Say hi to the real emoticons
March 28, 2007 on 1:39 pm | In Fun Stuff |
Another Hack Day took place this week here at Yahoo!. Messenger engineers Ryan Doherty and Jonathan New decided to make a hack for our very own blog. They developed a WordPress plug-in that makes it possible to use all the Yahoo! Messenger emoticons on our blog (even the hidden ones). Thanks Ryan and Jon!

Any chance of having a “Unhack” day to fix certain hacks like the tabs in 8.1.0.244? perhaps make a party out of it, have cakes and buns and fix messenger for fun.

I’ve seen the emoticons of other instant messengers and Yahoo has the best native emoticons hands down. If you guys ever consider adding more think about including a head-banger emoticon! One hand with the horned salute, while the head is banging back and forth.

Subject: Pornagraphy
I had been using a certain third party chat protocol to accsess Yahoo Chat, and as an experiment I tried logging into Yahoo Chat directly from Yahoo’s own chat/messenger program.
Needless to say, I was blown away. I thought, that after six months using a third party utility, I would be pleasantly suprised to discover that Yahoo had fixed most of the bugs with their chat enterprise.
I quickly discovered, however, that this was not to be the case. In fact, the problem had grown like a virus, three fold.
Well, enough is enough. I would strongly urge those users of Yahoo Chat that are quite fed up with the annonymity of the powers that be, at Yahoo Headquarters, to voice their opinion on the state of affairs as pertain to Yahoo Chat.
If they so choose to purvey a service in which is promised a genuine wholesome “chat experience”, well then fine. But if said service providers convey that the wholesale marketing of off-shore pornagraphy, unhindered in every way, is acceptable…Well then I think its high time we turn to Google to develop a fail safe mechanism in which we, the public, may communicate. Unhindered by the same character strings (i.e. “Do you think my milkshake brings the boys” or “Is your pixture real” or “Horny boys, see my link at…”)
And, alas if all else fails, may we take comfort in the fact that if those in charge, in Sunnyvale, California may here the voices of those of us that formerly used their popular instant messaging device…We Will NO longer USE YOUR SERVICE!
And so thus forth, may it also be known, that the small city of Sunnyvale, California shall be forever known as a town that condones bait & switch, fly by night operations. Such as are advertised by Yahoo Incorporated and any/and or all of its affiliates. And so as Yahoo is endorsed as family friendly by the citizens of Sunnyvale, California….So shall it be known that Sunnyvale, California shall bow down to thy highest bidder. And Thyne toil shall be well speant in Sunnyvale, as the powers that be in that small city take bribes freely.

BTW… How can we do a thumbs up (y) or thumbs down (n) like in WLM in Yahoo! Messenger?
Comment by Muzammil — March 29, 2007 #
Muzammil, You can’t use the MSN smileys in Yahoo! Messenger, only a few smileys have been made compatible across the messengers (but the yahoo equivalents are shown on the Yahoo client and the MSN ones on the MSN client)
The compatibility of the smileys is somewhat confusing when you get into details (See: http://www.wackyb.co.nz/Yahoo_Messenger_and_Windows_Live_Messenger_Smileys/ )
If you grab the YEmotePlus plugin ( http://gallery.yahoo.com/apps/380/locale/en ) when you are chatting with a MSN live user you can optionally hide all the unavailable smileys from the plugin window.
Hope this helps

What good are emotions when you can use them in the room will with bots.
We all know those pesky things the want to do this or have you come and view there cam,. SO why waste time creating emotions instead if fixing the dang chat rooms.
Comment by den — March 29, 2007 #
Wow, people certainly love their chat rooms around here. Back to the subject at hand: very fun Wordpress plugin.
Is it publicly available anywhere (so we can use it in our own WP blogs)?
Comment by Sean Montgomery — March 29, 2007 #
Sarah,
Could you please stop wasting our time on announcing improvements to plug-ins, emoticons and such, and start addressing more important issues like when the new Messenger for Vista will be introduced? Could we have an update please?

Comment by Lucky — March 29, 2007 #
Hi Aja - They’re working. You just had the wrong text equivalent for the praying emoticon (I fixed it for you in your comment). If you need a refresher, head over to http://messenger.yahoo.com/emoticons.php.

Hi Sean - Sorry, the WordPress plugin enabling Yahoo! Messenger emoticons won’t be made publicly available. Thanks,

Why doesn’t my font work in any chat rooms? The emoticons are no good if they are not being seen by anyone.

The best emotions of yahoo!>
But I don’t like hidden emothion.
Comment by Northern Kelly — March 30, 2007 #
Thanks Andy, I was actually hoping to have those two emoticons (Thumbs up & Thumbs down) in one form or the other on Yahoo! Messenger I tend to use them a lot.
I’d really love to see Yahoo! include them in Messenger officially.
Comment by Muzammil — March 31, 2007 #
Hi Muzammil,
If all you want is a thumb up and down, You can do this in messenger with windows fonts: http://www.tiptree.me.uk/Scrap/thumb.jpg but not sure how it would show over msn…

this is all well and good but when are we getting the vista version of yahoo messenger its april already im tired of looking at the demo
Comment by gooch — March 31, 2007 #
@Admin:
I just forgot to use the HTML entity code of the less than sign for the praying emoticon—WordPress thought I was trying to put in some HTML. I know my emoticon codes, I love ‘em.
But, I don’t think you’ve answered my question. Could we use these Yahoo! emoticon images as the emoticons on our blogs? Please note that I’m not asking for you to publish the code you use here, I just want to ask permission if we could use the images on our sites as our emoticons. Thank you.

hey i want to get the hidden emitions how can i get them
Comment by gaby — April 6, 2007 #
Hi Gaby,
Hidden emoticons are available at:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/hiddenemoticons.php
They’re not available in the emoticon menu in the program so you need to know the text equivalents to be able to use them. Or, get the handy WackyB YEmotePlus plug-in that lets you have all emoticons, including the hidden ones, available in a menu while you IM.

Comment by Aja — April 8, 2007 #
I think they misunderstood your question, Aja. I did, at first, too.
You are not asking for their code, but for permission to use the emoticons. So, in other words, if you came up with a code or hack of your own, you could use it yourself. — Is that right?
Comment by Lorilei — June 1, 2007 #
Yes. That’s what I was trying to ask them. I could make my own PHP/WP code, I just couldn’t make emoticons as cute as they do.
Comment by Aja — June 9, 2007 #
This is cool. Thanks Yahoo!
