“Yahoo! Messenger, meet Yahoo! Mail”

February 14, 2007 on 9:54 am | In Web version |

There have been shared features between Yahoo! Mail and Messenger for awhile, like the ability to see who’s online from your Mail address book or getting alerts in Messenger when a new Mail message arrives. But hold your horses, there’s a new integration in town – Messenger is now built right into Yahoo! Mail Beta.

As a Messenger user, this integration may not be too earth-shattering since you’re used to having Messenger open on your desktop. But for millions of Yahoo! Mail users that have never used instant messaging, this new integration makes it really easy to get started.

When you sign into Yahoo! Mail Beta, you’ll see a new menu next to your Yahoo! ID that lets you choose your online availability. When you select “Available”, you’ll appear online to your friends and be able to send and receive IM’s right in Mail.

One of the coolest features is the ability to transform an email into an IM. Let’s say I am writing my friend Terri an email about dinner plans for tonight. As I’m writing, Terri happens to come online. A yellow alert bar then appears in my Mail window that says “Terri is now online and available to chat. Chat Now”. With one click, I transform my half-composed email into an IM and voila, Terri and I are instant messaging (screenshot).

You can also send offline IM’s that your friend will see the next time he or she logs into Mail (or Messenger). To get a full tour of this new marriage between Mail and Messenger, check out the video tour below created by Yahoo! Mail Beta evangelist, Ryan Kennedy (hi-res version available here).

A few other things to keep in mind… If you’re already using Messenger, setting your status to “Available” in Mail will sign you out of Messenger since you can only be online in one or the other. This new lightweight version of Messenger in Mail is just that – light on features. It’s meant to offer the basic benefits of online availability and instant messaging. For the more robust features like webcam, instant file transfer, voice, LAUNCHcast etc., stick with the full version of Yahoo! Messenger. But if you’re on a computer where you can’t install Messenger but still want to IM, this new web-based Messenger in Mail is a handy alternative.

If you have friends or family that have been reluctant to join you on IM or aren’t sure how, this new integration with Mail makes it incredibly easy. The feature begins rolling out this week and will gradually become available to all Yahoo! Mail Beta users over the next 3 months. So if you don’t see it in your Mail account right way, please be patient!

Kudos to the Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! Messenger teams for bringing this integration to life. We hope you enjoy it!

Do you seriously think this is inovative? google mail has always had this they offer over 2gb of FREE space you just used the same idea and called it a different name to funny no wonder the “chatters” on yahoo are at least 90% spam bots when this is the kind of ideas you come up with many are moving to paltalk i can not blaim them people are sick of the spam and the exploits in yahoo with that http exploit what is now patched how long did it take you? over 2 months it could have been patched in minutes there is a new one out now.. do not worry folks another 6 months yahoo will patch it lmao

    Hi,

“not be too earth-shattering”, but still very cool feature !.
I just cant wait till I put my hand on it !
Some people post only bad comments which are not relevant to this blog, and I’m happy to see that you delete them.
Is there any chance that instead of waiting “over the next 3 months”, One can subscribe somewhere and use this feature earlier ?

I’ve also wanted to ask, sometimes (not often) people send me urls, but I don’t get them.
The only thing I’ve found about it is this:
    http://yro.slashdot.org/yro/06/10/10/2042248.shtml
and a lot of rumors about blocking urls.
Is there any official Y! policy about it ?

  7. Hi Nick -

Thanks for your note. Yahoo! Messenger does not routinely block YouTube URLs. In fact there’s a pretty cool plug-in that when running, will automatically start playing the youtube video you send right in your IM window so you and a friend can watch it together:
    http://us.gallery.yahoo.com/apps/4347/locale/en

As for why your links are not always going through… We have anti-spam filters in place to protect our users from spim (IM spam). Our filters have heuristics in place that identify sending characteristics associated with spammers. We also update our filters based on the feedback we receive from our users through our report spam button.

At times, our filters (and users) identify legitimate messages as spam – which is what we call a false positive. There were certain scenarios where we observed false positives with some YouTube URLs. The majority of our users were not affected by this. We are always fine tuning our filters to make sure legitimate URLs are delivered.

We continue to monitor sending patterns associated with spammers and the reports we receive from our users, to make sure our users are not receiving URLs that are considered spam.

    Thanks,

    Sarah Bacon

  8. Hi friend4u -

Unfortunately we do not have any carrier relationships with Greek mobile companies. So if your friend does use a Greek carrier, it’s unlikely that we support SMS messages to their phone number. Thanks,

  9. I hate that we keep getting popups to upgrade. I dont like the new version, so why can’t I stay with the version I like? come on now……

    Comment by ohkanaduh — February 16, 2007 #

  10. Since upgrading to the 8.1 it’s buggy. Won’t minimize or close using th the symbols on the right hand corner. I’ve installed twice. This is quite aggravating.

