have used to sweep rooms for blacklisted ids and disconnect them.

  19. YIM is great (although would like audibles for the OSX version for when I’m working on the MacBook).

But, one thing sorely lacking that other IM clients have: inline spell check.

  22. Wow, I was the first one to write regarding the Market Availability of Yahoo messenger and my comment got deleted and Sarah comes back and posts her comment after that.

    Why was my comment deleted?

    1) Because it contained a link to Yahoo! News as source?
    2) Or because I asked, “why was India in the list?”
    3) But my Bush and Blair comment is still there.

    Double standards, eh!

P.S.: Anyway, I like bashing a few countries so deal with it.

  24. 1) Love the URL shortcut, http://web.im (Isle of Mann? Crazy!)
    2) Love the new emoticons, particularly this one :o
    3) Love the ability to add a new contact right inline, and the ability to rename a group
    4) Love the speed. It is substantially faster the second time I log in
    5) Love that the ad doesn’t change all the time, making things slower
    6) Love the tabbed conversations
    7) Love how I can see that someone has sent me a message, even when their tab is not in focus

This is a sweet product! Thank you, Yahoo! Messenger Team.

It is not depending on the location. It depends on which Yahoo! content have you opted for…Yahoo! US or Yahoo! UK or Yahoo! Brazil, etc.

You can see your content setting by going to http://account.yahoo.com

  36. I think that this was a great idea for a number of my friends who hate having to download things becuase they think it has viruses and more.

But i do think that Yahoo! should be working on bigger things then this. Such as Yahoo for Vista.

Alot of people are waiting on that. Including me. Thats just my thought though…

    Comment by Ryan — May 6, 2007 #

  37. I must say this was really nice. BUT, I think it was stupid of you to make a webmessenger, instead of making the new windows vista messenger. :/

    Comment by Arild Lund — May 6, 2007 #

  38. I’ve been using the Yahoo Messenger for a long time now; both on Windows and Mac. Currently, I’m using Yahoo! Messenger Version 3 Beta 1 on my Mac.

I have the following issues in using the Mac version.

    a. My IM address keep on being reduced everytime I log into it. One time only 2 were left out of almost 30 addresses. I had to add them again one by one. This has happened at least 10 times already, so you can just imagine my frustration.

    b. Everytime I need to re-add my addresses (not to mention my friends are complaining that I keep on wanting to add them everytime they log on), it is not easy to do so in Mac, so I shift to Windows to do it, then come back to Mac. Just imagine the hassle.

    c. At one time, my own name was not even correct, according to my friends!

    d. The above problem does not appear when I use Windows version. But I really need to use Mac most of the time.

    Hope you can help.

  39. I have tried the web messenger and the product is actually great.

Now how about getting us a beta of the vista messenger?

  40. “Ever wish you could use Yahoo! Messenger without having to download or install anything? Well, today is your lucky day: please give a big Yahoo! welcome to the all-new Yahoo! Messenger for the Web.” Bu then on the next setup page they tell you what you have to download and install. If Yahoo were actually selling this, the FTC would want some answers.

  41. for web messenger there’s meebo. yahoo should not clone something that already exists, they should really put some effort in the desktop client, since that’s it’s strength. the longer the wait for the vista version, the bigger the disaster.
the bigger they are, the harder they fall

    Comment by Chynma — May 18, 2007 #

  48. I would love to see Yahoo IM extended very slightly to include a conversation message counter (incremented each time you click Send) and a software “detector” that will let you know if your messages are not incremental. In other words, you missed receiving a message for whatever reason (your machine hibernated, the network ate it, etc.). I see this problem every day where either I or someone I’m communicating with misses a message and then it takes 10 minutes to get back in sync mentally. “You never answered my XYZ question.” Since I use Yahoo IM for technical conversations with partners around the world, this is almost a critical flaw.

  50. This is a wonderful job. Few days ago I found out that Google talk has been embedded into the browser and I can have it on my Google homepage. Right from that moment I thought Yahoo must also do something similar. Yahoo messenger is loaded with features and it would be awesome to see those on the browser and I believe that this first step is a massive one. Great Work and Thank you very much.

  65. It takes a very long time to load i’ve had it open for a while (this is the first time i’ve ever used it) and I can’t even get on it to see how it works!! I have no other way to chat because online (in mail) my status bar isn’t showing up and…the yahoo messenger download messes up my computer. I’m guessing it doesn’t work on vista because i’ve read lots of comments on people who have vista, that is taking forever to load (I have vista too). I’m really disapointed in yahoo!Messenger for the web-beta. It’s been about 30 minutes or more and it’s still loading. Anyways please comment on mine if you have vista and your having the same problem! (by the way yahoo! Messenger for the web was a great idea I just think they need to do some fixing up on it)
