Hi Mattie - Sorry to read that our customer care did not know about the ability to call toll-free numbers. Thanks for setting them straight. :)

That 800-899-9619 was set up for a movie promotion (The Messengers). The movie is long gone out of theaters so they probably disabled the phone line. Sorry about that!

Hey Sarah,

I was chatting with a YM CS staff earlier today because I called a 1-866 tollfree number with YM (I have both PhoneIn and PhoneOut accounts). I got a “the number you dialed cannot be reached from your calling area” message.

The YM CS staff I chatted with said that Yahoo Voice does not support tollfree numbers. Isn’t that interesting when you (Sarah) had written this January about calling tollfree numbers with YM?

I told the YM CS staff that that isn’t true because I’ve been calling various tollfree numbers before. I now realize that YM doesn’t work with all tollfree numbers.

To re-prove to myself and demonstrate to YM CS staff that YM is capable of calling tollfree numbers, I dialed 1-866-246-7262 and 1-888-723-8881. Both calls were successful (i.e., got connected to the company I’m calling).

I’m using Yahoo US version 8.1.0.401.

Out of curiosity, I dialed the two numbers you mentioned in your article:

1-800-899-9619 – Not successful. I got this message “This isn’t valid. Please check your listing and try your call again.”

1-800-555-8355 – Went through!

So, this further supports my observation that YM works with some tollfree numbers but not with others. I have a list of other tollfree numbers that doesn’t work with YM.

Could you, Sarah, explain why there are tollfree numbers that can be dialed from YM and other tollfree numbers that can’t?

Hi Brian,

When you're in IE7, there's a drop down menu arrow next to the magnifying glass that sits next to the search box in the upper right corner. Click on that menu and choose "Change Search Defaults...". I think changing settings in there will help clear up your problem.

How do I turn off the re-direct to yahoo search page in IE7? Each time I try to do an address bar search, I'm sent to a www9. site (yahoo results). I have tried to reset the default to google etc. but it only works in the search bar. I hate being hyjacked! any ideas?
