Emoticon Fever

March 9, 2007 on 7:21 am | In Fun Stuff | 95 Comments

People tell me all the time how much they love the emoticons in Yahoo! Messenger. I think they’re cute too but when you read how these two users have channeled their emoticon passion, you too will believe.

Laney’s story couldn’t stop me from grinning. She sent us a picture of a Yahoo! Messenger “big grin” emoticon that she has tattooed on her leg. That’s a permanent, forever, not-going-anywhere tattoo!

Laney tells us she got the tattoo because it captures her bubbly personality and symbolizes the relationships she has enjoyed because of Yahoo! Messenger. She met her son’s adoptive family online and got to know them using Yahoo! Messenger and Mail. She also chats with close friends in faraway places like England, Greece, Turkey and Africa. Laney said “The ‘big grin’ was the best symbol I could find to represent my general love of the internet.”

We originally discovered a user named Darius from a blog comment he posted about his latest creation, the “emoticoncert”. Using text, Yahoo! Messenger emoticons and a catchy tune, Darius creates music videos with his IM window. Check out his emoticoncert “Mistaken” with music by Save Ferris:

He’s made six emoticoncerts so far using both English and Romanian tunes. Response to his creations has surprised even Darius, capturing media attention in his home country of Romania, flooding his accomplice Paula with many new friends, and even prompting a video parody from an appreciative viewer. View all of Darius’ emoticoncerts

Thanks to Laney and Darius for showing their dedication to everyone’s favorite little emoticons.

  6. Hey, Yahoo! developers and users.

Thanks for the apreciation and cheers to the grin-tattoo girl.

@Lucky – Yes, the Mad World emoticoncer was the first I made and I think most popular – it prolly was the best, I can’t explain why, although tunes are not from the same genre.

I would hug everyone but as people said I’m not sure the emoticon would turn up.

    Anyway >:D

    Comment by Darius — March 10, 2007 #

  7. Hm… it deleted everything that was after the last arm from the hug emoticon… Maybe code problem?

  8. Reference: Click 2 Troubleshooters

Click 2 “Troubleshooters” from KPRC Local Channel Two, based in Houston, Texas, broke the story about filthy chatrooms and tha advertisers that unknowingly sponsored them. Remember, this spelled the end for user created chatrooms.

Now, Yahoo says no one under 18 can use their chat service. This is a good idea, in concept, but “Family Accounts” still offer the option of letting underage people to use their chat protocol. Just go research Yahoo Family Accounts.

And still no action on pornagraphy “bots” that offer up links to filth in their chatrooms. Oh sure, a lot fewer porn-bots directly message a user now. I think spam guard is working in that respect. But the entities that produce porn-bots and other such spim have responded in kind by simply flooding Yahoo Chatrooms with an exhausting number of bogus screen names. Thus rendering Yahoo Chat unusable in many instances.

Certainly, with all of the hub-bub surrounding social networking web services, Yahoo might have taken the initiative to clean up the act. But no.

In closing, let me state that Click 2 Troubleshooters would, I think, be interested in doing a follow up story to their origional, that closed user created chat rooms.

That Yahoo Inc would allow thousands upon thousands of unchecked “porn-bots” to infest their chat rooms boggles the mind, and anything and everything should be done to bring this very simple fact to their immediate attention. If it takes media coverage, well then so be it.

  12. If you are into Yahoo’s Emoticons (smileys) in a big way (and lets face it who isn’t! you can now test your skills (or a fun way to improve them) using EmotiBlaster http://www.wackyb.co.nz/EmotiBlaster originally written by Chris Szeto, we’ve taken his excellent code and with permission updated it to include all the latest smileys and key combinations, a few other tweaks here and there (full details of update on site); But most importantly (well at the moment as I’m at the top of the leader board :o ) I’ve added submit your high score. So if you think you’re a wizz with the smiley codes without looking them up see if you can get past level 4 (New help box shows the codes required for any missed smileys so you learn as you play for next time). Have fun.. http://www.wackyb.co.nz/EmotiBlaster

  22. Yo listen up Enough– yeah Im talkin to you!! Have you ever heard of this little thing called “Parenting”????? It’s this thing where you don’t allow your kids to surf the net without supervision. If you did that once in awhile, our government wouldn’t have to become the babysitters they have had to become and we wouldn’d have so many screwed up kids these days. Take some freakin responsibility for a change, instead of blaming your lack of it onto anything and everything you can find– other than where it belongs- on your shoulders!! Its not Yahoo’s fault your kidlet got into the porn- its yours, plain and simple, because you wern’t watching the little darling(hellion is probably closer I’d bet). Geez when is this ever gonna stop?
Enough, you may as well get in line for your National ID card and microchip too– folks like you deserve one, cause you can’t think for yourself.

    Just my 2 cents!!

Yeah and btw, nice emoticons…I’ve really enjoyed them over the years.

  31. [...] After repeatedly being posted on Romanian and foreign blogs Darius decided to post the link and a shot review on the Yahoo! Messenger blog. The next day ha was very surprised at seeing that his post had been paid attention by Sarah Bacon, Product Manager at Yahoo! Messenger. “Hello Darius, it’s extraordinary. Very clever.” His girlfriend’s ID was added by 85 people to their personal Yahoo! Messenger list. Some of those who sent her messages did it just for fun but others had serious intentions. One of them Jeff Bonforte, who is in charge with Yahoo! Messenger with voice, contacted Darius’ girlfriend on Messenger. Darius got his personal e-mail address and personally wrote to him. When asked how he could prove his identity and support his claim of working for Yahoo! Bonforte told Darius to search his name on the internet. The young student found that Bonforte was indeed an employee of the well known web site. [...]

  80. Mike Perier says that The 1st show of the new series, broadcast on Saturday, featured a kissogram, a naked Physician along with a “sexed up” Tardis.During the special 65-minute episode, The Eleventh Hour, in which Physician Who had 20 minutes to save Earth from aliens recognized as the Atraxi, his new companion, Amy Pond, was revealed as a kissogram dressed in a skimpy policeman’s outfit, complete with mini-skirt and handcuffs. In one scene, Amy, played by the actress Karen Gillan, told the Dr that her kissogram repertoire also included nuns and nurses’ outfits. Uncover out much more at Sci Fi Fan, can anyone comment on this?