  11. Nick,

Most comments are relevant, it’s from people who are trying to get Yahoo! Messenger to be a stable service, but are getting no answers, and deletions of content, rather than an answer.

And to lol, you are spot on when Yahoo! take existing ideas and copy them. Yahoo! is not doing so well and has to undergo massive internal reorganisation to try and sort their mess out.

  12. Late is better than nothing wtg Yim Team

    Sarah,

I see emoticons changed , isnt this better

If you don’t mind i can suggest more ( even some of them can be good for all Yahoo! blogs)

    - Users avatars near their comment like Yanswers

    - For user comments backgrounds
Random Yahoo! Messenger Invironments or a drop down box to give us option to chose which we want (blank must be an option too)

    - Why don’t welcome us if we already have a Yahoo! ID like in all Yahoo! network. And may be an option We can chose our Yahoo! ID or a nickname when comment.

    - Register for comment
so who wanna comment must sign up with Yahoo! = new Yahoo! users = better (ban) control on comments area =

awww iam getting >:) better i stop

Have a good weekend all ~~

  19. I too have had problems for months trying to access profiles. Although I am able to highlight a name from my friends list, then go into Contacts and down to View Profile. By doing this I can view a profile ONLY if they are already on my friends list. There used to be a place for us to type in a person’s id then get their profile. I’d like to see that come back.

  22. Hi mahmoud,

This new integration is not something you need to download. If you’re using the new version of Yahoo! Mail (http://mail.yahoo.com), eventually you will see this new feature appear in your account. It’s rolling out over a 3 month period so if you don’t get it in your Yahoo! Mail account right away, please be patient. Thanks,

  25. Hey,

Yahoo messenger in Yahoo mail is good. But I want Yahoo! mail inside Yahoo messenger. So that I just open the yahoo! messenger and just as Contacts thing opens up in the Yahoo! messenger, Mail thing should open up and I should be able to send and receive mail from Yahoo! messenger. So Yahoo! messenger should become just the program that you use and the need for browser goes away. Please work on this.

  26. Well, once again my posts to this blog have been deleted.

I can only assume that ANY negative post against Yahoo is deleted.

Every few days we see the phantom, “Sarah Bacon”, post a new topic explaining whats new in Yahoo Messenger. This would seem to indicate that there actually are people, somewhere in the world, that are pushing buttons for Yahoo on behalf of their Messenger service. So its not as though they aren’t aware of the problems that plague their chatrooms. Rather, it stands to reason that they CHOOSE to IGNORE them.

With all of Yahoo’s recources, does it make sense to anyone that in any given Yahoo Chatroom, a full 50% of of its “chatters” are automated pornagraphy robots?

Or that in many others you will find a handfull of malicious users (usually the same people) that interupt what WAS a decent chatroom with their own version of automated bot programs, that flood the chatroom with bogus screen names, just to prove they can?

If Yahoo experienced a glitch that prevented the profits from flowing in, wouldn’t it be safe to say that the problem would be addressed within just a few hours?

Yes, I think, that if it was their money in jeapardy, they would be on it like white on rice.. .

  41. How do you disable this feature? I do not want to be made available for chat or have chat windows pop up when I’m checking my email at work. If this can’t be done, I’ll switch back to the old version, as the beta/2.0 gets more and more annoying.

    Comment by Ben Sprague — June 13, 2007 #

  42. Hi Ben - To disable the chat in Yahoo! Mail, go up to the status menu next to your Yahoo! ID when you’re signed in and change it to “Disable chat”. This will keep you offline in IM when you’re in Mail. If you want to then get online, just access that menu in the future and change it to Available.

  43. Why doesn’t yahoo do something about flood of bots in every chatroom. I used to use yahoo chat but not anymore. It is almost impossible to have decent chat without getting tons of IM from these bots. And I do not get how they even create that many aliases. I actually see the same alias in more than one room at once………

    Comment by Robin — October 10, 2007 #

  47. Robin - Yahoo! Mail notifications in Messenger can be disabled under Preferences. When you’re in Messenger, click on the “Messenger” menu and choose “Preferences”. Then click on the ‘Alerts & Sounds’ item on the left hand side. You’ll see a menu come up where you can indicate which alerts you want to receive. Click on “I receive a message in Yahoo! Mail” and then uncheck all the “Alert me by:” boxes below to disable it. Be sure to click “Apply” to confirm the changes.
